Like many California ranch homes built in the 1950s, this original master bathroom was not really a "master bath." My clients, who only three years ago purchased the home from the family of the original owner, were saddled with a small, dysfunctional space. Chief among the dysfunctions: a vanity only 30" high, and an inconveniently placed window that forced the too-low vanity mirror to reflect only the waist and partial torso--not the face--of anyone standing in front of it. They wanted not only a more spacious bathroom but a bedroom as well, so we worked in tandem with an architect and contractor to come up with a fantastic new space: a true Master Suite. In order to refine a design concept for the soon-to-be larger space, and thereby narrow down material choices, my clients and I had a brainstorming session: we spoke of an elegant Old World/ European bedroom and bathroom, a luxurious bath that would reference a Roman spa, and finally the idea of a Hammam was brought into the mix. We blended these ideas together in oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, and a tiny tile mosaic in beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece. The new generously sized bathroom boasts a jetted soaking tub, a very large walk-in shower, a double-sided fireplace (facing the tub on the bath side), and a luxurious 8' long vanity with double sinks and a storage tower. The vanity wall is covered with a mosaic vine pattern in a beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece,. The custom Larson Juhl framed mirrors are flanked by gorgeous hand-wrought scones from Hubbardton Forge which echo the vine and leaf pattern in the mosaic. And the vanity itself features an LED strip in the toe-kick which allows one to see in the middle of the night without having to turn on a shockingly bright overhead fixture. At the other end of the master bath, a luxurious jetted tub nestles by a fireplace in the bay window area. Views of my clients' garden can be seen while soaking in bubbles. The over-sized walk-in shower features a paneled wainscoting effect which I designed in Crema Marfil marble. The vine mosaic continues in the shower, topped by green onyx squares. A rainshower head and a hand-held spray on a bar provides showering options. Jasmine, bougainvillea, figs, olives and a sizable vegetable garden and orchard round out the planting profile. Not to mention the ultra low-water NO-MOW lawn. Used regularly for dogs & soccer.

Small spaces can provide big challenges. These homeowners wanted to include a lot in their tiny backyard! There were also numerous city restrictions to comply with, and elevations to contend with. The design includes several seating areas, a fire feature that can be seen from the home's front entry, a water wall, and retractable screens. This was a "design only" project. In south Seattle, a tiny backyard garden needed a makeover to add usability and create a sitting area for entertaining. Raised garden beds for edible plants provide the transition between the existing deck and new patio below, eliminating the need for a railing. A firepit provides the focal point for the new patio. Just off of the master bedroom in our recently completed George to the Rescue project was a small and original bathroom. Tiny, pink, and stuck in the '60s, it was a less than ideal place for a working mom of two kids to start and end her day. We created a bright and fun, but low maintenance retreat for her behind a custom sliding barn door. We claimed an additional 2 feet for the bathroom by moving the wall and stealing a bit of space (it wasn't missed!) from the bedroom. Oversized ceramic subway tile laid to look like shiplap (shiplap! Everyone loved shiplap!) gives the now spacious shower an updated farmhouse feel. Exaggerated shower hardware (an 18" handle!), @hansgroheusa faucets (generously donated!), a pivoting rounded rectangle mirror, and a pair of articulating arm sconces all in matte black finish punctuate the space and mirror the hardware finish throughout the renovation. The elegant floral Anna French wallpaper is a surprising background for the substantial charcoal and white marble-topped vanity, and makes this a feminine space, just for a well-deserving mom.

This tiny suburban Toronto yard contained a small flagstone patio and a small patch of lawn. The children were now in their teens, so the lawn was no longer needed as a play area and was the perfect size for a "plunge" pool. The patio was slightly enlarged and re-configured to integrate with a small pool featuring matching natural stone coping and a limestone water feature. The remaining perimeter was filled with a colourful mix of plantings and shrubs. It's a small area, but it was put to good use. (12 x 27, humpback kidney)

This picture gives you an idea how the garage, main house, and ADU are arranged on the property. Our goal was to minimize the impact to the backyard, maximize privacy of each living space from one another, maximize light for each building, etc. One way in which we were able to accomplish that was building the ADU slab on grade to keep it as low to the ground as possible and minimize it's solar footprint on the property. Cutting up the roof not only made it more interesting from the house above but also helped with solar footprint. The garage was reduced in length by about 8' to accommodate the ADU.
