CYAN Horticulture was commissioned to implement a low-maintenance planting plan and ensure regular maintenance of the grounds. This Northwood’s retreat was designed and built in a sustainable process to minimize site disturbance. The primary structural beams of the main cabin are hemlock that were logged on site and cut in Henry Ford’s original mill. Most of the house is paneled in indigenous northern white cedar with hemlock ceilings and cabinets of red and white pine. The sub-floors are also made of hemlock. The home is timber framed, doweled, and jointed. There is a high-efficiency propane generator and battery storage system that provides ample electric power. The home has been designed to take advantage of passive solar radiation and can be heated by the radiant bio fuel heating system. Walls and roof are super insulated and well vented to protect against moisture buildup. Natural ventilation is aided by the thermal chimney design that keeps the home cool and fresh throughout the summer. The property has been recorded a conservation easement written to forever preserve the singular beauty of the steep slopes, ponds, and ridge lines. It provides that the land may not be divided or the timber harvested in a commercial cut.

The clients called me on the recommendation from a neighbor of mine who had met them at a conference and learned of their need for an architect. They contacted me and after meeting to discuss their project they invited me to visit their site, not far from White Salmon in Washington State. Initially, the couple discussed building a ‘Weekend’ retreat on their 20± acres of land. Their site was in the foothills of a range of mountains that offered views of both Mt. Adams to the North and Mt. Hood to the South. They wanted to develop a place that was ‘cabin-like’ but with a degree of refinement to it and take advantage of the primary views to the north, south and west. They also wanted to have a strong connection to their immediate outdoors. Before long my clients came to the conclusion that they no longer perceived this as simply a weekend retreat but were now interested in making this their primary residence. With this new focus we concentrated on keeping the refined cabin approach but needed to add some additional functions and square feet to the original program. They wanted to downsize from their current 3,500± SF city residence to a more modest 2,000 – 2,500 SF space. They desired a singular open Living, Dining and Kitchen area but needed to have a separate room for their television and upright piano. They were empty nesters and wanted only two bedrooms and decided that they would have two ‘Master’ bedrooms, one on the lower floor and the other on the upper floor (they planned to build additional ‘Guest’ cabins to accommodate others in the near future). The original scheme for the weekend retreat was only one floor with the second bedroom tucked away on the north side of the house next to the breezeway opposite of the carport. Another consideration that we had to resolve was that the particular location that was deemed the best building site had diametrically opposed advantages and disadvantages. The views and primary solar orientations were also the source of the prevailing winds, out of the Southwest. The resolve was to provide a semi-circular low-profile earth berm on the south/southwest side of the structure to serve as a wind-foil directing the strongest breezes up and over the structure. Because our selected site was in a saddle of land that then sloped off to the south/southwest the combination of the earth berm and the sloping hill would effectively created a ‘nestled’ form allowing the winds rushing up the hillside to shoot over most of the house. This allowed me to keep the favorable orientation to both the views and sun without being completely compromised by the winds.

