Our lead designer, Derek, helped this Alexandria homeowner to create more storage, update the look and make it more functional for everyday use. At their initial free consultation meeting how to maximize storage in such a small space was the key issue with limited cabinetry space. Our team helped her create her vision of creating more storage and a better flow for the kitchen, as well as updating the look.
This project included removing the old cabinetry, countertops, appliances and flooring. We moved her range to a new wall opening up more countertop space for prep work. With this we also improved the storage space by taking the cabinetry to the ceiling, adding under cabinetry lighting and shifting the oven and microwave to create more storage in the kitchen for the homeowner. If you look at the first photo you will see we used under cabinet outlets due the backsplash walls not able to accept outlets. Derek worked with the homeowner to bring together an open feeling, transitional look with the new color scheme and stainless steel appliances. They also added a nice blue accent with the subway tile backsplash to contrast against the lighter cabinetry and countertop.
Some features to mention in this kitchen remodel include expanded storage, stainless steel appliances, a gas cooktop, more cabinetry drawers, and under cabinetry lighting.
The cabinets are from Crystal, they are MDF with the color "Perfect Beige". The door style used is the "Stirling" door. The counters are "Portico Quartz" from MSI and installed by Ashburn Granite and Quartz. We used a porcelain interpretation of hand-crafted bricks to give this home a classic feel The backsplash tile is 2" x 10" elongated subway tile, called "Brown London Rondine" from Conestoga Tile.

"We decided to do a complete remodel of our kitchen after the pipe burst in our kitchen. We picked Taylor Pro to work with after getting extensive quotes and looked at many reviews. Easy to work with, always on time, and cleaned up everyday. The TaylorPro crew installed everything from new cabinets and hardware, plumbing, appliances, and contracted painters, granite installer, and flooring for us. They raised our kitchen ceiling by six inches, installed new lighting, and fixed the area of damaged wall in the kitchen and dining room. Any issues we ran into during this long process were fixed immediately by Kerry or his team. The crew was friendly, punctual and cleaned up on a daily basis as well as an in-depth cleaning at the end of the remodel. We got our up dream kitchen and are so happy the way the dining room and family room look with new paint, lighting fixtures, and flooring. Although it was tough to be without a kitchen, the end result was more than worth it!"

In keeping with a bright, transitional-style design, the homeowners chose white perimeter cabinets, topped with Raven Caesarstone Quartz slabs in a dark slate color. For visual contrast, the island was painted a beautiful dark green and topped with Amara Nuovo Vadara Quartz countertops. To solve our clients' insufficient storage issues, the island was designed with plenty of cabinet space and pull-out drawer systems for specialty dinnerware, pots, and pans. The medium-stained wood floors tied all of the design elements together.
For further visual interest, Gayler Design Build added a Jeffery Courts white marble mosaic backsplash to the butler station/coffee bar area. The same dark slate Raven Caesarstone Quartz countertop used on the perimeter cabinets was also used here and expertly tied the kitchen areas together.
By keeping the cabinets white, utilizing under cabinet lighting, and adding glass to the upper cabinets with puck lighting, the entire kitchen space is now bright, airy, and inviting.

This piano teacher lives in a small townhouse on a beautiful lake in Reston, Virginia. While the home has a lot to offer, the third level master bath has always been a major issue.
While small and confined, the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes felt it had potential. By making better use of its sloped room and finding a bit of added space in an adjacent attic, the new design can truly be called a master bathroom.
The homeowner’s wish list included a large shower, a soaking tub and a long vanity with two sinks. With a built-in shower bench, storage niches, and a frameless glass enclosure, the new shower transformed the space. The soaker tub and judicious use of multi-colored tile emphasizes the contemporary flair the design has achieved.
The client greatly enjoys her dream bathroom. She has achieved her ultimate goal of large, usable bathroom with lots of amenities.

This porch was upgraded to maintenance free with Azek building products. Traditional in the design finishes for a clean, elegant and inviting feel. Some subtle changes were made like enlarging the posts for an appropriate scale. The we widened the staircase to welcome you onto the porch and lead you to the door. Skirting was added to provide a clean look, always a plus when it comes to curb appeal.

