Bathroom - mid-sized transitional master brown tile and ceramic tile ceramic tile bathroom idea in Chicago with an undermount sink, raised-panel cabinets, white cabinets, quartzite countertops, a one-piece toilet and gray walls

Winner of the 2018 Tour of Homes Best Remodel, this whole house re-design of a 1963 Bennet & Johnson mid-century raised ranch home is a beautiful example of the magic we can weave through the application of more sustainable modern design principles to existing spaces.
We worked closely with our client on extensive updates to create a modernized MCM gem.
Extensive alterations include:
- a completely redesigned floor plan to promote a more intuitive flow throughout
- vaulted the ceilings over the great room to create an amazing entrance and feeling of inspired openness
- redesigned entry and driveway to be more inviting and welcoming as well as to experientially set the mid-century modern stage
- the removal of a visually disruptive load bearing central wall and chimney system that formerly partitioned the homes’ entry, dining, kitchen and living rooms from each other
- added clerestory windows above the new kitchen to accentuate the new vaulted ceiling line and create a greater visual continuation of indoor to outdoor space
- drastically increased the access to natural light by increasing window sizes and opening up the floor plan
- placed natural wood elements throughout to provide a calming palette and cohesive Pacific Northwest feel
- incorporated Universal Design principles to make the home Aging In Place ready with wide hallways and accessible spaces, including single-floor living if needed
- moved and completely redesigned the stairway to work for the home’s occupants and be a part of the cohesive design aesthetic
- mixed custom tile layouts with more traditional tiling to create fun and playful visual experiences
- custom designed and sourced MCM specific elements such as the entry screen, cabinetry and lighting
- development of the downstairs for potential future use by an assisted living caretaker
- energy efficiency upgrades seamlessly woven in with much improved insulation, ductless mini splits and solar gain

These secondary bathrooms were in need of an overhaul. The downstairs guest bath serves as the pool bath and also is used by seniors when they come to visit. We removed everything in this bath and started over. We opened up the space by removing the separating wall and created a large shower with low curb cast iron shower pan. We replaced the cabinets with shaker style cabinets from Waypoint. The upstairs Jack and Jill Baths were also remodeled. We replaced the cabinets, added wall sconces and replaced all of the tile. The walls in both baths were given a fresh, bright coat of gray paint to contrast the dark cabinets. White countertops and undermount sinks keep these bathrooms with the clean lines the owner was going for. Design by Hatfield Builders & Remodelers | Photography by Versatile Imaging

The design of this master bathroom was originally a split bathroom - the large space featured a corner tub and double vanity while the smaller space featured a shower and toilet. This client dreamed of utilizing the unused space where the corner tub was as bold & beautiful walk-in shower and we were thrilled to bring her vision to life. The space is now filled bold veined tiles and a more practical design featuring a water closet and additional storage with custom shelving.

This bathroom was originally a large one room bathroom. We split the bathroom by adding a wall and created two mirror image bathrooms. This is the shower in the larger of the two bathrooms.

Complete bathroom remodel Summer 2013. This bath offers generous space without going overboard in square footage. The homeowner chose to go with a large double vanity, a nice shower with custom features a shower seat. We decided to keep the existing tub and deck it with carrara marble. The vanity area shown in this photo has plenty of storage for bathroom appliances in the tower. Below the mirrored wall cabinets we added a open towel storage space below. The mirrors were cased out with the matching woodwork, crown detail and carrara tile mosaics on each side. The countertop is Carrara slab marble with undermount Marzi sinks. The Kallista faucets are wall mounted, we was chosen in chrome since it was an easier finish to maintain for years to come. The floor tile is a 20 x 20 Silver Strand with a Carrara Marble strip set in straight. The backsplash to the vanity is the companion carrara mosaic random. Vaulted ceilings add to the dramatic feel of this bath. The polished nickel Restoration glass globe chandelier also adds to the dramatic glamor of the bath. The shower has three zones function, with a polished gray porcelain tile, mixed with split face white marble and carrara marble mosaics. This luxury bath sets its residence in Houston Texas.

This new 6400 s.f. two-story split-level home lifts upward and orients toward unobstructed views of Windy Hill. The deep overhanging flat roof design with a stepped fascia preserves the classic modern lines of the building while incorporating a Zero-Net Energy photovoltaic panel system. From start to finish, the construction is uniformly energy efficient and follows California Build It Green guidelines. Many sustainable finish materials are used on both the interior and exterior, including recycled old growth cedar and pre-fabricated concrete panel siding.

Custom-built cabinetry provides extensive storage in this modern master bath. Forgoing a bathtub gave this homeowner the opportunity to install a large walk-in shower and his-and-her vanities.
