When the Gimbels department store chain closed in 1986, many of its selling floors were converted into luxury apartments, including those of this branch at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue. The retailer’s soaring ceilings allowed Axis Mundi to create bedroom mezzanine spaces overlooking the living and dining rooms. Defining them with translucent glass welcomed natural light while retaining privacy. Downstairs, spaces bleed one into another, their basic monochromatic black-and-white palette acting as a unifying leitmotif. Yet each space feels distinct, with its own programmatic purpose, a feat largely achieved by varying floor and wall treatments—a graphic tile pattern in the entry, a red wall in the hall leading to the master suite, a colorful area rug in the living room. In the retailer’s heyday, the then-common saying, “Would Macy’s tell Gimbels?” implied the strategies the competitors kept from each other to gain the upper hand. Here, a structure iconic in its day also conceals something: a handsome, wholly contemporary repurposing that represents just the sort of innovation that made Gimbels the celebrated name that it was.

The “L” shape layout works well, and a large center island provides functionality and entertaining space. The island is painted a soft gray that pops and complements the white perimeter cabinets. The upholstered stools are perfect for a quick bite and the under cabinets provide bonus storage for infrequently used items.

This small home for empty-nest owners of Showcase Renovation represents the epitome of collaboration between architect and builder. Compact single level living with a panoramic lake view was the catalyst for design. Primary living spaces align under a vaulted profile that draws light from above, while ceiling heights and floor levels vary to introduce drama and intimacy in just over 1300 square feet. The Terry O’Neil ‘Sinatra Boardwalk’ photo of Sinatra above the acrylic bar cart represents the glamour of the period and gives homage to his 100th Birthday celebration in this beach glam bedroom by Melanie Roy Design. Sinatra also collected Vladimir Kagan and Karl Springer, both designers represented in Melanie's bedroom suite design.

Mis-matched flooring was replaced with honed travertine marble and river stone in the entry. Honed black granite counter tops contrast the light bamboo cabinetry. Glass mosaic tile as back-splash accent picks up the colors in palette in a decorative pattern. Curvalinear swivel bar stools in micro-suede for the eat-in bar area.