The view to the courtyard promises to be a singular experience. The pastoral color pallet and expansive windows pair well with the earth tone hand-scraped floor to create a modern yet classical all season luxury living space. Just north of Seattle, this family home is tucked away on a magical parcel of land within the Edmonds city limits. Designed to maximize the site’s breathtaking views, it is carefully sited to blend into its wooded setting while opening fully to expansive views. On our first visit, we found a secluded forest glade with stunning vistas of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains perched atop a high seaside bluff. Preserving and enhancing this singular landscape as the surrounding neighborhood fills in with development was central to our design. The approach is intentionally restrained—the home does not reveal itself entirely upon arrival. The house is composed of two wings that cradle the meadow, making it the most important “room.” Interior spaces are oriented towards the lush landscape and impressive views framed by mature trees. The structures are kept close to the perimeter, leaving the center of the site unbuilt. A covered bridge with a green roof acts as a front porch, linking the upslope garage/office with the main house. A gentle stair flows through the gap between the structures, drawing visitors into the clearing. The floorplan is highly efficient, carefully tuned to the family’s daily routines. Each room is exactly suited to its purpose, yet no larger than needed. An open corner with double-height windows creates a jewel-box dining room. Free of a corner structure, the home expands to encompass the covered patio for outdoor cooking and dining, plus easy access to the kitchen, encouraging year-round outdoor living. Human-scale moments are intentionally created, from a stairway window seat with peekaboo views to a covered outdoor extension of the great room that fosters a cozy relationship between interior and exterior. Much of the light-filled interior is wrapped in clear-finished fir, giving it a warm glow even on rainy winter days. White oak cabinets and black soapstone countertops add warmth to the kitchen. The built-in furniture in the library loft and the cold-rolled steel fireplace surround were crafted by the owner’s father, an expert woodworker, increasing the connection between the home and its occupants. The second story includes the primary suite with treehouse vibes. Located on a steep slope in a landslide-prone area, the Edmonds Overlook overcame numerous technical and engineering challenges to address vehicle and fire access, stormwater and erosion mitigation, and potential earth movement. White and grey kitchens are timeless designs for homes everywhere. This kitchen, while may be a grey themed kitchen, packs some punches in some design choices. First, they chose a wood countertop for their island to offset their marble countertop. But what we love the most (of course) is our Mod Mosaics tile throughout the kitchen. Mod Mosaics are a great way to continue ones theme of a single color (usually neutral) but then you have the open to throw in some color accents to bring out your spaces personality. This is exactly what these homeowners did--a singular grey color with several other colors interspersed throughout. The result? This is one drool worthy kitchen! A wet bar allows you to stay with your guests and keep the conversations going as you make drinks instead of having to run back and forth to the kitchen. While some homes have an open floor plan design that keeps the kitchen and entertaining area all in the same space, a wet bar is still helpful as a small bar area with a singular purpose during the main action of your gathering. Wet bars can be in a living room, recreation room, or even on the patio.

This project created a singular modern home for clients with two distinct professions; she is an artist; he is a musician. Their directive to Battle Associates was to “design the home of their dreams,” and “make it cool.” As the design evolved, three volumes emerged each with its own individual character. Shapes, materials, and colors reinforced the concept. The “Red Barn” houses a music studio, garage, guest, and children’s bedrooms. The “Industrial” volume is the Art Studio. The “Middle” volume is where the clients live. Each structure has its own set of exterior details, materials, and colors. The three buildings are oriented to maximize views around a man-made pond and a conserved hefty locus tree. Clean, contemporary lines set the tone for the details throughout the project, creating an appropriate environment for displaying artwork. Maple, bamboo, and painted finishes were the predominant palette, complemented with steel and glass for the stairs. Kitchen details favored cut-away pulls instead of hardware. The shell of the entire home was detailed and constructed with a high degree of energy efficiency in mind. Ultra-insulation was the standard with foam panels, triple glazing, and near passive house standards for construction.

Set on Camelback Country Club with sweeping views to the golf course and surrounding peaks—Camelback, Piestewa, and Mummy Mountain—this Paradise Valley estate was designed with one clear priority: make the view the main event. Every line of the pool and landscape plan was meticulously composed to pull your eye outward, enhance the architecture, and create an atmosphere that feels singular to this property. The backyard is anchored by a custom resort-style pool and spa composition that reads like a modern water courtyard—clean geometry, natural stone surfaces, and layered water movement. Bubblers and deck jets add sound and sparkle without interrupting sightlines, while a low-profile fire element and lawn panels soften the hardscape and keep the space feeling livable, not just a showpiece. Beyond the resort core, the property expands into an estate-scale recreation zone, including a full sport court framed in stone paving, structured planting beds, and evening lighting that keeps the grounds active after sunset. The perimeter is finished with privacy hedging and layered plantings—lush, controlled, and intentionally quiet—so the mountains and fairways remain the star. This home set a record-breaking sale, closing $1M higher than any home north of DoubleTree, and it sold in a single day. The developer, builder, and buyer all echoed the same thing: the pool and landscape sold the home, and then the record number followed. It’s the kind of project that proves what we believe: when outdoor living is designed at the highest level, it doesn’t just complement a home—it defines it.
