This kitchen renovation started when the ceiling light began to flicker on and off. Realizing the age of that light fixture brought the homeowners to wonder just how long the rest of their appliances would last. The kitchen was more than fifteen years old. Remodeling the kitchen was the opportunity they needed to create the space they desperately wanted. First on the list was an area to entertain and cook, second was that is be Kid friendly for their grandchildren, and third, they wanted the kitchen to open up to their adjacent living room. All new appliances, quality Fieldstone cabinets, and new hardwood flooring throughout the first floor brought this kitchen up to speed. They liked the idea of extending the counter to create a large seating area. This turned out to be the best loved feature of their new kitchen. Working with the designer and the granite company, they made a unique “tear drop” extension of the counter for seating. The old “breakfast” table moved out! Bright, airy and beautiful- the homeowners are thrilled.

Our client and her sister own a condo in Florida and although her sister lives there full-time, our client only comes to Florida for the winter and utilizes the guest room and a separate bathroom as her own. At the time, enthusiastic to be in Florida she went all out in decorating in the old Florida style with a green and yellow tropical feel including a plethora of palm trees (see before picture). All the furniture had to be from Tommy Bahama and even the light fixtures had a tropical theme. Fast forward to 2015 and our client was tired and bored in these surroundings and said to me, “what was I thinking!” She didn’t have the budget to change everything and I assured her that we could update her bedroom keeping the existing furniture. One of her previous decorating problems was the tiny window over the bed which she had covered by adding a faux canopy. Unfortunately, the fabric was thin and the window showed through. I tried to persuade her that a solution for the window issue could be a large painting over the bed but she wasn’t keen so we agreed to refresh the canopy with a more modern look. We started with fresh silvery-grey paint and glossy white trim. Using subtle greeny-blue bedding from Eastern Accents we extracted a simple palette and mixed in several patterns including a classic Greek key. There are geometrics in the pillows and a floral in the custom cornice and draperies and we found a fabric from the same color palette for the drapery behind the bed from Kravet. It has a beautiful sheen which reflects light and is heavily lined to cover the window. Our project manager added the wood trim to the cornice board. The modern chair is upholstered in a sea green herringbone while the table has an interesting story; my client loved the shape of the table but it was originally finished completely in gold leaf. Part of our update was to change everything metal such as door knobs and drapery hardware to chrome so our project manager offered to re-finish the table in silver leaf. Along the way we had a hiccup in the communication… she asked if the top was glass and was told it was but we didn’t realize that she hadn’t unpacked it so didn’t see the gold rim. On installation day we were surprised to see the gold rim against the silver legs! Happily, it was a really good error as the painting behind the chair has both gold and silver leaf and our error looks as though it were meant to be. We finished with turquoise blown glass lamps, several pieces of art, and a large floor mirror (not in photo). The client asked if she could choose some pretty accessories at local art fairs and one painting is by her artist brother-in-law. Erik Grammer Photography - I recently came across a post on Facebook with a photo of an elderly couple with a quote saying "We were born in a time when if something was broken we would fix it, not throw it away..." This quote resonated with me. I found myself thinking of it while working on the same house - for the fourth time. I affectionately call this beautiful Southern California beach house the Humpty Dumpty home. I started a wonderful business relationship with one of my favorite clients back in 2003. Initially, I was called in to "fix" and finish what another designer started. Once completed and with everything just so, the couple unfortunately divorced and amicably divided the art, rugs and furnishings. I was hired for a second time to recreate each room as close as possible to replace all items that were missing. The house was happily restored back to the original design and all was well for a few years. My client relocated to the East Coast for a temporary job assignment and the house was rented to a person (whose name I can't say) from a famous all-girl band. During this time there was a problem with the upstairs laundry room and water damage occurred. I was hired for the third time to help repair and update (ever so slightly) some areas in the house. My client requested to keep the design and feeling of the house intact because he loved it so much. A few years passed before a pipe broke in the master bathroom while the new renter was out of town on vacation. Unfortunately, things like this do happen - and if not attended to quickly, major damage can occur. In this case, nearly the entire house was flooded requiring it to be completely gutted and stripped down to the floorboards and studs. In January of this year, I was hired to help the client, the insurance company, and the contractor put the house back together again. But unlike the Humpty Dumpty story, this house has actually been put back together again - several times over. Although, this house and client have experienced some challenges, I say this is a perfect example of design success. My client has had many opportunities to change and create something new in his environment with every mis-adventure. Instead, he realizes his home is exactly the way he likes it. It has been such an honor to work with this man who is definitive, trusting, and confident enough to create (or re-create) the perfect home that "fits" his personality and lifestyle. Although this Humpty Dumpty home has been good for my business, I hope the next project with this client is to decorate another property - perhaps a New York City Apartment!

The house was in an ideal location but needed to be expanded. Design Builders & Remodeling almost doubled the square footage of the home. This British Colonial theme new residence sits atop the ridgeline on the west end of Sanibel Island overlooking the Gulf. Carefully manicured dune and beach access offer breathtaking views from the main and upper patios of the residence to the beach and the sunset. A lush, tropical entry runs the length of each side property line from the road, along each side of the house, to the CCCL line and provides a dense privacy barrier from the beach access path along the east property line. Tropical bamboo, white bird of paradise, traveler palms, dwarf leaf clusia and relocated native trees and shrubs make up the dense buffer. In the front of the residence a specimen multi-stem Sylvester Date Palm anchors the center drive island while stately royal palms, foxtail palms and multi-stem adonidia palms accent the foundation of the residence. Curved coconut palms march down the driveway to the street. That was the daily routine for Mary, one of our recent Baton Rouge clients, until she decided she had finally had enough. Little to No Closet Space: The Start of a Solution Mary and her family moved into their new home in 2020, and they quickly realized they had had little to no closet space. Knowing that she needed that space for herself, she was inspired and wanted to see if she could turn a 10x12 office in her home into a closet. Mary took charge and found us through an online search for closet installations, and she decided to give us a call. After speaking with our expert designer Felicity and sharing some photos she saw online, she decided to trust us with her closet installation. “We had an instant connection and relationship,” Mary said. “Felicity was so down-to-earth and personable that a relationship was built immediately.” Get the Ball Rolling: Designing and Constructing the Closet Mary thought that the process was beautiful and simple. Felicity provided a 3D interactive design of the project and based it on Mary’s needs. Mary said, “It felt like she was trying to accommodate my needs by using her knowledge of what I would need in my closet. It felt very natural.” Felicity had a contractor she worked with closely. Together, they handled the project in two days, even with the crown molding that needed to be removed for the projected closet cabinets to reach the ceiling. Once we finished, Mary was amazed at how quickly we finished the closet.
