The elegant foliage palette harmonizes outdoor living at its finest. Cast concrete slabs set the rhythm for the space while succulents and trailing herbs sneak through the hardscape breaks. The sense of privacy and calm created by the vined walls is unparalleled, especially when juxtaposed with the uplifting color from the fields of flax surrounding this truly unique secret garden in the Sonoran Desert.

When these homeowners planned out their home, they personally considered every detail, including building vertically to make the most use of their real estate and to take advantage of the fantastic view by incorporating a roof top deck in the design. They wanted the deck to have an attractive finish, but one that would not require ongoing maintenance to keep it looking good. With a passion for modern architecture and art, the clients wanted their garden to reflect their aesthetic and honor the California lifestyle. To meet their needs, the firm crafted a series of family-friendly outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. To highlight the architecture, concrete provides a unifying thread to join spaces together and define structure—sometimes solid, in other places becoming eroded walls and gravel walkways. At the entry to this serene garden, a sculptural concrete bridge arches over a Koi pond and water feature. Quiet, meditative pathways lead to gathering spaces shaded by willow trees and guide guests by the pool to floating wood platforms with lounge seating. On a carpet of Ipe wood, open-air dining and entertaining at a custom designed laser-cut tile table is enjoyed under retractable steel shade structures. In the rear garden, the designer provided a place for the clients to socialize by an outdoor fireplace, swim in the pool, relax on floating platforms, and take in the views. A thin aluminum sheet, shaped into a minimalistic seat to be hung into a warm organically shaped teak frame, doesn’t sound like a perfect marriage. But ZIDIZ proves that it does look like one! When the stackable chairs are placed around the matching table, framed with either a smoothly curved Ceramic top, you will find the combination sublime. Materials: teak and white ceramic.

Anyone who has a deck or a swimming pool has used this old cliche when talking about their space: “Oh, we just live out here in the summertime!” So, we got to thinking...what if you really lived outside in the summertime? What would an outdoor house look like? What would it need to provide? Could you really “live out there”? Casa Cielo (“Sky House”) is a totally private, mostly roofless “house”, where the owners can really live in the warmer months. Open-air living room, dining room, and bedroom spaces were created. The clients wanted a modern, spa-like ambiance. Inspiration was provided by the client’s vacations to modernist hotspots Hix Island House in Vieques, Puerto Rico and Orbit In, Palm Springs, California. Design Criteria: - Create an “Outdoor House” around an existing pool. - Build sustainably. - Carefully consider wall designs to ensure total privacy. - “Bring the Indoors Outside” with clean, modern living spaces. Special Features: - Living room and Dining room with a gas fireplace - FSC Certified Tigerwood sundeck. - Outdoor bedroom and shower. - Poolhouse with a bathroom and kitchenette.
