Like many Minneapolis homes from the 1920s, the original kitchen footprint was simply too small to accommodate the needs of its current homeowners. An earlier addition added square footage, but was poorly constructed and was not well integrated into the original space. The new layout included a 24” deep cantilevered addition to the back of the house that increased the footprint and allowed the kitchen to be unified into one continuous room. With the added space and the newly created arched opening to the dining room, enough space was created to include a spacious island for prep-work and family meals. The project included fully custom cabinetry with inset doors, marbled Cambria countertops and a flashy blue BluStar range. Period appropriate lighting fixtures, cabinet hardware and classic subway tile further integrate this stunning kitchen into the surrounding home.

My client wanted bold colors and a room that fueled her children’s creativity. We transformed the old storage space underneath the staircase into a playhouse by simply adding a door and tiny windows. On one side of the staircase I added a blackboard and on the other side the wall was covered in a laminate wood flooring to add texture completing the look of the playhouse. A custom designed writing desk with seating to accommodate both children for their art and homework assignments. The entire area is designed for playing, imagining and creating. A rooftop gem. Simply put, creating depth and contrast against the wrought-iron and cement by layering with wood-like materials sets a mood ideal for any outdoor lover with minimal space!

Infusing this once, drab 80’s kitchen with light and color was one goal in this extensive remodel. By removing the wall separating the dining room from the kitchen, the space doubled in size and allowed natural light to flood it. Creating a design that filled the space yet remained very functional to the homeowner was extremely important. By implementing the two working triangles, one homeowner can be using the sink, cooktop and refrigerator while the other uses the secondary island for food prep as it has an additional sink. A large soffit housing HVAC runs through the middle of the townhome and seemed intrusive to the space at first. After embracing it in the design, it’s as if it were meant to be. Three aluminum framed cabinets hang below, one directly underneath the soffit to create an asymmetrical design. On a budget but still wanting a beautiful design, Crystal’s semi-custom line of cabinetry came into play. Simply White and Light Grey provide the perfect backdrop for natural maple, brushed gold hardware and accessories that infuse the space with color. Inside the cabinetry, the best storage solutions make for an extremely functional kitchen! What comes to mind when you envision the perfect multi-faceted living spaces? Is it an expansive amount of counter space at which to cook, work, or entertain freely? Abundant and practical cabinet organization to keep clutter at bay and the space looking beautiful? Or perhaps the answer is all of the above, along with a cosy spot to retreat after the long day is complete. The project we are sharing with you here has each of these elements in spades: spaces that combine beauty with function, promote comfort and relaxation, and make time at home enjoyable for this active family of three. Our main focus was to remodel the kitchen, where we hoped to create a functional layout for everyday use. Our clients also hoped to incorporate a home office right into the kitchen itself. However, the clients realized that renovation the kitchen alone wouldn’t create the full transformation they were looking for. Kitchens interact intimately with their adjacent spaces, especially family rooms, and we were determined to elevate their daily living experience from top to bottom. We redesigned the kitchen and living area to increase work surfaces and storage solutions, create comfortable and luxurious spaces to unwind, and update the overall aesthetic to fit their more modern, collected taste. Here’s how it turned out…

The word “Stoa” means “a classical portico or roofed colonnade”, that was often used for philosophical lectures in Ancient Greece. It was considered a place of learning, of quiet reflection, and of natural solace. Now with our Stoa Metal Roof Pavilion kit, you can create your own sacred space, or simply a functional one, that will withstand all weather, during all seasons. It’s built with sturdy, restored wood, and has a metal roof to ensure you stay dry for years.

Wow! What a “Great Room!” This phrase, taken in both its literal & literary meanings is one of the best ways to describe this amazing project. “Great room” def: a large room in a house that combines features of a living room with those of a dining room or family room. Check! We designed this project to extend the livable space of the house. With its wide A Frame porch, it allows for ample space to gather around the fireplace, relax in the mid-day heat or simply sit & marvel at the craftsmanship. We held nothing back on the detail, using reclaimed barn wood to create gorgeous beams, crown molding that wraps around the room, and custom curved detailing in the open gable. Reaching out to the side, we enter an intimate dining space featuring a built-in kitchen, a vinyl pergola & continued the stonework over, tying everything together! Lighting throughout the job was picked out by the homeowner & installed by our tech’s Plus, we built it with low maintenance products; Timbertech decking & Keylink aluminum railing – meaning, there is no sanding or staining!

Today, almost any activity you enjoy inside your home you can bring to the outside. Depending on your budget, your outdoor room can be simple, with a stamped concrete patio, a grill and a table for dining, or more elaborate with a fully functional outdoor kitchen complete with concrete countertops for preparing and serving food, a sink and a refrigerator. Taking a holistic approach to the space, we moved the doorway to the garage first and created a new entrance with a mini-mud room with shelving and catch-all space that helps contain clutter as people enter the home. With the doorway removed from the center of the kitchen, we were also able to create an expansive countertop run with the zinc hood and blue range centered in the space for an ideal work zone.
