Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects and Henry Calvert of Calvert Ventures Designed and built a new warm, modern, Eichler-inspired, open, indoor-outdoor home on a deeper-than-usual San Mateo Highlands property where an original Eichler house had burned to the ground. The owners wanted multi-generational living and larger spaces than the original home offered, but all parties agreed that the house should respect the neighborhood and blend in stylistically with the other Eichlers. At first the Klopf team considered re-using what little was left of the original home and expanding on it. But after discussions with the owner and builder, all parties agreed that the last few remaining elements of the house were not practical to re-use, so Klopf Architecture designed a new home that pushes the Eichler approach in new directions. One disadvantage of Eichler production homes is that the house designs were not optimized for each specific lot. A new custom home offered the team a chance to start over. In this case, a longer house that opens up sideways to the south fit the lot better than the original square-ish house that used to open to the rear (west). Accordingly, the Klopf team designed an L-shaped “bar” house with a large glass wall with large sliding glass doors that faces sideways instead of to the rear like a typical Eichler. This glass wall opens to a pool and landscaped yard designed by Arterra Landscape Architects. Driving by the house, one might assume at first glance it is an Eichler because of the horizontality, the overhanging flat roof eaves, the dark gray vertical siding, and orange solid panel front door, but the house is designed for the 21st Century and is not meant to be a “Likeler.” You won't see any posts and beams in this home. Instead, the ceiling decking is a western red cedar that covers over all the beams. Like Eichlers, this cedar runs continuously from inside to out, enhancing the indoor / outdoor feeling of the house, but unlike Eichlers it conceals a cavity for lighting, wiring, and insulation. Ceilings are higher, rooms are larger and more open, the master bathroom is light-filled and more generous, with a separate tub and shower and a separate toilet compartment, and there is plenty of storage. The garage even easily fits two of today's vehicles with room to spare. A massive 49-foot by 12-foot wall of glass and the continuity of materials from inside to outside enhance the inside-outside living concept, so the owners and their guests can flow freely from house to pool deck to BBQ to pool and back. During construction in the rough framing stage, Klopf thought the front of the house appeared too tall even though the house had looked right in the design renderings (probably because the house is uphill from the street). So Klopf Architecture paid the framer to change the roofline from how we had designed it to be lower along the front, allowing the home to blend in better with the neighborhood. One project goal was for people driving up the street to pass the home without immediately noticing there is an "imposter" on this lot, and making that change was essential to achieve that goal. This 2,606 square foot, 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom Eichler-inspired new house is located in San Mateo in the heart of the Silicon Valley. He tackled the situation by hiring interior designer Jennifer Corredor. Never defensive, he let her have run of the field. “He’d say, ‘Jen, do your thing,’” she says. And she did it well. The first order of the day was to get a lay of the land and a feel for what he wanted. For his primary residence, Tulloch chose a home in Pinecrest, Florida. — a great family neighborhood known for its schools and ample lot sizes. “His lot is huge,” Corredor says. “He could practice his game there if he wanted.” A laidback feeling permeates the suburban village, where mostly Mediterranean homes intermix with a few modern styles. With views toward the pool and a landscaped yard, Tulloch’s 10,000-square-foot home touches on both, a Mediterranean exterior with chic contemporary interiors. Step inside, where high ceilings and a sculptural stairway with oak treads and linear spindles immediately capture the eye. “Knowing he was more inclined toward an uncluttered look, and taking into consideration his age and lifestyle, I naturally took the path of choosing more modern furnishings,” the designer says. In the dining room, Tulloch specifically asked for a round table and Corredor found “Xilos Simplice” by Maxalto, a table that seats six to eight and has a Lazy Susan. And just past the stairway, two armless chairs from Calligaris and a semi-round sofa shape the living room. In keeping with Tulloch’s desire for a simple no-fuss lifestyle, leather is often used for upholstery. “He preferred wipe-able areas,” she says. “Nearly everything in the living room is clad in leather.” An architecturally striking, oak-coffered ceiling warms the family room, while Saturnia marble flooring grounds the space in cool comfort. “Since it’s just off the kitchen, this relaxed space provides the perfect place for family and friends