California Spanish Colonial motor court entry and gated driveway with sport court was designed in 2007. We pay meticulous attention to details during construction.
The main courtyard entry allows guests to be let off at the front door and the cars valeted for parties. The grass insets soften and warm the homes grand entrance. American Gas lamps adorn the columns and front entry. The paving is natural cobble banding with Santa Barbara stone curbing. The motor court pads and driveway are sand finished colored concrete. The grand staircase to the main front door is cut limestone paving.
Mature Olive trees frame the entrance and a two sided weeping wall water feature adds a focal point from inside the courtyard, as well as, from the street view. Two full grown California Live Oaks were craned in to frame each corner of the house.
The main driveway to the garages has double Custom Wood gates with a side pedestrian entrance, all connected to the security system and cameras. The safe gated driveway also doubles as a bike/trike area for the children and is adjacent to the half-court Sport Court and in-ground trampoline for family fun.

A paver inset defines the driveway and highlights the Arts & Crafts post light. The clients of this project desired a cohesive landscape where neighborhood children could gather and play and adults could also congregate for large parties. A pool and paved drive court provide multiple areas for play while a raised terrace allows for supervision as well as separation. Although the circulation was driven by the needs of the children, it does not impose on the adult spaces. The landscape provides enjoyment for the whole family in a safe and beautiful environment.

Our handcrafted steel structure was meticulously welded then galvanized and powder coated for a finish that will last for generations. This platform will allow safe, easy and enjoyable access to any swim spa. Topped off with a horizontal cable rail this mezzanine is both modern and attractive.

We redesigned the stairway, lengthening the run of each tread to 27”, to accommodate a walker safely. The treads are now two and a half times wider than a standard tread width. Risers are also shorter than average, and this combination still creates an ergonomic path for anyone to traverse.

A custom-made TV cabinet that was attractive, safe and secure is what this Weston client asked us to build. Opposite the TV is a pool and hot tub with a straight line view. We built a shelf for a place to store sundries and outlets/USB ports above it provide device charging.

Extending the Hours of Enjoyment in Your Yard
Landscape lighting accents the hardscape and landscape of this project while providing safe lighting for maneuvering the stairway at night, and extended enjoyment of the entire property.

When we took on this project, the property was completely overgrown and in need of a serious facelift. The owner loved original architecture of the home and the original brick work of house. The challenge was to make the landscape functional and safe while keeping the original charm in tact. These photos only show a glimpse of the work that took place over 8 months: construction of new retaining walls, pathways, driveways, entrance walk ways, stairs, landings, and the plants. Each hardscape element you see in the photos is newly constructed, 95 percent of the original brick was repurposed to lay patios, reconstruct walls, and new tiles and wood was incorporated. The restoration craft is to make the landscape appear timeless, in tact for 100 years.

The new homeowners at this property wanted to properly retain this backyard hillside. Converting an old failing small boulder wall and tree covered hillside into something that is turning into a work of art. We are helping plant and finish this project Spring 2021! A combination of a three large stone walls with supporting boulder walls and outcropping have tammed this hillside. Updated ‘safe’ steps have been installed to connect the new paver patio for back yard viewing and relaxing. The Mr. homeowner is a very talented Dahalia gardener and now has the new framework to allow his talent shine even more! I look forward to helping finish this project and visiting the space over the years too watch the space mature.

Over a span of two years we completed several projects at this Tokoma Park, Maryland property. We cleaned up the backyard, renovated an existing swale, and installed water loving plants. The following year, we replaced the old pea gravel driveway with a permeable paver driveway. While doing the driveway we encountered spongey clay that was saturated from a leaking water line. We had to install concrete piers down to virgin soil to bear the weight of the walkway. The driveway excavation had to take into account the root zones of large trees. To avoid the surface roots we used a minimal excavation design.
Our ultimate goal with this project was to ensure that the new walkways provided a safe and comfortable path for the homeowners and guest to get from their cars to porch whether parked along the street or in the driveway. To provide an extra layer of security, we added low-voltage lighting to accent trees and light the walkway, which were programmed to come on at dusk and turn off automatically at dawn.
The new plantings are native species including River Birch, Swamp Hibiscus, Blue Flag Iris, and Common Rush, that are adapted to growing in wet soils. The permeable paver driveway will reduce runoff by storing rain in gravel base while allowing it to be absorbed into the soil below. The paver surface eliminates the tracking of pea gravel into the house while allowing heels to walk on it without sinking in. The swale handles runoff from all the uphill properties and the gravel keeps it from becoming a soggy mess.
During seasonal months, snow and leaf removal are greatly eased by having a hard surface to shovel or rake. The permeable pavers used are Techo-Bloc Villagio in Shale Grey and we installed a granite Belgian block border. We replaced existing broken concrete walkway with new curving flagstone walkway and connected the front steps to the driveway and side steps. All projects were consulted with the City of Takoma Park’s Urban Forest Manager, and the Montgomery County Historical Preservation Commission.

This modern marvel measures 15’0” x 40’0”, and has a 7’0” x 7’0” inside the pool structure. Adjacent to the hot tub is a sunshelf measuring 180 square feet. The pool depth is 3’6” to 5’0” to 4’0”. Colored LED lighting is featured in both the pool and hot tub. The pool coping and decking is Valders Limestone. One long edge of the pool features a 40’0” infinity edge feature with ceramic tile throughout the upper, lower and face levels of the feature. The lower basin is equipped with colored LED lights to provide ambiance for the lower seating area. The pool, spa, and lower catch basin of the project are finished in Ceramaquartz. The remaining 3 sides of the pool feature a lautner edge perimeter overflow system completing the modern, pristine aesthetic. The acrylic pool safety fence is attached to the downside of the infinity edge system, and provides safe ingress and egress to the lower seating area. Tempest torch fire features adorn the opposite corners of the infinity edge.

This garden is a perfect example of contemporary city design for a small space. Two custom built hardwood planters provide some height and depth to the narrow front yard. While the tile walkway is set on a stable concrete base ensuring safe passage in and out of the home in both summer and winter. The private back yard maximizes space by using a custom built hardwood table as both an architectural piece that defines the fire pit area, and an optional servery for larger dining parties.
