This room has a 7.1 surround sound system with five TV's. The owner is a self described sports fanatic and wanted a space where he could view five football games at the same time. He and his wife also wanted the ability to include their children in the room where they could play video games on the smaller TV's while the parents watched TV or movies. An RTI automation system was used where we designed a custom interface to make it easy to control the five TV's, five satellite receivers, two game consoles, a disc player as well as the surround sound system and motorized shades. Four headsets were included so their children could play games or watch TV on the smaller displays without conflicting with the audio from the large TV. Products specified for this system were Samsung, Marantz, DirecTV, Sony, Binary, Episode and Middle Atlantic.

This step-down family room features a coffered ceiling and a fireplace with a black slate hearth. We made the fireplace’s surround and mantle to match the raised paneled doors on the built-in storage cabinets on the right. At this home I had an upper cabinet custom built to match the existing cabinets above the desk. We refinished the cabinets with a buttery white lacquer and tiled the backsplash with glass pencil tile in warm brown hues. The walls received a fresh coat of creamy suntan paint. The home had a monstrous frame and drywall built in at the family room fireplace wall that expanded from wall to wall and was nearly three feet deep.. We demoed the entire unit and created a much smaller and shallower custom built-in. I designed it to fit the existing fireplace (which we moved to it's present location) and the homeowners new flat screen. They also now have a space to house their components beneath the TV to organize the area. Stone veneer and an MDF molding creating a dramatic mantle and a minty green coat of paint on the wall surrounding the unit give this built-in a striking presence in the room. And, the homeowner gained over fourteen inches of floor space in the family room.

In this transitional farmhouse in West Chester, PA, we renovated the kitchen and family room, and installed new flooring and custom millwork throughout the entire first floor. This chic tuxedo kitchen has white cabinetry, white quartz counters, a black island, soft gold/honed gold pulls and a French door wall oven. The family room’s built in shelving provides extra storage. The shiplap accent wall creates a focal point around the white Carrera marble surround fireplace. The first floor features 8-in reclaimed white oak flooring (which matches the open shelving in the kitchen!) that ties the main living areas together. Here are some practical tips for creating a beautiful, comfortable and thoughtful living room design. The living room in the house is the place where, as the name suggests, receives guests. However, the owners themselves relax here, spending time in front of the TV or a book, with drinks, pleasant conversation and other activities. Therefore, the living room should be the most comfortable place in your home. The place of the sofa in the design of the living room The sofa does not need to be placed in a draft. This means that it should not be on an imaginary line from window to door - if you drew a floor plan, it will just be easy to trace. 1. The sofa in front of the TV, diagonally from the door, is a great location. As if inviting you to sit down :) 2. Sofa near the door. A good solution if you often have overnight guests. 3. Corner sofa in the living room. Best placed in the farthest corner from the door. This will make the room look more spacious. Correct opening of the door in the living room. Inward or outward? Open inward or outward? There is no clear rule here, because everything depends on the layout and on the furniture placed. The main thing is that the door leaf opens freely and does not interfere with entering and exiting the room. Also, the door should not interfere with free access to the closet or dressing room. TV in living room size and location. Location. The TV is placed on the wall opposite to the sofa - this is the most logical and reasonable place for it in the living room. Moreover, the distance to it does not really matter: modern TV models can be placed close to the sofa. Cabinet or bracket? To your taste. The main thing is that the television zone looks neat and presentable. Provide in advance a cable channel in which all the wires and numerous sockets for the receiver, modem, set-top box, sound bar will hide. Nothing spoils a design like sticking wires! For this small space, the use of reflective materials creates an illusion that the space is much bigger than it is. The use of mirrors and glass throughout, produces visibility amongst the entire room. Neutral colors help bring in and brighten the immense natural light, the space receives through its windows and doors.