to congregate — somewhere to hang out,” Corredor says. The deep-seated sofa wrapped in tan leather and Minotti armchairs in white join a pair of linen-clad ottomans for ample seating. With eight bedrooms in the home, there was “plenty of space to repurpose,” Corredor says. “Five are used for sleeping quarters, but the others have been converted into a billiard room, a home office and the memorabilia room.” On the first floor, the billiard room is set for fun and entertainment with doors that open to the pool area. The memorabilia room presented quite a challenge. Undaunted, Corredor delved into a seemingly never-ending collection of mementos to create a tribute to Tulloch’s career. “His team colors are blue and white, so we used those colors in this space,” she says. In a nod to Tulloch’s career on and off the field, his home office displays awards, recognition plaques and photos from his foundation. A Copenhagen desk, Herman Miller chair and leather-topped credenza further an aura of masculinity. All about relaxation, the master bedroom would not be complete without its own sitting area for viewing sports updates or late-night movies. Here, lounge chairs recline to create the perfect spot for Tulloch to put his feet up and watch TV. “He wanted it to be really comfortable,” Corredor says A total redo was required in the master bath, where the now 12-foot-long shower is a far cry from those in a locker room. “This bath is more like a launching pad to get you going in the morning,” Corredor says. “All in all, it’s a fun, warm and beautiful environment,” the designer says. “I wanted to create something unique, that would make my client proud and happy.” In Tulloch’s world, that’s a touchdown. Keeping the home's turn of the century roots, the main floor bath (originally the only bathroom in the house) increased in size by 50% by incorporating the small corridor that used to be immediately outside. As such, no square footage was taken from any other space, but the resulting 3/4 bath boasts a roomy subway tile and glass shower, which further enhances the sense of space. A second door in the bathroom connects to the guest bedroom and creates a private ensuite when house-guests drop in. Large scale wall paper, rather than make the space feel small, further enhances the spaciousness of the room. This gorgeous European Poggenpohl Kitchen is the culinary center of this new modern home for a young urban family. The homeowners had an extensive list of objectives for their new kitchen. It needed to accommodate formal and non-formal entertaining of guests and family, intentional storage for a variety of items with specific requirements, and use durable and easy to maintain products while achieving a sleek contemporary look that would be a stage and backdrop for their glorious artwork collection. Solution: A large central island acts as a gathering place within the great room space. The tall cabinetry items such as the ovens and refrigeration are grouped on the wall to keep the rest of the kitchen very light and open. Luxury Poggenpohl cabinetry and Caesarstone countertops were selected for their supreme durability and easy maintenance. Warm European oak flooring is contrasted by the gray textured Poggenpohl cabinetry flattered by full width linear Poggenphol hardware. The tall aluminum toe kick on the island is lit from underneath to give it a light and airy luxurious feeling. To further accent the illuminated toe, the surface to the left of the range top is fully suspended 18” above the finished floor. A large amount of steel and engineering work was needed to achieve the floating of the large Poggenpohl cabinet at the end of the peninsula. Inspiration for a transitional kitchen remodel in Birmingham

We converted a former walk-in closet into a laundry room. The original home was built in the early 1920s. The laundry room was outside in the detached 1920's dark and dank garage. The new space is about eight feet square. In the corner is an 80 gallon tank specifically designed to receive water heated via a roof-mounted solar panel. The tank has inputs for the loop to the solar panel, plus a cold water inlet and hot water outlet. It also has an inlet at the bottom for a circulating pump that quickly distributes hot water to the bathrooms and kitchen so we don't waste water waiting for hot water to arrive. We have the circulating pump on a timer so it runs in the morning, at midday and in the evening for about a half an hour each time. It has a manual on switch if we need to use hot water at other times. I built an 8" high wood platform so the front loading washer and dryer are at a comfortable height for loading and unloading while leaving the tops low enough to use for staging laundry. We installed a waterproofing system under the floor and a floor drain both for easy clean-up and in case a water line ever breaks. The granite is a very unusual color that we selected for our master bathroom (listed as a separate project). We had enough in the slab to do the bathroom and the laundry room counters and back-splashes. The end cabinet pulls out for easy access to detergent and dryer sheets.
