Refreshed & Refined
Sometimes the best transformations begin with good bones. In this project, we reimagined a dated 90's kitchen, dinette, and living space with a thoughtful refresh - proving that impactful change doesn’t always require a full renovation.
An awkwardly placed three-sided fireplace was removed and replaced with a custom built-in feature wall, creating a strong focal point for the open-concept space. The existing cabinetry was refaced, while additional cabinets and a new island were added to improve storage, flow, and everyday usability.
The entire space was updated in a warm neutral palette, accented with subtle green and blue tones the homeowners love. The result is a fresh, timeless space designed to be enjoyed for years to come.

The Azenco R-BLADE™ is a fully adjustable louvered roof system engineered for precision, beauty, and year-round comfort. Each motorized louver rotates silently to give you control over light, ventilation, and protection with the touch of a button. Open up to the sunshine. Close tightly during rain. Michael Carroll. In this elegant and simple kitchen renovation, the owner wanted to add extra lighting to two places in the kitchen that are normally too dark - the under cabinet area, and in each of the cabinets, and he wanted to do this without having to do extra drilling and having to create excessive large lighting fixtures. Here LED Strip Light in beautiful Warm White was used in both applications, which not only created bright linear lighting, but was easy to install with minimal installation work and the LED lighting lit the entire surface without creating odd shadows. In each of the pictures the finished renovation is shown and also pictures of the work in progress, showing how the simple barrel connectors, and slide and lock LED Strip Light connectors easily come together for easy connections that do not require soldering. All of the lighting for both the undercabinet areas and in the cabinets are controlled using the iTouch LED Dimmer, which comes with strong double sided sticky back tape which, as shown here, has been carefully tucked up and behind the lip of the cabinet, for easy on/off and dimming control without the unsightly and design-disturbing traditional light switch.

Transforming this long-standing home on Bradgate Rd required more than a simple update—it called for a careful balance between renewal, structure, and respect for what was already there.
The existing brick bungalow had strong bones, but the exterior was deteriorating, the carport was underutilized, and key interior spaces no longer supported the homeowners’ needs. Having lived in the home for decades, the goal wasn’t to start over—it was to rework the home into a more functional, comfortable space that could support the years ahead.
The scope included a full exterior masonry refresh, where the front layer of brick was removed and replaced while maintaining the integrity of the original structure. The carport was fully enclosed and integrated into the home as a garage, and a new roof tied everything together with consistent detailing and long-term performance in mind.
Inside, the layout was carefully reworked to introduce a new primary ensuite and completely renovate the main bathroom. Plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems were updated throughout, with a focus on accessibility, ease of use, and everyday comfort.
The result is a home that feels both familiar and elevated—where thoughtful construction and refined design come together to support long-term living without compromising character.

The owners of this multi-family housing project in Aptos felt strongly about creating both beautiful views and privacy for each home. We also really wanted to encourage people to spend time outside through the creation of shared community space. When I arrived, there was over 8,000 square feet of dead brown grass carpeting the complex. Now, a long, sinuous dry-creek runs the length of the property. The drycreek is surrounded by tough plants which require very minimal water and maintenance. We used enormous trees for privacy in key locations, along with a central community gathering area complete with a commercial grade built-in BBQ and bench seating. A large, strategically placed arbor provides shade for the dining area at the hottest time of the afternoon. New lighting illuminates pathways and trees and residents can enjoy the space at any time of day.

Decorative painting of trompe l'oiel "tiles" by James Whiteside on wall above kitchen sink. A simple window treatment with a manual easy lift mechanism is installed to protect the interior from the hottest part of the day. Window treatments were specified and installed throughout the entire home, including bedrooms, living room, dining room, and two sets of sliding glass doors. This home is located on the York sound and required a variety of window treatments to protect the interior furnishings and finishes from the strong sunlight. In addition to blinds, tinting film was applied to the windows on the water side of the home.

This thoughtfully designed home required multiple custom staircases, each blending farmhouse charm with contemporary elegance. Gleaming oak treads, substantial wooden newels, and floating white oak handrail systems create a look that's both traditional and refined. Each staircase seamlessly connects the home's strong farmhouse character with modern living spaces, proving that old-fashioned charm and contemporary design don't just coexist. They elevate each other.

This floating staircase was a different style from the usual Stairworks design. The owner wanted us to design, fabricate and install the steel and the treads, so our in-house staircase designer drew everything out. Because the owner has strong ties to China, he had everything sent away in order for the treads to be manufactured there. What made this tricky was that there wasn’t any extra material so we had to be very careful with our quantities when we were finishing the floating staircase build.
The treads have LED light strips underneath as well as a high polish, which give it a beautiful finish. The only challenge is that the darker wood and higher polish can sometimes show scratches more easily.
The stairs have a somewhat mid-century modern feel due to the square handrail and the Stairworks exclusive round spindle balustrade. This style of metal balustrade is one of our specialties as the fixing has been developed over the last year closely with our engineer allowing for there to be no fixings shown on the bottom of the tread while still achieving all engineering requirements.

An archetypal Vancouver garden distinct to the rain rich areas of coastal B.C. Large Cedars, enormous Rhododendrons and Camellias, whose blooms weave exotically through evergreen masses, create an ethereal quality in this garden. The client wanted to reveal this jewel like quality while eking out a little more people space.
The challenge was in retaining the existing trees and large broadleaf evergreens while significantly re-organizing the grades in a design concept that established a strong relationship between the house and garden.
A real lack of light was a challenge for growing. Green became a colour of many faces, amplified by contrasting textures and rays of sun through branches. A thoughtful eye and a smart pruning program is required for the ongoing maintenance of this garden. The reward is literally breathtaking - a magical place where the line between worlds is blurred.
