With several disconnected backyard spaces, the client desired a facelift, with a need to extend the flow of the kitchen to a new “outdoor room”. We designed an expansive deck at the same level as the kitchen to solve this need. An attractive room that provides space for dining and seating, and transitions to a “lower living room”, a side yard path, and easy access to the upper garden and adjacent studio. The new “outdoor room” became an extension and easy connection to the upper garden areas. The oval ornamental grass bed, decomposed granite edging, and flagstones that was implemented in phase 1, became integrated with the overall backyard design once the new deck was finished.

This sturdy wood staircase leads from the upper deck to the lower patio, framed by a brick exterior wall and clean-lined under-deck ceiling. The natural materials and subtle lines create a simple, functional connection between levels.

This angled aerial captures the craftsmanship behind a high-impact outdoor addition. The upper-level grilling deck and enclosed sunroom float above a two-tiered deck supported by sturdy columns and beams, all grounded in a clean concrete patio. A mix of materials—composite decking, stone accents, and pressure-treated wood—balance durability and charm in this elevated backyard retreat.

The finished project perfectly fits the scale of the space and looks like a natural extension of the house, and not an after-thought. The homeowners wanted to connect the pool with the deck. To achieve this, we excavated below the deck to build this out. The upper deck serves as an outdoor living room, complete with fireplace, lounge area, and kitchen. The gorgeous tigerwood ceiling (complete with heaters and fans), makes this a space that can be used year-round. The underdeck serves as the perfect hang-out spot after taking a dip in the pool, complete with a gorgeous textured aluminum ceiling in white to give the space an open feel. The floating monostringer stairs were strategically planned in order to maintain an open feel to the space. For this backyard we regarded the entire lot. To maximize the backyard space, we used Redwood boards to created two decks, 1) an upper deck level with the upper unit, with wrapping stairs landing on a paver patio, and 2) a lower deck level with the lower unit and connecting to the main patio. The steep driveway was regraded with drainage and stairs to provide an activity patio with seating and custom built shed. We repurposed about 60 percent of the demoed concrete to build urbanite retaining walls along the Eastern side of the house. A Belgard Paver patio defines the main entertaining space, with stairs that lead to a flagstone patio and spa, small fescue lawn, and perimeter of edible fruit trees.
