You can see this juxtaposition pulled off perfectly in this outdoor kitchen by Outdoor Homescapes of Houston. “A smart patio kitchen plan requires not only a balance of the new and old,” says Outdoor Homescapes owner Wayne Franks, “but a blending of new elements – like an outdoor kitchen – with the existing home and outdoor living features like a pool, hardscaping or landscaping.” In this case, explains Franks, the existing 25-by-15-foot pool had a craggy edge of moss rock boulders, plus a spa and firepit faced with a rough Scabos splitface travertine. “The overall look was rustic and naturalistic,” says Franks, “so we of course wanted the new outdoor kitchen island to match.” Hence the 14-foot-long outdoor kitchen island with a raised bar, also faced in the Scabos splitface travertine and topped with a Normandy granite countertop. The hardscaping around it is Kool Deck® textured concrete. “People used to shy away from busy textures in outside patio kitchen plans, but now they’re embracing them,” notes Franks. “They’re increasingly attracted to the beautiful imperfections and irregularities of nature – there’s more of an authenticity and character to it.” Now, for the high-tech part: A Memphis wood grill. Memphis Wood Fire pellet grills are becoming increasingly popular for their ability to infuse amazing, rich flavor and for their versatility (they can grill, bake, smoke, slow cook, braise and barbecue). This premier model, the Memphis Pro 304, features 562 square inches of cooking space and a three-in-one cooking system (high-temperature grill, low-and-low smoker and true-convection-oven roasting and baking). It also has an intuitive Intelligent Temperature Control (see the display panel to the left of the grill) that can be set for cooking and internal temperature. A programmable food probe tells you when the internal temperature is reached and drops the grill down to a programmed lower temperature to keep the food warm till serving. The dual-fan convection system, with reliable metal blades, circulates heat evenly for tender, juicy results. Double-walled and sealed construction of 304 stainless steel allows for optimum heat retention and consistent temperatures in all weather conditions. A direct-flame “flavorizer” insert delivers the added flavor of a seared finish. This master bath remodel is a major lifestyle enhancement for a disabled client. The newly constructed shower was created with numerous Universal Design and Aging in Place features for all three people who use the shower, the client, her husband and the caregiver. Small slip-resistant tiles were selected for the floor and the bench gives the option to sit or stand, to help prevent back strain. The floating bench is also designed for the husband, for present and future use as he grows older. Non-institutional looking decorative grab bars and shampoo niches are strategically placed at sitting and standing heights for easy reach. A beautiful bay window ledge holds shower supplies and decorative accessories. The spacious roll-in shower allows the woman to enter on her scooter. Her caregiver can safely transfer her to the shower chair, remove the original scooter from the wet area, and then have the necessary room to maneuver all around the client for comfortable and safe bathing. A stationary shower head was included, as well as a handheld shower head on a slide bar with it’s own temperature control. The main shower head control is positioned at the front entrance to warm up the water before entering, preventing cold water shock. A heat / vent / light was also added to aid in air quality control. Brunswick Parlour transforms a Victorian cottage into a hard-working, personalised home for a family of four. Our clients loved the character of their Brunswick terrace home, but not its inefficient floor plan and poor year-round thermal control. They didn't need more space, they just needed their space to work harder. The front bedrooms remain largely untouched, retaining their Victorian features and only introducing new cabinetry. Meanwhile, the main bedroom’s previously pokey en suite and wardrobe have been expanded, adorned with custom cabinetry and illuminated via a generous skylight. At the rear of the house, we reimagined the floor plan to establish shared spaces suited to the family’s lifestyle. Flanked by the dining and living rooms, the kitchen has been reoriented into a more efficient layout and features custom cabinetry that uses every available inch. In the dining room, the Swiss Army Knife of utility cabinets unfolds to reveal a laundry, more custom cabinetry, and a craft station with a retractable desk. Beautiful materiality throughout infuses the home with warmth and personality, featuring Blackbutt timber flooring and cabinetry, and selective pops of green and pink tones. The house now works hard in a thermal sense too. Insulation and glazing were updated to best practice standard, and we’ve introduced several temperature control tools. Hydronic heating installed throughout the house is complemented by an evaporative cooling system and operable skylight. The result is a lush, tactile home that increases the effectiveness of every existing inch to enhance daily life for our clients, proving that good design doesn’t need to add space to add value.

We had a lot of fun putting this home into the Savant whole home automation system. Here we have speakers we installed, which--alongside the lighting and temperature--are all controlled through Savant.

A Kirkwood, MO couple needed to remodel their condo bathroom to be easily accessible for the husband in his power chair. The original bathroom had become an obstacle course and they needed a streamlined, efficient space. The new design moves all plumbing fixtures to one wall, which creates a large, open space to maneuver in. A wall-mounted sink works nicely whether standing or sitting. A standard toilet is outfitted with a bidet seat with remote control operation. The barrier-free, walk-in shower has two impressive accessibility features. The shower faucet panel incorporates a hand held shower, a rainfall head and 8 adjustable nozzles in one convenient, temperature-controlled package. In the opposite corner is a full body dryer with manual or timer control. Add two kinds of durable and easy to clean floor tile (the blue shower tile also appears on the sink backsplash!), serene grey onyx shower surround and wall paint, and they have a bathroom that makes a beautiful and productive difference in their lives. This project is the third collaboration between the client and DEANE. They wanted their kitchen renovation to feel updated, fresh and modern, while also customized to their tastes. Frameless white cabinetry with modern, narrow-framed doors and satin nickel hardware contrasts cleanly against the opposing rift-oak wood cabinetry. The counters are a combination of polished white glass with Caesarstone countertops in Airy Concrete quartz providing durable, functional workspaces. The single-slab, White Calacatta Sapien Stone porcelain backsplash provides a dramatic backdrop for the floating shelves with integrated lighting. The owners selected a dual-fuel, 6 burner Wolf 48" range with griddle, and decided to panel the SubZero refrigerator and freezer columns that flank the message center/charging station. The custom, boxed hood adds bold lines, while the full Waterstone faucet suite is a memorable feature. It was important to create areas for entertaining, so the pantry features functional, dark navy lower cabinetry for storage with a counter for secondary appliances. The dining area was elevated by the custom furniture piece with sliding doors and wood-framed glass shelves, allowing the display of decorative pieces, as well as buffet serving. Buckeye Basements with Team Member Columbus Custom Cabinets Delaware, Ohio The clients requested not only a remodeled basement featuring a guest bedroom and bathroom but, more importantly, a superb, temperature-controlled wine cellar to safely store 900 bottles. Every detail was meticulously planned, as maintaining a consistent temperature was essential for proper wine aging. The instrumental cooling system played a crucial role in the project’s design, ensuring optimal storage conditions. Each element was carefully considered to protect the integrity of the clients’ prized wine collection. Ultimately, the result was a spectacular space that not only preserves the collection but also serves as a celebration of fine wine.
