Inspiration for an eclectic home office remodel in Tampa

Small space living solutions are used throughout this contemporary 596 square foot tiny house. Adjustable height table in the entry area serves as both a coffee table for socializing and as a dining table for eating. Curved banquette is upholstered in outdoor fabric for durability and maximizes space with hidden storage underneath the seat. Kitchen island has a retractable countertop for additional seating while the living area conceals a work desk and media center behind sliding shoji screens. Calming tones of sand and deep ocean blue fill the tiny bedroom downstairs. Glowing bedside sconces utilize wall-mounting and swing arms to conserve bedside space and maximize flexibility.

I found a vintage farmhouse table that I refinished and use for our computer. Vintage surf prints and an old Pepsi crate add more rustic charm. Denise Biggins

ASID Design Excellence First Place Residential – Kitchen: Originally commissioned in 1977 by our clients, this residence was designed by renowned architect Donald Olsen whose life's work is thoroughly documented in the book Donald Olsen: Architect of Habitable Abstractions. Michael Merrill Design Studio was approached three years ago to do a comprehensive rethinking of the structure, spaces and the exterior envelope. Arts and crafts gray two-story gable roof photo in Houston

The transformation of this space from a single carport to a fully functional home office space for two was an amazing use of an previously under-utilized area. This homeowner was on a tight budget, so less expensive products that looked high end were employed wherever possible. Recessed panel oak cabinetry was stained a deep espresso color which helped keep the cost down, as well a using a modern Formica laminate countertop as the work surface. Bronze colored mosaic tiles were used to bring some light reflection and color into the workspace. This space won 2nd Place for Singular Residential Space during the 2010 ASID Arizona South Chapter Design Excellence Awards (Co-designed with James Curran of Curran Interiors) and was featured in Tucson Home Magazine - Spring 2010.
