Mixing a three-dimensional tile with a subway tile creates a unique pattern on a focal wall that has space to display the owner's vintage glassware collection. A quartz countertop cantilevers over the edge of the wood laminate base cabinet to create visual styling. White laminate cupboards blend in with the white tile walls and backsplash. Under-cabinet LED lighting provides ample task lighting. The wall between the kitchen and the living/dining room was removed, creating the open concept space owners look for today.

The Cyclopian, out-of-scale window above the front door was replaced with two smaller windows that work proportionally better with the house. The curved steps gave way to new rectangular ones, and to add three-dimensionality, the entire entry way was extruded from the wall to form a small front porch, protecting users from the elements, as well as adding visual depth. Andy once said, “I never met an animal I didn’t like,” and he certainly favored dogs, owning several in his lifetime. While Warhol rendered his own pups, on canvas and film, it was his portrayal of Yves Saint Laurent’s French Bulldog Moujik we fell in love with and had to interpret in wallpaper. Warhol’s 1986 multi-color screenprint Moujik is engaging, endearing and demonstrates his signature layered off register and outlined technique to achieve a lively, three-dimensional look. For extra personality we included his shadow effect in the colorways Domino and Teddy, sprinkled in some sparkly iridescent ink for Goldie, and utilized a poppin’ silver Mylar background for Bluebelle. And, of course, we worked the pattern into a fun atypical repeat to make the design best in show!

Mark Rosenhaus, CKD. The cabinet sizes are based on Fibonacci Numbers to create a composition similar to a three dimensional Mondrian. The inspiration comes from the space itself. Various beams, heat pipe and gas meter dictate the sizes of the cabinets. Pleasing squares, Golden Rectangles, negative space and horizontal lift up doors whirl around the 10’ high space in a spiral pattern similar to the Nautilus seashell. The ribbed sliding glass doors allow access to the cabinet without open doors in your face and also give direction. The husband liked modern and the wife wanted Shaker, but rescinded in order to have the curve and circle she also loved. The shapes are a metaphor for steam and bubbles rising over the stove.

Living room - coastal living room idea in Houston

The kitchen renovation was tailored to the family’s wish list, including a beverage bar and built-in pantry. The modern, three-dimensional white tile back splash keeps everything bright and interesting.

We brought in rounded edges to break up the dominance of the squared details in this living room. Curved sofas sit mirroring each other, creating an inviting conversation space with a deep blue fabric that grounds the area without competing with the rich green valley views. The cocktail table features graceful curves with a cerused linen finish. We added a three-dimensional metal art feature of cascading silver leaves to the fireplace, reminding the client of the chilly elements they have temporarily left behind as they enjoy their retreat. A plush tone-on-tone beige area rug adds a soft texture, while pops of burnt orange accent pillows keep your focus within the space.

The addition opens the existing house and connects to Sarasota Bay with 12’ wide stairs carved out from the plinth. The addition adds a mezzanine level, an interior stair, and a dining wing as well as a generous shaded porch on the bay side. A glass bridge extends through the width of the house from the existing entry foyer to transparent metal balcony on the bay side, pulling the inhabitant toward the shaded porch and the bay. The glass bridge is supported by an exposed steel structure. Sixteen feet of sliding doors pocket to open up the living to a new shaded porch on the water. The roof of the porch spans thirty feet over the elevated pool, framing long views over the bay, with only a delicate steel column holding its corner. Two cuts in the same roof turn the large porch into a three-dimensional sundial.

The original structure at Yankee Point was a simple 1970s home with “good bones.” Unfortunately, it was also a case where less-than-poetic considerations threatened to eclipse design. Setbacks, height and footprint restrictions and other building regulations had boxed in the renovation to the point where there was literally nowhere left to build. Fortunately, the house sat 6' above grade on the ocean side. With some three-dimensional ingenuity, this ultimately provided ample space to add a new full height lower level without exceeding stringent lot coverage limitations. Today, upon entering the residence, you catch a quick glimpse of the ocean views and of the cascading roof lines designed to echo the motions of ocean waves beyond. The space opens up as you move toward the ocean to reveal a panoramic view.

Our clients purchased a condo in the heart of Chicago after deciding it was time to move from their longtime suburban home and embrace their dream of living downtown. Leaving their family home where their children grew up meant that our work needed to do two things for the family: help make the most of their new city life and create a warm and welcoming home for their two college-aged children. We used grays, browns and creams accentuated with pops of orange and yellow to transform the condo into a warm, modern space. We sourced unconventional light fixtures and custom rugs for each room, as well as an assortment of clean-lined furniture including modern classics like a black Eames lounge. Each room features original art—everything from a three-dimensional installation to abstract paintings and photography. Modern amenities, such as power-operated window treatments and an electric fireplace, were seamlessly integrated into the home, ensuring that the client can enjoy their space with a flip of a switch.
