Inspiration for a contemporary home gym remodel in Chicago

Architect: Michelle Penn, AIA This barn home is modeled after an existing Nebraska barn in Lancaster County. Heating is by passive solar design, supplemented by a geothermal radiant floor system. Cooling will rely on a whole house fan and a passive air flow system. The passive system is created with the cupola, windows, transoms and passive venting for cooling, rather than a forced air system. Here you can see the underside of the gambrel roof and the stairs leading up to the cupola. The stair railing was created using goat fencing. We combined the textures of white high gloss and vertical grain stained oak cabinets to really make the millwork stand out against the cool, concrete colored flooring and neutral walls. With its self-proclaimed beauty, this home is basically begging to host a fabulous dinner party!

This renovation was completed with the primary goal of removed the carpet in the stairs which was not only difficult to clean but constantly looking worn in this very busy household. Ideally they wanted a durable, low maintenance flooring solution that still added character and coziness. The solution: Luxury vinyl planks! The unique and discreet metal nosings we used respect the clean lines and richness of this amazing plank in a non-commercial way. NOTE: While not all vinyl planks are created equal - the good ones are worth paying a little extra for!

This home renovation story begins with John and Barb, a fabulous couple looking to remodel their 15-year old winter home in Bonita Bay, Bonita Springs, Florida. Living in the home only part-time, spending their summers in Oconomowac, Wisconsin, John and Barb had an idea of what they wanted, but didn’t know how to bring it to fruition. They also needed someone who they could trust to renovate their home while they were away in Wisconsin. Their vision for their home started with a new kitchen, family room and wet bar. Enjoying their time outdoors and on their lanai, they also envisioned improving their indoor-outdoor living space. With the help of Progressive Design Build, this couple’s home was designed and completed remodeled while they were away, transforming the common area of their home into a more user friendly, functional space. Emphasis was placed on the kitchen and the open floor plan. New tile flooring was installed throughout the space, with all new painting that matched the homeowner’s style and taste. A new Anderson door was also installed from the kitchen to the outdoor living space, replacing heavy sliding glass doors and making access to the lanai easier and more functional.

A young couple with three small children purchased this full floor loft in Tribeca in need of a gut renovation. The existing apartment was plagued with awkward spaces, limited natural light and an outdated décor. It was also lacking the required third child’s bedroom desperately needed for their newly expanded family. StudioLAB aimed for a fluid open-plan layout in the larger public spaces while creating smaller, tighter quarters in the rear private spaces to satisfy the family’s programmatic wishes. 3 small children’s bedrooms were carved out of the rear lower level connected by a communal playroom and a shared kid’s bathroom. Upstairs, the master bedroom and master bathroom float above the kid’s rooms on a mezzanine accessed by a newly built staircase. Ample new storage was built underneath the staircase as an extension of the open kitchen and dining areas. A custom pull out drawer containing the food and water bowls was installed for the family’s two dogs to be hidden away out of site when not in use. All wall surfaces, existing and new, were limited to a bright but warm white finish to create a seamless integration in the ceiling and wall structures allowing the spatial progression of the space and sculptural quality of the midcentury modern furniture pieces and colorful original artwork, painted by the wife’s brother, to enhance the space. The existing tin ceiling was left in the living room to maximize ceiling heights and remain a reminder of the historical details of the original construction. A new central AC system was added with an exposed cylindrical duct running along the long living room wall. A small office nook was built next to the elevator tucked away to be out of site.

An entry foyer is transformed into a progressive of spaces that travels from public to private foyer. Within this design exists a subtle contrast between old and new, rather than a mere match of the two. The existing moldings surpasses their original role as decoration to become an integral part of the design, but they do not obscure the modernity of form.

This project encompasses the renovation of two aging metal warehouses located on an acre just North of the 610 loop. The larger warehouse, previously an auto body shop, measures 6000 square feet and will contain a residence, art studio, and garage. A light well puncturing the middle of the main residence brightens the core of the deep building. The over-sized roof opening washes light down three masonry walls that define the light well and divide the public and private realms of the residence. The interior of the light well is conceived as a serene place of reflection while providing ample natural light into the Master Bedroom. Large windows infill the previous garage door openings and are shaded by a generous steel canopy as well as a new evergreen tree court to the west. Adjacent, a 1200 sf building is reconfigured for a guest or visiting artist residence and studio with a shared outdoor patio for entertaining. Photo by Peter Molick, Art by Karin Broker

The existing kitchen was a work in progress, with many items left unfinished or exposed. We renovated the entire kitchen, leaving the sink and range in the same locations, but re-vamping all of the finishes except for the existing clay red floor tile which runs throughout the house. Unlike most kitchens, the existing kitchen had wonderful lighting and extensive views to the outside due to strategically placed windows between the countertop and the wall cabinets as well as large casement windows on either end of the galley kitchen. New custom kitchen cabinets with stainless steel pulls were installed between the large casement windows to maintain the views and light quality. The countertop is a white low maintenance quartz material. A tall band of white glass tiles run along the backsplash to underline the long bank of windows. Opposite the work counter is a bank of tall cabinets housing the pantry, utility closet, refrigerator, water heater, and a built-in microwave. We re-used the ingeniously located track lighting and track heads, replacing the existing mismatched CFL bulbs with all new LED bulbs throughout the house. We also added new LED undercabinet lighting along the work counter to provide task lighting.

We were able to resurface over the existing ordinary concrete with our wood plank stamped design with a dark walnut stain. Project completed in Maryville Tennesee in 2016.
