Granite slab steps and a graceful hand-forged handrail negotiate a richly planted hillside. The challenge of this site was to design functional living spaces while resolving a series of problems. Two entry courts offer suitable welcomes to the home: a formal granite court that is approached from above as one descends down a once blind driveway, and a more utilitarian play court off the garage. The rear yard, once disconnected from the house, is terraced and suitable for entertaining. A granite stair descends from the terrace to a new expanded lower lawn. A custom fire pit sits off the upper terrace and provides a more intimate gathering space.

A young family with kids purchased their first home and contacted me with the task to design an upbeat and energetic space for them, which also will have all the functionality they needed. There were some restrains - a load-bearing beam ran across the space leaving very little wall space on the left available.
We've chosen European size appliances and creatively resolved the corner to allow the sink placement.
and added a ton of color and shine.

Our client had work, evening and athletic/casual shoes that couldn't fit in her closets. We introduced a tall enclosed cabinet in the foyer area to resolve this problem. Since the foyer area is small, we selected glass door fronts and cabinetry in a white finish so it would be visually weightless against the white walls. This highly functional addition houses 37 pairs of shoes and the placement reduces the possibility of future clutter.
Even better, she can showcase her lovely shoe collection. What fashionable woman doesn't like that?

Newly built properties are not without their problems and often take a while to resolve all the snagging which occasionally extends to resolving problems with newly laid tiled floors. At this new property in the village of Malvern, and overlooked by the Malvern hills, the builders had left the Terracotta tiled kitchen floor covered in grout smears (also known as Grout Haze) following installation. They had also neglected to seal the tiles, which was actually quite fortunate in this case as they would have sealed in the grout haze, making it more difficult to remove.
Naturally, the property owner wanted the problem to be resolved as soon as possible, and for me to make the tiles easy to keep clean in future, which can be achieved by sealing the tile.
Before starting work, I made sure to fully protect any exposed woodwork with a plastic sheet covering to protect them from potential damage. I then proceeded to give the floor a thorough clean, using Tile Doctor Remove and Go to clean the floor and eradicate some stains that had been left behind as a result of the building work.
Next, I paid special attention to the grout, where the very visible problem of grout haze had arisen. To neutralise these smears I used Tile Doctor Grout Clean Up, a concentrated phosphoric acid cleaner that can also remove alkaline mineral deposits and efflorescence. Grout Clean Up is only to be used on acid resistant stone, as sensitive stone can suffer from irreparable etching if it comes into contact with the product.
Once completely clean and free of grout smears the floor was thoroughly rinsed with water to remove any trace of product and then dried as much as possible with a wet vacuum, afterwards an air mover was installed to speed up the drying process.
Later that afternoon the floor was dry and I was able to apply a sealer. To do this I opted to use several coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go Extra, a topical, fully breathable sealer that works really well on Terracotta.
The sealer builds up a layer of protection on the surface of the tiles, protecting against ingrained dirt and stains. Seal and Go Extra also provides a high quality sheen finish which really did well to enhance the look of the Terracotta.
The property owner was exceptionally pleased with the results, and to have this problem dealt with quickly and efficiently, additionally the sealer will ensure the Kitchen floor is easy to keep clean in the future.

The owners requested that their home harmonize with the spirit of the surrounding Colorado mountain setting and enhance their outdoor recreational lifestyle - while reflecting their contemporary architectural tastes. The site was burdened with a myriad of strict design criteria enforced by the neighborhood covenants and architectural review board. Creating a distinct design challenge, the covenants included a narrow interpretation of a “mountain style” home which established predetermined roof pitches, glazing percentages and material palettes - at direct odds with the client‘s vision of a flat-roofed, glass, “contemporary” home.
Our solution finds inspiration and opportunities within the site covenant’s strict definitions. It promotes and celebrates the client’s outdoor lifestyle and resolves the definition of a contemporary “mountain style” home by reducing the architecture to its most basic vernacular forms and relying upon local materials.
The home utilizes a simple base, middle and top that echoes the surrounding mountains and vegetation. The massing takes its cues from the prevalent lodgepole pine trees that grow at the mountain’s high altitudes. These pine trees have a distinct growth pattern, highlighted by a single vertical trunk and a peaked, densely foliated growth zone above a sparse base. This growth pattern is referenced by placing the wood-clad body of the home at the second story above an open base composed of wood posts and glass. A simple peaked roof rests lightly atop the home - visually floating above a triangular glass transom. The home itself is neatly inserted amongst an existing grove of lodgepole pines and oriented to take advantage of panoramic views of the adjacent meadow and Continental Divide beyond.
The main functions of the house are arranged into public and private areas and this division is made apparent on the home’s exterior. Two large roof forms, clad in pre-patinated zinc, are separated by a sheltering central deck - which signals the main entry to the home. At this connection, the roof deck is opened to allow a cluster of aspen trees to grow – further reinforcing nature as an integral part of arrival.
Outdoor living spaces are provided on all levels of the house and are positioned to take advantage of sunrise and sunset moments. The distinction between interior and exterior space is blurred via the use of large expanses of glass. The dry stacked stone base and natural cedar cladding both reappear within the home’s interior spaces.
This home offers a unique solution to the client’s requests while satisfying the design requirements of the neighborhood covenants. The house provides a variety of indoor and outdoor living spaces that can be utilized in all seasons. Most importantly, the house takes its cues directly from its natural surroundings and local building traditions to become a prototype solution for the “modern mountain house”.

This backyard began with no aesthetic appeal, and also came with drainage issues. Their son has a passion for golf, so they wanted to incorporate that into their newly landscaped yard.
Our team worked on the re-level of the yard to resolve the issue with flooding during major rains, and are continually working on updating overall drainage systems, through interlocked natural stones and underground drainage gutters and piping.
Our next step will involve updating the natural grass in the back portion of the yard.

The texture of the flat coquina walls really comes out with the uplighting effect. This project had a couple of challenges including the front door and awning that required lights in the landscape bed instead of coming from directly below. The garage also presented a challenge but was resolved with deck lighting fixtures. Photo by John Rennie

We've created an interior that became the embodiment of the main principles of our studio: modernity, functionality, democracy and honesty. The use of natural colors and simple shapes made it possible to visually expand the space of a small apartment.

Historic properties require special skill and vision. With a nod to the period style of this home and modern updates, we created an extremely functional kitchen within a small footprint. The property was gutted top to bottom and structural issues resolved. Playing with natural textures, faux elements and neutral colors, the blend of old and new make this little kitchen a powerhouse!

In addition to the dry stream beds a 1/4" minus gravel path allows water to percolate into the ground.
Specimen trees (Korean Dogwood and Evergreen Magnolia) to provide shading and privacy. The path is lined with evergreen grasses (Everillo Sedge) and Fountain Grass. The beds are accentuated with shrubs (Heavenly Bamboo, Goldmound Spirea, Little Heath Pieris, and Oak Leaf Hydrangeas).

A backlit house number is set into a stone pier at the top of the driveway. The challenge of this site was to design functional living spaces while resolving a series of problems. These Liberty Hill homeowners had one very distinct issue with outdoor food prep. Facing due west, their grill space on the patio was subject to the hottest sunlight of the entire day. To resolve the issue, we added on a custom shade roof, built specifically for evening grilling! This angled metal roof will keep the elements at bay, so the grill master can attend to his or her duties in complete comfort.