With a kitchen that felt small, cramped and uninviting, our Naples client wanted to remove the bulky island range hood that blocked the view of her living room. Solving this issue, Progressive Design Build installed a white Zephyr Lux hood that was flush with the soffit to open up the space.
Adding visual interest and functional use, two modern glass pendants were installed on either side of the range hood above the two-tier bartop. We also added open shelving to the right of the oven with a custom built-in coffee station below. For functional storage, a pantry was designed into the space with roll-out shelving. Additional features of this kitchen remodel included Dura Supreme kitchen cabinets, a 3×6 Tesoro Flower Glass subway tile backsplash, and Pompeii Milky Way Quartz countertops. Last but not least, this kitchen received all new high-end appliances including a plumbed combi-steam oven by Miele and a matching oven and an induction cooktop.

This modern home, near Cedar Lake, built in 1900, was originally a corner store. A massive conversion transformed the home into a spacious, multi-level residence in the 1990’s.
However, the home’s lot was unusually steep and overgrown with vegetation. In addition, there were concerns about soil erosion and water intrusion to the house. The homeowners wanted to resolve these issues and create a much more useable outdoor area for family and pets.
Castle, in conjunction with Field Outdoor Spaces, designed and built a large deck area in the back yard of the home, which includes a detached screen porch and a bar & grill area under a cedar pergola.
The previous, small deck was demolished and the sliding door replaced with a window. A new glass sliding door was inserted along a perpendicular wall to connect the home’s interior kitchen to the backyard oasis.
The screen house doors are made from six custom screen panels, attached to a top mount, soft-close track. Inside the screen porch, a patio heater allows the family to enjoy this space much of the year.
Concrete was the material chosen for the outdoor countertops, to ensure it lasts several years in Minnesota’s always-changing climate.
Trex decking was used throughout, along with red cedar porch, pergola and privacy lattice detailing.
The front entry of the home was also updated to include a large, open porch with access to the newly landscaped yard. Cable railings from Loftus Iron add to the contemporary style of the home, including a gate feature at the top of the front steps to contain the family pets when they’re let out into the yard.

This 1912 traditional style house sits on the edge of Cheesman Park with four levels that needed updating to better suit the young family’s needs.
A custom wine room was constructed on the lower level to accommodate an area for entertaining guests. The main level was divided into a smaller family room area with a double door opening into the formal living room. The kitchen and butler’s pantry were combined and remodeled for better function.
The second level master bathroom was relocated and created out of an adjacent bedroom, incorporating an existing fireplace and Juliet balcony that looks out to the park.
A new staircase was constructed on the third level as a continuation of the grand staircase in the center of the house. A gathering and play space opens off the stairs and connects to the third-floor deck. A Jill & Jill bathroom remodel was constructed between the girls’ rooms.

During a showroom meeting with Lana Galloway, CKBR, UDCP, while preparing selections for their Downers Grove Kitchen remodel, their third project in six years, our clients received a startling phone message; there was water coming out from under the door into the hallway of their 15th floor Sandburg Village apartment. This was to be their refuge while their suburban Kitchen was removed!
The kitchen waste stack, located at the Kitchen sink, had backed up into the unit. The issue had gone unnoticed for several days while the water encompassed a large amount of the unit, causing wood floor, cabinets and drywall damage.

Insurance claims were swiftly filed and soon Galloway began designing a second kitchen remodel. Our clients were so disgruntled, their first thought was to repair only enough to sell, but once the drawings and material selections began, there was a change of heart.
By removing the entry closet/book shelf, Galloway was able to enlarge the existing kitchen footprint. In the new design, the refrigerator was moved to the right of the buildings existing chase, the chase was then disguised with a false pantry door, the Peninsula seated area was repositioned, and the work aisle expanded with the additional cabinetry on the sink wall. The dark stained engineered flooring, installed to the strict codes of the building, creates a sleek back-drop for the contemporary cabinetry.
The beauty inside this unit now matches the glorious views of the city and our clients are now enjoying their two new LaMantia Kitchens.

A Good Design Can Improve Safety
Bathrooms and kitchens are the most hazardous rooms in the home. Grease, falls, spoiled liquids and fires are just a few of the safety issues that you need to keep in mind when planning a kitchen.
Aside from following the rules and guidance, the majority of safety rules are based on common sense. Here are some things that a good design should take into account:
Stoves or ranges should not be put next to a door or under a window
Ovens, fridges and freezers should not be placed next to one another
Refrigerators should not be placed in the corner of a room
Stoves should not be located near the sink
You should consider having a fire blanket nearby
For safety, remember the kitchen work triangle - this will help to minimise traffic encounters while cooking
Consider installing non-slip flooring
Pay attention to kitchen lighting (as mentioned above)
Research has shown that accidents are less likely to occur in a well-designed kitchen
