Each designer chose a “Titan of Business” for this showcase house, and Michael Ostrow chose 1970s fashion designer Halston, who was the first designer to really take his name and turn it into a brand. The challenge for the project was taking a 1970s vibe and creating a fun but seamless mix between the old and new.
Key design elements in the room include the Philip-Jeffries green grass cloth wallpaper, sconces by Fuse Lighting and the Baughman-style bench and mirrored campaign chests, which were designed by Michael and available through the Grace Home Collection© at his showroom, Grace Home Furnishings. Many of the fabrics are from Zinc, a division of ROMO. Most of the accessories are vintage, including the pillows, which are constructed from 1970s scarves.

Surrounded by mountains, this open living room takes advantage of the views with large windows on two sides. A vaulted ceiling enhances the space and echoes the mountaintops outside. Casual California style dominates with linen upholstered furniture in warm neutrals, punctuated by graphic ottomans.

Betsy & Matt have a beautiful pool and patio, but an exposed location on a links golf course left nowhere to escape the afternoon sun and incessant wind. SCD was engaged to design and build an oasis of shade for lounging and entertaining as the focal point of this spectacular outdoor living space.
Design Criteria:
- Provide shelter from the sun and wind.
- Create a light and open area – avoid creating an enveloping “building”. More like a large umbrella than a small building.
- Design to harmonize with the client’s modern tastes, as expressed in the home’s interior.
- Create space for soft seating, bar seating and cooking, all within the “shade footprint” during the afternoon.
Special Features:
- Transitional/Modern design.
- Custom welded steel frame structure
- Roof framed with oversized Douglas Fir timbers.
- Custom fabricated sliding wind/sun screen panels. Laser-cut aluminum panels feature the work of local artist Chris Borai.
- Bar and outdoor kitchen area features granite tile countertops and stainless steel appliances.
- Technology features include Sunbrite outdoor televison, Apple TV & Sonos music systems.
- Sunbrella fabric canopies extend the shade over the bar and grill area.

- POLKA DOTS CUPBOARD. In designing Polka Dots, Toyo Ito placed multiple methacrylate, circular inserts in apparent disarray on the doors, in stark contrast to the strict and minimalist structures of this piece of furniture. This graphic idea is reminiscent of Tokyo's Za-Koenji theatre, also designed by the great architect. The inserts represent, as the name itself indicates, a multitude of dots that seem to fly gently upwards and that, upon turning the interior lights on, create a magical play of lights and shadows.

- TWIST COAT STAND. The eight beech slats in its structure bend and twist as if they were dancing. Their elastic tension is essential to provide the hanger with excellent form and stability. Twist responds to a simple yet important observation: hangers usually vanish when you hang your coats or clothing. However, Twist does not disappear. Conversely, it is emphasized as only its central part is covered. Clothing can be hung on hooks stuck in the slats allowing the upper part of Twist, a beautiful wood flower, to emerge in all its elegance.

- RIPPLES BENCH. Ripples, winner of the 2004 Compasso d'Oro, is made of a laminated composite of five different solid woods. Slide your hand along the surface to enjoy the seamless transitions between walnut, mahogany, cherry, oak, and ash. This enveloping seat, carved with mastery, is hand-finished to produce an elegant polychromatic effect arising from the ductility of the wood. A true icon of international design, Ripples is a bench suitable for home users, commercial environments, and public spaces.
