The architectural bones of this Kentfield family home were beautiful, so we honored that in our remodel of the residence. From this strong entryway to the open floor plan of the interiors, we utilized our construction experience and attention to architectural detail to create a stunning structure that would meet the family’s needs.

Our overall design concept for the renovation of this space was to optimize the functional space for a family of five and accentuate the existing window. In the renovation, we eliminated a huge centrally located kitchen island which acted as an obstacle to the feeling of the space and focused on creating an elegant and balanced plan promoting movement, simplicity and precisely executed details. We held strong to having the kitchen cabinets, wherever possible, float off the floor to give the subtle impression of lightness avoiding a bottom heavy look. The cabinets were painted a pale tinted green to reduce the empty effect of light flooding a white kitchen leaving a softness and complementing the gray tiles. To integrate the existing dining room with the kitchen, we simply added some classic dining chairs and a dynamic light fixture, juxtaposing the geometry of the boxy kitchen with organic curves and triangular lights to balance the clean design with an inviting warmth.

When this young couple bought their dream home, their dream kitchen seemed completely out of reach. A major kitchen face-lift makes an impression with a traditional aesthetic and touches of craftsman influence. Mixing slate and glass in the backsplash, polished and leathered finishes on the countertops and balancing the earthy elements with a sophisticated tradition creates a warm and inviting space.

Creating an elegant spa-like retreat suitable for a multi-million-dollar high-rise condo was the request of our client. Leaving the details to the design team, our client simply said she envisioned a bright white contemporary design with warm contrasts, a bathtub that is actually inviting, and the ability to look out at the waterfront view from the shower. Given the “triangle” shape of the bathroom, we decided to design the bathroom around straight lines to juxtapose the angles in a modern aesthetic. Sleek floating cabinetry with accent lighting and glossy white floors give this bathroom a relaxing light feel, as if you are floating in the clouds.

This cozy gathering space in the heart of Davis, CA takes cues from traditional millwork concepts done in a contemporary way. Accented with light taupe, the grid panel design on the walls adds dimension to the otherwise flat surfaces. A brighter white above celebrates the room’s high ceilings, offering a sense of expanded vertical space and deeper relaxation. Along the adjacent wall, bench seating wraps around to the front entry, where drawers provide shoe-storage by the front door. A built-in bookcase complements the overall design. A sectional with chaise hides a sleeper sofa. Multiple tables of different sizes and shapes support a variety of activities, whether catching up over coffee, playing a game of chess, or simply enjoying a good book by the fire. Custom drapery wraps around the room, and the curtains between the living room and dining room can be closed for privacy. Petite framed arm-chairs visually divide the living room from the dining room. In the dining room, a similar arch can be found to the one in the kitchen. A built-in buffet and china cabinet have been finished in a combination of walnut and anegre woods, enriching the space with earthly color. Inspired by the client’s artwork, vibrant hues of teal, emerald, and cobalt were selected for the accessories, uniting the entire gathering space.

Creating environments that encourage our families to spend more time outdoors is important in today’s hi-tech world. Designed for the 2014 Chicago Flower and Garden show, this display garden captures a playful sensibility well-suited for any family to enjoy. The clean, modern lines and carefully planned spaces of this 50’ by 50’ garden form an enticing setting to simply unplug. Working within a very limited area, the design organizes a bio pool with sundeck, a spillover water feature and lounge area, and a gravel dining terrace with a built-in fireplace and shade tree canopy. Unlike traditional pools, our bio pool utilizes aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria, and microbes, rather than harsh chemicals, to filter the water. Impurities and excess nutrients are drawn out of the water naturally, creating a much healthier swimming environment. A native plant palette is incorporated throughout the garden with shade trees, ornamentals, native forbs, and perennials in an emergent spring landscape. We hope this exciting design will encourage green inspiration for visitors, whether they have a tight city lot or a larger suburban property.

This Cabana bath got a full makeover and became the star of the show with its unique mix of color and materials. A combination of blue coin tiles and long planks of distressed wood-like tile create a seamless look with a pop of bright blue hues. Accents include: Custom cabinetry in Benjamin Moore Downpour Blue, Braided leather mirror, Satin gold accents. The result is simply stunning!
