Sustainable Design Meets Smart Technology This home featured a request from the client to use as many environmentally friendly materials and fabrics as possible. Many common shade manufacturers use materials with PVC plastic, which is known for off-gassing hazardous chemicals that linger in the air in the home for years. The main floor roller shades met the client’s request for an eco-friendly fabric by utilizing motorized shades with GreenScreen fabric. In other rooms, the designer and client wanted the classic look and soft fabrics with roman shades and drapery tracks on several windows in the house. By partnering with the interior designer and fabric workroom, we were able to provide a custom solution for motorization of roman shades and drapery. Lighting Control The client is able control all of the lighting and window treatments in the house with a single control system. This eliminates the need for extra devices on the wall or remote controls that clutter up the space and get lost. By utilizing the custom window treatments, the house is able to conserve energy by keeping the house warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer by providing insulation and blocking sunlight. The lighting control system further helps to conserve energy by beautifully dimming LED lights as well as using quick buttons that turn off all of the lights in the house, or un-occupied rooms, with the press of a single button. Motorized Window Treatments Motorized window treatments add a high level of convenience to any project, especially those with many windows in hard to reach places. The challenge with many manufacturers is a limitation of style and fabric selection, some may be a s basic as only roller shades. Often times these come with un-reliable, wireless controls. On this Birmingham, MI project completed in March 2019, we partnered with the interior designer and drapery workroom to provide a truly unique solution. The homeowner and designer’s requests included many different styles of window treatments including rollers shades, roman shades and motorized draperies. Typically, this would result in a collection of various shade manufacturers with unsightly remotes scattered across each room or stuck to the wall for control. Utilizing standard offerings, coupled with an incredible team effort by the designer and drapery workroom, we provided all of the requested styles of window treatments, and were able to control them all on a single system. This means that each room has a single, elegant keypad built into the wall that controls not only the window treatments, but the lighting as well. When leaving/entering the home, all of the window coverings can be raised or lowered with a single button press. Shades and draperies can also be set to operate based on the time of day for automatic day-to-day operation using sunlight as a guide. In the end, we achieved convenience, function and sophisticated style.

The kitchen island and bar area both features the same doorstyle with a combination of two different finishes, Riverbed and Shortbread. My favorite element is the slatted accent on the island, which the installers executed perfectly. This renovation was a big project, starting with a blank slate, which can be overwhelming with so many options. But it was incredibly rewarding to work with these clients who had such a creative vision. We really worked together to create a space that met their needs while showcasing their style. This kitchen, created as a new renovation, was added onto the home as a true team effort. Tom Fox, the architect, brilliantly coordinated the space to seamlessly blend with the adjoining family room. The major element in uniting them was the ceiling treatment, coffers with individual planks - not headboard. The circular chandelier was selected to represent infinity of the family circle. Our trademarked Satina™ wood was used to achieve a clean, contemporary design for architect Michael Morrow of Kinneymorrow Architecture in this stunning Alys Beach home. The 3” horizontal spacing that is the home’s primary exterior design element continued through all gates, screens, rail sections and panels. The Galvas Construction team did an incredible job executing this unique design and our project manager, Michael Higdon, AIA, served as the perfect conduit and facilitator for Michael Morrow’s architectural vision and John Galvas’s construction craftsmen. Definitely an impressive team effort!

So work began on a new addition with a “great room” and a master bedroom with a master bathroom. That's how it started. But the project didn't go according to plan. Why? Because Amos was constantly asking, “What would make you 100% satisfied.” And he meant it. For example, when Mrs. Nelson realized how much she liked the character of the existing brick chimney, she didn't want to see it get covered up. So plans changed mid-stride. But we also realized that the brick wouldn't fit with the plan for a stone fireplace in the new family room. So plans changed there as well, and brick was ordered to match the chimney. It was truly a team effort that produced a beautiful addition that is exactly what the Nelson's wanted... or as Mrs. Nelson said, “...even better, more beautiful than we envisioned.” For Christmas, the Nelson's were able to have the entire family over with plenty of room for everyone. Just what they wanted. The outside of the addition features GAF architectural shingles in Pewter, Certainteed Mainstreet D4 Shiplap in light maple, and color-matching bricks. Inside the great room features the Armstrong Prime Harvest Oak engineered hardwood in a natural finish, Masonite 6-panel pocket doors, a custom sliding pine barn door, and Simonton 5500 series windows. The master bathroom cabinetry was made to match the bedroom furniture set, with a cultured marble countertop from Countertec, and tile flooring.

This was a team effort between the client and myself, to bring her dream kitchen to gorgeous fruition. The custom paint color she choose is a grayed out blue-green called Benjamin Moore Puritan Gray which changes color depending on the time of day. And the centerpiece was her Lacanche range from France. Don't fall in love with her white carrera marble countertops, I will make you sign a waiver. LOL

This Split Level home from the 1960s got a bit of a facelift in a reconfigured kitchen and adjoining living space. Once a dark and tiny kitchen hidden away behind a wall with a postage stamp dining area that spilled into the living room. Taking down the wall and adding a doorway on the load-bearing wall opened up the space and let light in without adding cost. Another great team effort with the husband acting as the contractor and the wife buddying up with me on design decisions, we were able to keep the costs down and spend a little more on the beautiful Quartzite countertops. They can easily fit 6 at the counter and still have room to cook to their hearts content! The adjoining living space has a good start with a quality sofa, carpet, comfy chair, console and drapery. New windows are soon to come along with roman shades and some side tables. But for now, this feels good.

Team Effort Pulling off this kitchen required a real team effort between Andrea, IKD’s design team and Ricabi. “We had a design that we had sketched, but were looking for ideas to increase the functionality of our limited kitchen space. Ricabi suggested IKD for the design. The sample design from IKD that Ricabi showed us had everything that we wanted in a design with 3-D renderings, layouts and measurements. It helped us so much to have a [kitchen design] plan,” she says. Bryan adds: “Collaborating with Paulina and IKD brought those graph paper-drawn ideas to life with a three-dimensional rendering of the kitchen in the final design.” With a plan in place, Andrea and her family were able to put the IKEA cabinets together on their own.

The kitchen was not photo ready, but I love to see the spaces I design lived in! The focal point is the custom copper hood, but the double sinks are an amazing feature as well. Both adults in the home love to cook, and clean up is a team effort. The double sink makes these chores more functional.

With that in mind, Amanda says her IKEA kitchen was a team effort between herself, IKD and her general contractor. This was crucial because she wanted to push the refrigerator into a nook so it wasn’t sticking out and taking up so much floor space. “The remodel also added in shelves; maximized cabinet space; and added a dishwasher, which I’m so excited about,” she says. “We intended this kitchen to be for everyday cooking and designed it to be a comfortable space that will make the small, everyday rituals like making coffee and doing dishes a lot more pleasurable.” To that end, she says her favorite part about the kitchen is a salvaged wood beam that her contractor found which was actually salvaged from a local wooden bridge that was being retired. “We needed to keep a beam in place there for structural support, and we decided to go with an exposed beam. I fell in love with this house because of its character and odd little quirks. [The beam] felt like a great way to upgrade the kitchen and keep a lot of the character that makes it feel like home.”
