A 1927 colonial home in Shaker Heights, Ohio, received a breathtaking renovation that required extensive work, transforming it from a tucked away, utilitarian space, to an all-purpose gathering room, a role that most kitchens embrace in a home today. The scope of work changed over the course of the project, starting more minimalistically and then quickly becoming the main focus of the house's remodeling, resulting in a staircase being relocated and walls being torn down to create an inviting focal point to the home where family and friends could connect. The focus of the functionality was to allow for multiple prep areas with the inclusion of two islands and sinks, two eating areas (one for impromptu snacking and small meals of younger family members and friends on island no. two and a built-in bench seat for everyday meals in the immediate family). The kitchen was equipped with all Subzero and Wolf appliances, including a 48" range top with a 12" griddle, two double ovens, a 42" built-in side by side refrigerator and freezer, a microwave drawer on island no. one and a beverage center and icemaker in island no. two. The aesthetic feeling embraces the architectural feel of the home while adding a modern sensibility with the revamped layout and graphic elements that tie the color palette of whites, chocolate and charcoal. The cabinets were custom made and outfitted with beaded inset doors with a Shaker panel frame and finished in Benjamin Moore's OC-17 White Dove, a soft white that allowed for the kitchen to feel warm while still maintaining its brightness. Accents of walnut were added to create a sense of warmth, including a custom premium grade walnut countertop on island no. one from Brooks Custom and a TV cabinet with a doggie feeding station beneath. Bringing the cabinet line to the 8'6" ceiling height helps the room feel taller and bold light fixtures at the islands and eating area add detail to an otherwise simpler ceiling detail. The 1 1/4" countertops feature Calacatta Gold Marble with an ogee edge detail. Special touches on the interiors include secret storage panels, an appliance garage, breadbox, pull-out drawers behind the cabinet doors and all soft-close hinges and drawer glides. A kneading area was made as a part of island no. one for the homeowners' love of baking, complete with a stone top allowing for dough to stay cool. Baskets beneath store kitchen essentials that need air circulation. The room adjacent to the kitchen was converted to a hearth room (from a formal dining room) to extend the kitchen's living space and allow for a natural spillover for family and guests to spill into. Schroeder Design/Build created seven different layout options and our clients selected an “L” shaped design that required removing a bearing wall. This allowed us to open up the kitchen area and create a laundry area that was formerly an under stair closet. The new kitchen features loads of counter space for working and cabinets and drawers for storage. Appliances were placed to maximize flow and prevent traffic jams. A well-planned layered light plan offers overhead, task and accent lighting throughout. The peninsula seating area allows the kids to sit and do homework or socialize while mom’s preparing meals. This kitchen remodel includes many special touches that make it perfectly suited for this family. The knee wall under the peninsula is tiled to prevent damage to the cabinets from accidental kicking while the kids sit on stools. There’s a niche behind the sink to add extra counter depth for plants.

2012, My first kitchen renovation project working independently. Originally, this area had a wall that divided the kitchen from the dining room. Here the wall was removed to create an open floor plan. We added a peninsula (with niche) and the back door was replaced with a window which allowed for a continuous counter top and more natural light. Small spaces require special attention to maximize function. Custom made cabinetry allowed for a magic corner pull out next to the sink, a paneled dishwasher, spice drawers, a counter depth refrigerator, beverage center, cooktop with downdraft vent and undercounter oven (in peninsula). French doors were added to the dining room, and the client designed and built a beautiful outdoor patio. Patios made of concrete squares can be chic, but ther spaces between the squares can present problems like tipsy tables, wobbly chairs, and even twisted ankles and trip hazards. This couple wanted the low maintenance requirements of artificial turf and the modern look of concrete squares, but they also wanted a safe space for their young children. So instead of the river rocks that were formally in the patio joints which created uneven levels and trip hazards, they asked if we could remove some squares and install turf between the remaining ones. We used a special technique of installing 2 inch firm turf pads in the joints first and then gluing the turf strips to the pads. This makes the turf level with the concrete squares and will keep the narrow turf strips from lifting, as they would if we had used the conventional turf fasteners here.

This staircase is a “curved” staircase design and is an example of highly specialized woodwork. The challenge with this curved wall was to use something that would be flexible enough to build into the curve. We settled on doing “Judges Panels.” “Judges Panels” are created with a “stacked box” look from the floor (or from the steps in this case) to the ceiling. Panel molding was used to build the box frames because it’s flexible enough to make those curves. The calculations necessary to make the boxes or frames and to make the cuts is where a highly skilled craftsman is separated from a regular trim carpenter. The process required two full days just to mark up the wall to visually set up how it was to be laid out. Then another two full days were needed to cut each frame and nail it to the wall. Every cut was absolutely perfect. Once all the woodwork was completed, the panel wall was sprayed with white enamel to give it the look of a full wood wall. The end result was stunning.
