Former clients of Penza Bailey Architects purchased this property in Greenspring Valley because of the expansive views of the adjacent rolling hills, which were protected by an environmental trust. They asked PBA to design an attached garage with a studio above, a new entrance vestibule and entry foyer, and a new sunroom in the rear of the property to take advantage of the commanding views. The entire house was extensively renovated, and landscape improvements included a new front courtyard and guest parking, replacing the original paved driveway. In addition to the 2 story garage enlargement, PBA designed a tall entrance providing a stronger sense of identity and welcome, along with a 1 1/2 story gallery, allowing light to graciously fill the interior space. This dining room is the epitome of layered decorating. A simple country style dining table paired with contemporary cream chairs, topped by a huge orb crystal chandelier, are front and centre. Dressing the windows in embroidered drapery panels over navy silk Roman shades adds a pleasingly symmetrical backdrop. The buffet between them was selected for its height, so that it has a stronger presence in the room despite its soft silvered tone. Its mirrored panels add a layer of pattern to the space. The lacquered navy artwork above the buffet is the "bull's eye" in the room, serving to marry all the navy elements. The geometry of the coffered ceiling panels overhead also serves to draw the eye into the space.

This gallery hall view shows the depth of the Coconut Grove remodel after the wall separation between the dining room and library/parlor was opened to create a stronger connection through the home. What had once felt more divided became a more fluid transition from the foyer into the main hall, dining room, and dramatic living spaces beyond. Exclusively To Design used the hall as more than a passageway. The corridor became part of the home’s visual story, introducing the clients’ collected artwork while guiding the eye toward the darker, more intimate library and dining areas. The result is a remodel detail that shows how architecture, circulation, art, and personal style were connected throughout the residence.
