Tired of working from their tiny apartment during the beginning of the pandemic, we helped these clients bring new life to this adorable split-level home, by focusing on efficiency with a touch of glamour. The existing house from 1952 had great bones, and some fun features, such as a nice layout and corner windows, but was feeling worn and dated, and needed some attention. We were tasked with a quick-turnaround project, celebrating the home’s midcentury past, while making the spaces feel cohesive and fun. We were also asked to create more visual connections between spaces. We designed new walnut cabinetry to surround the existing fireplace, re-worked the home’s entry, replaced the cabinetry in the kitchen, added a bar in the dining room, and enhanced the storage opportunities in the upstairs bedrooms and throughout the house. We continued a clean and modern materials palette throughout. These include warm white walls, refinished dark wood floors, walnut and painted cabinets, and luxe brass fixtures; all the finishes tie together and made the spaces feel more connected and full of whimsy. Designed By: Sarah Buehlman Marc and Mandy Maister were clients and fans of Cantoni before they purchased this harbor home on Balboa Island. The South African natives originally met designer Sarah Buehlman and Cantoni’s Founder and CEO Michael Wilkov at a storewide sale, and quickly established a relationship as they bought furnishings for their primary residence in Newport Beach. So, when the couple decided to invest in this gorgeous second home, in one of the ritziest enclaves in North America, they sought Sarah’s help in transforming the outdated 1960’s residence into a modern marvel. “It’s now the ultimate beach house,” says Sarah, “and finished in Cantoni from top to bottom—including new custom cabinetry installed throughout.” But let’s back up. This project began when Mandy contacted Sarah in the midst of the remodel process (in December 2010), asking if she could come take a look and help with the overall design. “The plans were being drawn up with an architect, and they opted not to move anything major. Instead, they updated everything—as in the small carpeted staircase that became a gorgeous glass and metal sculpture,” Sarah explains. She took photographs and measurements, and then set to work creating the scaled renderings. “Marc and Mandy were drawn to the One and Only Collection. It features a high-gloss brown and white color scheme which served as inspiration for the project,” says Sarah. Primary pieces in the expansive living area include the Mondrian leather sectional, the Involution sculpture, and a pair of Vladimir Kagan Corkscrew swivel chairs. The Maisters needed a place to house all their electronics but didn’t want a typical entertainment center. The One and Only buffet was actually modified by our skilled shop technicians, in our distribution center, so it could accommodate all the couple’s media equipment. “These artisans are another one of our hidden strengths—in addition to the design tools, inventory and extensive resources we have to get a job done,” adds Sarah. Marc and Mandy also fell in love with the exotic Makassar ebony wood in the Ritz Collection, which Sarah combined in the master bedroom with the Ravenna double chaise to provide an extra place to sit and enjoy the beautiful harbor views. Beyond new furnishings, the Maisters also decided to completely redo their kitchen. And though Marc and Mandy did not have a chance to actually see our kitchen displays, having worked with Sarah over the years, they had immense trust in our commitment to craftsmanship and quality. In fact, they opted for new cabinetry in four bathrooms as well as the laundry room based on our 3D renderings and lacquer samples alone—without ever opening a drawer. “Their trust in my expertise and Cantoni’s reputation were a major deciding factor,” says Sarah. This plush second home, complete with a private boat dock right out back, counts as one of Sarah’s proudest accomplishments. “These long-time clients are great. They love Cantoni and appreciate high quality Italian furnishings in particular. The home is so gorgeous that once you are inside and open the Nano doors, you simply don’t want to leave.” The job took almost two years to complete, but everyone seems quite happy with the results, proving that large or small—and in cases necessitating a quick turnaround or execution of a long-term vision—Cantoni has the resources to come through for all clients.

This all white brick and siding exterior home with a 2-car garage was built in Flowery Branch, GA in 2021. Its exterior includes a slate tile flooring front porch and awnings over the front first story windows. Additionally, the exterior displays a wide (5 window) dormer which provides for some of the second lighting, a turnaround drive and a fully sodded and landscaped yard. The kitchen is equipped with custom cabinets, stainless steel appliances, a large island with sink, hardwood flooring, and herringbone tiled backsplash. The kitchen flows into the eating area and family room for an open concept layout. The family room features a modern fireplace flanked with built-in shelving and cabinetry. An extensive, fully equipped laundry room is accessible from the kitchen and garage areas. Hardwood floors are installed throughout the first floor. The master bedroom was designed with a tray ceiling, recessed can lighting and an array of window sizes for creative natural lighting. The master bath has his and hers vanities, a walk-in shower and separate water closet. The large walk-in master closet is equipped with built-in shelves, drawers, seating and window lighting. This centrally located intersection to a main thoroughfare a block away was a concern because of the corner lot visibility issue for cars making a turn driving in either direction. The Quince tree bloomed annually for just a short time and was originally planted by the prior home owners decades ago. Keeping it maintained to a height of 4’ maximum, dictated for safety reasons, was still obstructing and limiting the visibility of oncoming traffic at this busy intersection. The existing roses planted in the same space as the Quince were a perfect backdrop to the new perennials and annuals planted to paint this corner with flowers. The project also included expanding the beautification to both corner areas in coordination with several other planting areas already seasonally updated on the property. With the Redwood Tree as a focal point and Roses, Daphnes, Iris, Azaleas, Fuchsias, Hydrangeas and Camilias highlighting the planting beds the addition of color, including around the driveway and side entrance, transformed the entire space. This Caledonia, Ontario bungalow has a pool with walk-out access to an outdoor patio on the foundation level. Above the ceiling, which is I-beam construction, is the living room. The owner wanted to contain moisture and sound within the pool area, while creating aesthetic appeal and remaining within budget. Most residential spaces only require stretch ceiling support around the perimeter of the room, but swimming pool rooms are unusually large, so we opted to install the stretch ceiling in sections, attaching the support profiles directly to the I-Beams. The client chose a golden classical graphic to print on the centre sections. The entire family is happy with the results. The whole project came in at under $10, 000 and a turnaround time of less than 2 weeks.
