Tired of doing laundry in an unfinished rugged basement? The owners of this 1922 Seward Minneapolis home were as well! They contacted Castle to help them with their basement planning and build for a finished laundry space and new bathroom with shower. Changes were first made to improve the health of the home. Asbestos tile flooring/glue was abated and the following items were added: a sump pump and drain tile, spray foam insulation, a glass block window, and a Panasonic bathroom fan. After the designer and client walked through ideas to improve flow of the space, we decided to eliminate the existing 1/2 bath in the family room and build the new 3/4 bathroom within the existing laundry room. This allowed the family room to be enlarged. Plumbing fixtures in the bathroom include a Kohler, Memoirs® Stately 24″ pedestal bathroom sink, Kohler, Archer® sink faucet and showerhead in polished chrome, and a Kohler, Highline® Comfort Height® toilet with Class Five® flush technology. American Olean 1″ hex tile was installed in the shower’s floor, and subway tile on shower walls all the way up to the ceiling. A custom frameless glass shower enclosure finishes the sleek, open design. Highly wear-resistant Adura luxury vinyl tile flooring runs throughout the entire bathroom and laundry room areas. The full laundry room was finished to include new walls and ceilings. Beautiful shaker-style cabinetry with beadboard panels in white linen was chosen, along with glossy white cultured marble countertops from Central Marble, a Blanco, Precis 27″ single bowl granite composite sink in cafe brown, and a Kohler, Bellera® sink faucet. We also decided to save and restore some original pieces in the home, like their existing 5-panel doors; one of which was repurposed into a pocket door for the new bathroom. The homeowners completed the basement finish with new carpeting in the family room. The whole basement feels fresh, new, and has a great flow. Construction: All vanities are self-standing and come fully assembled (top cannot be disassembled). 100% solid wood and hardwood plywood construction. Built to furniture-grade construction standards. There is no MDF or particleboard used in the construction. The base is designed to sit flush against the wall. Adjustable levelers included on the legs. Finish: Rich, durable furniture grade finish with inside matching finish. The hardware finish is brushed nickel. Top: White carrara 1-inch stone marble top sealed at the factory to prevent staining and watermarks. The tops come pre-drilled for a standard 8-inch, 3-lavatory faucet setup (faucets and accessories not included). Matching 4.5” backsplash comes as a free gift included with purchase, but requires assembly once vanity is put in place (no side splash included). Unit can be used without backsplash if desired. Please note that marble is a natural stone with varying characteristics. No two tops will be exactly the same. The stone top in the picture will have some variation compared to the one you receive. Drawers: Drawers all solid wood construction with ¾”dovetails and full-extension, undermount soft closing glides. Inside of drawers have the same finish as vanity exterior. Doors: Concealed 6-way adjustable stainless steel soft-close hinge mechanism on all doors. Sink: Under mount square ceramic sink that measures 20” x 15”. Sink has standard opening of 1.75”. Sink comes pre-installed under the vanity top. Mirror: Matching mirrors offered with each size and finish of vanity.

Andreas and Naomi Kunert of Ancient Art of Stone created the stone artwork “Memories Surround Me.” This unique, fully functioning natural stone fireplace created in their studio on Vancouver Island was delivered to the clients’ new home 450 miles away in Spokane, Washington. The completed 22' tall commission was delivered in two pieces on Christmas Eve as an anniversary gift to the client’s wife. The clients requested Kunert to design an artwork which captured the essence of their 50 years together and that filled the required space within the design of the great room while not overwhelming it. They wished the piece to represent their passion for fly fishing, their love of the movement and patterns in the waters, and the stones experienced, both large and small. Kunert envisioned and proposed a scale drawing, suggesting the artwork rise from the “still waters” of polished basalt, with sandstone blocks on either side carved into shorelines, creating the desired secret caverns for their use. This cradles a lifetime of stories and adventures that rise into the all-encompassing Fibonacci sequence of life, a swirl of stones. A hybrid concrete substructure supported the tons of stone being secured to it and then moved. It was then enveloped in sandstone blocks which were carved, adding a granite mantle and glacial erratics, ascending into an astonishingly complex pattern of Sacred Geometry. Giving movement to the stone was intensely challenging, yet imperative in giving the piece a feeling of lightness and spiritual grace. The final challenge was to lift the piece by crane from the low bed onto the foundation within the initial framing of the house, which was set within an exclusive residential neighborhood in sub-zero temperatures. Ancient Art of Stone was intimately involved in every aspect of the project. They designed the artwork, sourced the stone, created the commission in their studio, and delivered and oversaw the final installation into the client’s home.

The custom shaker-style cabinetry is finished in a medium stain and topped with a durable and easy to maintain Corian solid surface countertop in an ‘Abalone’ color. One wall was designed with a ‘Slatwall’ by ProSlat. This creative wall system allows for endless variations of hooks and shelving to ensure the family’s coats, backpacks, and other items are stored up and out of the way but still within easy reach. The floor is finished with a Trento tile called ‘Seaside Cliffs’ and adds a rustic touch to the space. A side-by-side washer and dryer, Hazelton undermount sink and stainless steel ceiling fan finish out this amazing transformation.

Inspiration for a transitional dining room remodel in Portland

No corner of this house remained untouched in this massive home renovation. The previous primary bedroom was the ideal location for a main floor guest suite and required the fewest overall changes. Relocating the closet gave us the opportunity to move the ensuite bath into its place. To capitalize on the stunning view there, we placed the clawfoot slipper tub directly in front of the new window. The allotted space was only five and a half feet wide, so we had to be very intentional with the layout. By installing two windows on either side of the vanity mirror, the compact space feels noticeably larger and brighter. The full-height black wall tile adds striking drama and contrasts beautifully with the custom walnut vanity. The powder room, converted from the former hall bathroom, was the perfect spot to introduce bolder, more dramatic elements, offering a striking contrast to the soothing neutral tones throughout the rest of the house. The whimsical bird painting, gifted to the homeowner by a dear artist friend, inspired this space, particularly the wall color which was custom matched to the bird’s red crown. Black Marble Hexagon floor tiles offer a luxurious base for the gorgeous brass console sink. The vanity light, chosen for its pineapple shape symbolizing hospitality, was one of the first design selections, aptly reflecting the homeowner’s love for entertaining. Overall, it’s a fun and vibrant space!
