A large south-facing suburban front lawn was converted into an edible garden that doubles as a dynamic and functional threshold to the front entryway of the home. The client, a young family with 2 small children, needed the space to remain relatively low maintenance and act as a teaching tool for the kids. The stone and timber raised beds and simple pathways help contain the gardening spaces and maintain clear lines to move through the site, whether it be to the front door, the driveway, or another part of the garden. Layered around the clean, simple lines of the terraced garden are more organic spaces that are planted with perennial beneficial and edible flowers and along the fence line is a single sweep of lavender. The Watts of Power Teaching Village will be the first development of its kind. Offering affordable housing options for black, male teachers in the Los Angeles area in conjunction with teacher training. This design is a 5-unit prototype which will scale to larger developments to serve communities in need. A major aspect of the design is communal space to encourage interaction among the young teachers in residence. You'll find a cozy living area, a full size shared kitchen, and large dining space for teachers to gather together to enjoy meals. In the backyard you will find multiple areas to lounge and eat, as well as a half basketball court as a multi-use space for sports and/or fitness. We've created a fun, modern exterior with lots of windows and doors which open to shared communal spaces. Inside each unit, you will find a small kitchenette, sitting area, and bedroom. Toys can really begin to take over the house - so figuring out an organization system will not only make you happy but it's a great way to teach those tykes the importance of organization. An adjustable elf shelving system from The Container Store is perfect as your toy collection grows. We used elfa ventilated shelving here and left shelf space for finished projects.

Chicago home remodel with childrens playroom. The original lower level had all the amenities an adult family would want but lacked a space for young children. A large playroom was created below the sun room and outdoor terrace. The lower level provides ample play space for both the kids and adults. All cabinetry was crafted in-house at our cabinet shop. Color-code using containers with lids that coordinate with the pieces inside. We love these clear Rectangular Canisters from The Container Store that easily stack.

A well-designed entry should set the intention for the entire home. It should be a combination of beauty and function and be representative of the people that occupy the residence. In this foyer, the Buddha's Dharmachakra Mudra gesture can be taken as a symbolic representation of Buddha teaching about dharma. This is the essence of my client.
