Living room - large transitional formal and open concept carpeted living room idea in Atlanta with white walls

Wingspan’s gull wing roofs are pitched in two directions and become an outflowing of interiors, lending more or less scale to public and private space within. Beyond the dramatic aesthetics, the roof forms serve to lend the right scale each interior space below while lifting the eye to light and views of water and sky.

Imagine relaxing on one of two long verandas that define the front and back of this elegant yet easygoing Southern-style home. Ideal for a country getaway or seaside retreat, the exterior features custom columns, easy-care lap siding, an abundance of windows and porches and a metal roof.
One step inside, and it’s easy to see that Sunbreaker’s appeal doesn’t stop at the curb. Inside, a central main living space with a raised ceiling is open to the kitchen and upstairs balcony. Three sets of oversized French doors lead out onto a picturesque large porch. The triple French doors give the illusion of a wall of windows and take full advantage of views of the surrounding countryside or watery wonders.
A central kitchen and dining area are located in the center of the home flanked by two identical wings. The upscale kitchen has granite countertops, classic dark wood cabinetry a two-tiered island and an overhead lounge/loft. Mirror images of each other, the wings contain two suites with bedroom, bath and private balcony. Upstairs, a common lounge unites two bunkrooms. Symmetry has never been so beautiful.

My client for this project was a builder/ developer. He had purchased a flat two acre parcel with vineyards that was within easy walking distance of downtown St. Helena. He planned to “build for sale” a three bedroom home with a separate one bedroom guest house, a pool and a pool house. He wanted a modern type farmhouse design that opened up to the site and to the views of the hills beyond and to keep as much of the vineyards as possible. The house was designed with a central Great Room consisting of a kitchen area, a dining area, and a living area all under one roof with a central linear cupola to bring natural light into the middle of the room. One approaches the entrance to the home through a small garden with water features on both sides of a path that leads to a covered entry porch and the front door. The entry hall runs the length of the Great Room and serves as both a link to the bedroom wings, the garage, the laundry room and a small study. The entry hall also serves as an art gallery for the future owner. An interstitial space between the entry hall and the Great Room contains a pantry, a wine room, an entry closet, an electrical room and a powder room. A large deep porch on the pool/garden side of the house extends most of the length of the Great Room with a small breakfast Room at one end that opens both to the kitchen and to this porch. The Great Room and porch open up to a swimming pool that is on on axis with the front door.
The main house has two wings. One wing contains the master bedroom suite with a walk in closet and a bathroom with soaking tub in a bay window and separate toilet room and shower. The other wing at the opposite end of the househas two children’s bedrooms each with their own bathroom a small play room serving both bedrooms. A rear hallway serves the children’s wing, a Laundry Room and a Study, the garage and a stair to an Au Pair unit above the garage.
A separate small one bedroom guest house has a small living room, a kitchen, a toilet room to serve the pool and a small covered porch. The bedroom is ensuite with a full bath. This guest house faces the side of the pool and serves to provide privacy and block views ofthe neighbors to the east. A Pool house at the far end of the pool on the main axis of the house has a covered sitting area with a pizza oven, a bar area and a small bathroom. Vineyards were saved on all sides of the house to help provide a private enclave within the vines.
The exterior of the house has simple gable roofs over the major rooms of the house with sloping ceilings and large wooden trusses in the Great Room and plaster sloping ceilings in the bedrooms. The exterior siding through out is painted board and batten siding similar to farmhouses of other older homes in the area.

Outdoor living was not ignored in this elegant design. by Stephanie James, Allen and James Interiors. Taking advantage of the U-shaped home layout, the decorative patio surfaces nestled between the two wings are dressed with style and entertainment-friendly furnishings and accessories. Kingsley Bate and Gloster were tapped for the outdoor furniture.

