The existing kitchen wasn’t cutting it anymore. The homeowners designed and built this home about 20 years ago, but since then, their taste and needs changed. The outdated finishes felt outdated. There weren’t enough work areas. Some counterspace stations were just awkward due to the layout. Adjoining spaces around the kitchen were also in need of an update, but it was decided that the kitchen would undergo a transformation first. Design Objectives -Rework the overall layout (kitchen, laundry and butler’s pantry) to have a better flow and utilize the space better -Incorporate materials with wow and pizzazz to reflect the homeowner’s style -Design large work areas for cooking with two or more people at a time -Provide seating at an island in addition to table seating -Update surrounding spaces since the kitchen is open to the rest of the home Design Challenges: -Include a vast array of cooking appliances while having enough of cabinet storage -Adjacent rooms need to feel updated and flow with new Kitchen -Having multiple focal points with different materials but not have the space feel like a hodge podge -Provide different task, accent and overall lighting to brighten up space Design Solutions: -The homeowner loves to cook and wanted to maximize her abilities. We incorporated a 48” rangetop with a griddle, a single oven, steam oven, microwave drawer and 15” induction cooktop next to a 48” Galley Ideal Workstation with two faucets. In order to have room for all of these appliances, the floor plan needed to accommodate more cabinetry. Both dining room entrances were closed off and the laundry room entrance were moved to the opposite end of the wall to allow two long walls for additional cabinets. -The existing round columns throughout the first floor were outdated. To keep the architectural element of the columns, we wrapped the new columns to have a square shape with a flat panel on all four sides. Then, we painted them black (to tie in with the kitchen tops and curved hood surround) and added simple crown molding. For the flow of the space, closing up the odd corner that connected the laundry and dining room and relocating both room entrances allowed the space to actually feel larger and more continuous. --Adding the same square columns to the main dining room entrance, by the front door, also tied in the front of the house with the kitchen. -The homeowner loves unique and bold materials. The main focal point of the kitchen is definitely the custom metal hood that incorporates two finishes and is set on a Lumix quartzite full-high back and side splashes. To make this area even more pronounced, a hearth-like drywall arch encloses the space. Once your eye moves off the hood, you start to notice the mirrored refrigerator panels, high gloss island cabinets, mirrored metal backsplash tile, delicate pendant island lights and the stunning island countertop material! There is a good mix of materials that make every space shine. The blacks, golds and pewter finishes help tie everything together. -Lighting in a large kitchen is important. This space, besides getting a lot of natural light, needed lots of additional lighting due to the dark finishes. For overall lighting we have plenty of can lights in addition to lighting at the tops of the wall cabinets (that shine on the ceiling), undercabinet task lighting to make the tops sparkle and provide abundant lighting while prepping, pendant accent lighting over the island and a fandolier to add a little sparkle over the pub table. Voila!

We helped our clients to create a practical, modern and beautiful family home in Putney, South West London. The Brief The brief from our clients was to amalgamate an annex and original house building to create one practical family home. It was important the annex did not feel like an add-on, but rather as part of the original property. The Solution The design solution is to feature a series of new openings between the two buildings to provide subtle connections and routes between spaces throughout the house. The whole footprint was utilised and spaces were carefully arranged to maximise light and provide a more functional family home. Glass doors with steel frames were used in the hallway to open up sight-lines to the large rear garden and provide flexibility to the use of the space. The dining room features a hidden door into a secret lounge space that plays on the idea of there previously being a sense of separation. The Kitchen was made bespoke by Higham Furniture, a supplier we have worked with many times before and who are in our supplier directory. All the original external walls and ground floor construction have been insulated to exceed building regulation standards, creating a highly sustainable building. This is great for our clients carbon footprint and for keeping their running costs low. Externally, corner glazed full height sliding doors were added to provide a seamless transition between the lounge and garden. At roof level, a series of dormers were added to the master suite that help draw breathtaking views towards the London skyline. The rear garden was landscaped by Patios, Pots and Pergolas. The Result We are delighted with the outcome, which is a sustainable and functional single family home that responds well to our clients brief.