The Atherton House is a family compound for a professional couple in the tech industry, and their two teenage children. After living in Singapore, then Hong Kong, and building homes there, they looked forward to continuing their search for a new place to start a life and set down roots.
The site is located on Atherton Avenue on a flat, 1 acre lot. The neighboring lots are of a similar size, and are filled with mature planting and gardens. The brief on this site was to create a house that would comfortably accommodate the busy lives of each of the family members, as well as provide opportunities for wonder and awe. Views on the site are internal. Our goal was to create an indoor- outdoor home that embraced the benign California climate.
The building was conceived as a classic “H” plan with two wings attached by a double height entertaining space. The “H” shape allows for alcoves of the yard to be embraced by the mass of the building, creating different types of exterior space. The two wings of the home provide some sense of enclosure and privacy along the side property lines. The south wing contains three bedroom suites at the second level, as well as laundry. At the first level there is a guest suite facing east, powder room and a Library facing west.
The north wing is entirely given over to the Primary suite at the top level, including the main bedroom, dressing and bathroom. The bedroom opens out to a roof terrace to the west, overlooking a pool and courtyard below. At the ground floor, the north wing contains the family room, kitchen and dining room. The family room and dining room each have pocketing sliding glass doors that dissolve the boundary between inside and outside.
Connecting the wings is a double high living space meant to be comfortable, delightful and awe-inspiring. A custom fabricated two story circular stair of steel and glass connects the upper level to the main level, and down to the basement “lounge” below. An acrylic and steel bridge begins near one end of the stair landing and flies 40 feet to the children’s bedroom wing. People going about their day moving through the stair and bridge become both observed and observer.
The front (EAST) wall is the all important receiving place for guests and family alike. There the interplay between yin and yang, weathering steel and the mature olive tree, empower the entrance. Most other materials are white and pure.
The mechanical systems are efficiently combined hydronic heating and cooling, with no forced air required.

With porches on every side, the “Georgetown” is designed for enjoying the natural surroundings. The main level of the home is characterized by wide open spaces, with connected kitchen, dining, and living areas, all leading onto the various outdoor patios. The main floor master bedroom occupies one entire wing of the home, along with an additional bedroom suite. The upper level features two bedroom suites and a bunk room, with space over the detached garage providing a private guest suite.

This grand house with 7200 square feet on one level is organized on an H-shape centered around a 30 tall light well tower between a 16 foot tall foyer and 16 foot tall Great Room. On one side is a Master Suite wing with a Study and two car garage. The other wing contains the Kitchen, Family Room, Circular Staircase "tower", four bedrooms, three full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, a laundry room, and an additional three car garage . The exterior is clad in stone, brick and stucco.

The home is designed around a series of wings off a central, two-story core: One in the front forms a parking court, while two stretch out in back to create a private courtyard with gardens and the swimming pool. The house is designed so the walls facing neighboring properties are solid, while those facing the courtyard are glass.

Atherton has many large substantial homes - our clients purchased an existing home on a one acre flag-shaped lot and asked us to design a new dream home for them. The result is a new 7,000 square foot four-building complex consisting of the main house, six-car garage with two car lifts, pool house with a full one bedroom residence inside, and a separate home office /work out gym studio building. A fifty-foot swimming pool was also created with fully landscaped yards.
Given the rectangular shape of the lot, it was decided to angle the house to incoming visitors slightly so as to more dramatically present itself. The house became a classic u-shaped home but Feng Shui design principals were employed directing the placement of the pool house to better contain the energy flow on the site. The main house entry door is then aligned with a special Japanese red maple at the end of a long visual axis at the rear of the site. These angles and alignments set up everything else about the house design and layout, and views from various rooms allow you to see into virtually every space tracking movements of others in the home.
The residence is simply divided into two wings of public use, kitchen and family room, and the other wing of bedrooms, connected by the living and dining great room. Function drove the exterior form of windows and solid walls with a line of clerestory windows which bring light into the middle of the large home. Extensive sun shadow studies with 3D tree modeling led to the unorthodox placement of the pool to the north of the home, but tree shadow tracking showed this to be the sunniest area during the entire year.
Sustainable measures included a full 7.1kW solar photovoltaic array technically making the house off the grid, and arranged so that no panels are visible from the property. A large 16,000 gallon rainwater catchment system consisting of tanks buried below grade was installed. The home is California GreenPoint rated and also features sealed roof soffits and a sealed crawlspace without the usual venting. A whole house computer automation system with server room was installed as well. Heating and cooling utilize hot water radiant heated concrete and wood floors supplemented by heat pump generated heating and cooling.
A compound of buildings created to form balanced relationships between each other, this home is about circulation, light and a balance of form and function.

The gentleman's study is a history lesson, with its vast collection of civil war artifacts. This space gave the perfect opportunity to display the homeowner's passion, that has been years in the making. The two wing chairs with their horn back crocodile upholstery are the perfect spot for a fireside chat. The oversized moldings continue creating the grand scale of this stately residence.

This formal living room boasts a camel back sofa upholstered in a striped yellow sateen fabric. The wing chair is a neutral fabric with flowers that include some of the yellows in addition to blues and peaches. Two blue swivel tub chairs flank the fireplace creating an intimate conversation area. The glass and metal cocktail table adds function without visual complication.

Sited on a steeply sloped hillside just under Reeds Plateau, the home is divided into two primary wings that separate the main living space/bunkroom from the more intimate master and guest suites. The outstretched wings frame a private patio while blocking the intense western exposure.