We created an almost crystalline form that reflected the push and pull of the most important factors on the site: views directly to the NNW, an approach from the ESE, and of course, sun from direct south. To keep the size modest, we peeled away the excess spaces and scaled down any rooms that desired intimacy (the bedrooms) or did not require height (the pool room). A deep but very thin overhang at the southern corner provides shade and drops a dramatic shadow mimicking the one seen at the entry porch. An incrementally tapering staircase carves a little more space away in the entry foyer and leads the eye to the main living area beyond. From the main living space, a ribbon of glass opens to the view down the hill and to the lake beyond. The exterior features locally milled tongue-and-groove cedar in two varying directions, with gaps not only at the verticals, but at the horizontal joints as well. This high-performance home needs just a single heat pump per floor and utilizes the gas stove only to take the edge off the coldest of nights, perhaps right after dip in the pool. Our newest product line, the Freestanding Canopy, utilizes the same ‘Single Track Design’ technology that catapulted ShadeFX as an industry leader in residential retractable shade. Our dual post freestanding structure is ideal for poolside application where large areas of coverage or high wind conditions exist. Gone are the days of repositioning and fumbling with umbrellas.

Our client was moving into a newly built family home in Inverallochy and wanted a kitchen that would be modern and functional. Their requirements included a large central island, a separate coffee-making area, and matching furniture to optimise the space. The Nolte Lux range was selected for this kitchen, pairing Magnolia colour furniture with Lava on tall units. This choice struck a balanced aesthetic while maintaining a modern look. We used 20mm Silestone Coral Clay for the island worktop and contrasted it with Nolte 40mm Platinum Bough Oak on the perimeter, including a 100mm breakfast bar. We used all NEFF appliances including two single ovens, a microwave, warming drawer, and induction hob to fulfill every culinary need. A Blanco Subline 1 ½ undermounted sink in Tartufo and a Quooker Fusion Square Stainless Steel instant boiling water tap were added for ease of use. This modern kitchen in Cos Cob was designed in the center of a modern house with simplicity in mind. We designed with high gloss cabinetry to achieve a modern and clean aesthetic. The back wall features the range withe pro-style hood, pot filler, and ample prep space on either side. The wall cabinets utilize lift-up hinges to preserve the symmetry and horizontal lines in the design. The master bath was also included and features plenty of storage space in the vanity and a stainless steel toe kick to amplify the modern look of the space.

In many regards, little has changed at New Hampshire’s Squam Lake in the nearly 35 years since the classic movie On Golden Pond was filmed there. The lake is still a generational favorite for family getaways and vacations in a traditional setting. But now, beautifully designed and strikingly contemporary residences are being constructed among the classic old cabins. A good example is the new Squam Lake House that is the year-round vacation retreat for a large and active family. Design for the 3,500 sq. ft. residence was significantly influenced by the site. The south-facing house follows the natural topography along the shoreline to maximize views and the passive solar effect. The building includes three linked masses called “wigwams” that include family bedrooms, communal living spaces and guest areas. “A part of the narrative was to reference the Native American culture of the area,” according to designer Patrick Kane, principal, Kane Architecture, East Hardwick, VT. “The large architectural zinc panels on the façade were meant to be reminiscent of the Abenaki Tribe wigwams which were made of large slabs of bark." Approximately 7,500 sq. ft. of RHEINZINK prePATINA blue-grey Standing Seam Panels were utilized in both roof and façade applications. Low or no maintenance was a key factor in the design from the beginning. “The owner didn’t want to own a single bucket of exterior paint,” Kane said. “We considered several metals initially but quickly settled on the RHEINZINK. We really liked the color of the prePATINA blue-grey. It has color qualities similar to the beech trees on the site and we really wanted the building to blend into the natural environment. We also liked the embodied energy. So we basically selected the RHEINZINK because of its environmental benefits and the unique color. ”With its passive solar effect, triple glazing and superior insulation, the structure provides outstanding energy efficiency. “The hot tub takes more energy than it requires to heat the entire house,” according to Kane.The Standing Seam Panels were installed by European Custom Sheet Metal (formerly Vintage Sheet Metal), Salem, NH.
