Marc and Mandy Maister were clients and fans of Cantoni before they purchased this harbor home on Balboa Island. The South African natives originally met designer Sarah Buehlman and Cantoni’s Founder and CEO Michael Wilkov at a storewide sale, and quickly established a relationship as they bought furnishings for their primary residence in Newport Beach.
So, when the couple decided to invest in this gorgeous second home, in one of the ritziest enclaves in North America, they sought Sarah’s help in transforming the outdated 1960’s residence into a modern marvel. “It’s now the ultimate beach house,” says Sarah, “and finished in Cantoni from top to bottom—including new custom cabinetry installed throughout.”
But let’s back up. This project began when Mandy contacted Sarah in the midst of the remodel process (in December 2010), asking if she could come take a look and help with the overall design.
“The plans were being drawn up with an architect, and they opted not to move anything major. Instead, they updated everything—as in the small carpeted staircase that became a gorgeous glass and metal sculpture,” Sarah explains. She took photographs and measurements, and then set to work creating the scaled renderings. “Marc and Mandy were drawn to the One and Only Collection. It features a high-gloss brown and white color scheme which served as inspiration for the project,” says Sarah.
Primary pieces in the expansive living area include the Mondrian leather sectional, the Involution sculpture, and a pair of Vladimir Kagan Corkscrew swivel chairs. The Maisters needed a place to house all their electronics but didn’t want a typical entertainment center. The One and Only buffet was actually modified by our skilled shop technicians, in our distribution center, so it could accommodate all the couple’s media equipment. “These artisans are another one of our hidden strengths—in addition to the design tools, inventory and extensive resources we have to get a job done,” adds Sarah. Marc and Mandy also fell in love with the exotic Makassar ebony wood in the Ritz Collection, which Sarah combined in the master bedroom with the Ravenna double chaise to provide an extra place to sit and enjoy the beautiful harbor views.
Beyond new furnishings, the Maisters also decided to completely redo their kitchen. And though Marc and Mandy did not have a chance to actually see our kitchen displays, having worked with Sarah over the years, they had immense trust in our commitment to craftsmanship and quality. In fact, they opted for new cabinetry in four bathrooms as well as the laundry room based on our 3D renderings and lacquer samples alone—without ever opening a drawer. “Their trust in my expertise and Cantoni’s reputation were a major deciding factor,” says Sarah.
This plush second home, complete with a private boat dock right out back, counts as one of Sarah’s proudest accomplishments. “These long-time clients are great. They love Cantoni and appreciate high quality Italian furnishings in particular. The home is so gorgeous that once you are inside and open the Nano doors, you simply don’t want to leave.” The job took almost two years to complete, but everyone seems quite happy with the results, proving that large or small—and in cases necessitating a quick turnaround or execution of a long-term vision—Cantoni has the resources to come through for all clients.

This beautiful mountain cabin has a big outdoor kitchen and dining area. Critters and flies were a concern so we enclosed the whole thing with stainless steel security screens. This tough screen is virtually impenetrable without power tools. It adds a lot of security to the home from burglars or bears! The screens are powder coated black and provide an excellent view through while providing some shade and glare reduction too!

Here is an architecturally built house from the early 1970's which was brought into the new century during this complete home remodel by opening up the main living space with two small additions off the back of the house creating a seamless exterior wall, dropping the floor to one level throughout, exposing the post an beam supports, creating main level on-suite, den/office space, refurbishing the existing powder room, adding a butlers pantry, creating an over sized kitchen with 17' island, refurbishing the existing bedrooms and creating a new master bedroom floor plan with walk in closet, adding an upstairs bonus room off an existing porch, remodeling the existing guest bathroom, and creating an in-law suite out of the existing workshop and garden tool room.

Kitchens are the heart of the home. It is a great honor for our customers to trust us enough to let us design their Kitchen. We start the design process off with evaluating the layout. We want to create the most effective layout for the cook(s) while also considering the view, storage and location to surrounding rooms. The working triangle is a tool that designers use to make sure your kitchen layout is effective. The working triangle is the relationship between the 3 major appliances in your kitchen: refrigerator, sink & cooktop/range.

This is the Vanity from our Master Suite Reconfiguration Project in Tribeca. Waterworks 'Henry' Fixtures were used throughout in Burnished Brass, which will age beautifully over time. Our GC developed a custom medicine cabinet with a metal frame to match the fixtures perfectly. Shaker Panels with a stepped detail, metal frames & applied mouldings set up a perfectly proportioned composition. Crown moulding was installed set off from the wall, creating a shadow gap, which is an effective tool in not only creating visual interest, but also eliminating the need for unsightly caulked points of connection, and the likelihood of splitting. The custom vanity was topped with a Neolith Estatuario product that has the look and feel of natural Statuary Stone, but better performance from a hardness and porosity point of view. Kelly Wearstler 'Utopia' Sconces and Shades of Light 'Moravian Star' surface lights were chosen to add a bit of flair to the understated transitional aesthetic of the project.

This view shows the addition, which is the 2 rooms along the back. On the left, we have french doors to the outdoor patio with built in's on both sides, for coats, grilling tools, shoes, etc. On the right, we have the eat in kitchen. Guest House, carriage house and bunk house are just a few names for a similar type of structure. Lake homes tend to require storage for boats and jet skis, or perhaps a vintage sports car, or even simply overflow guest parking. Maybe all of the above. Combine this with the living space above, and this accessory structure becomes a unique space by any name.
This barn-style space has five bays for cars and equipment, a workshop, and a full bathroom, all on the first floor, plus room for storage, tools, and easy access to clean up after chores. The Glass is the water line.
The elegant early lines of the golden era of yachting owe much to the eye of the master tradesman.Half models of intended designs were carefully shaped by our early boat builders.
Once happy with the shape of these half hulls, often only 18” or 2’ long, they would “loft” the lines onto the floor of their workshop and create full size plans of the intended boat from these early prototypes.
All done with the keen eye of a true craftsman. “The Bailey is a tribute to the skill and passion of New Zealand’s early shipwrights”. It is with this attention to graceful lines and technique in mind, we created the Bailey Table. Using traditional techniques and tools such as the draw blade and spokeshave these tables are crafted by hand and eye to an almost silky, fluid finish. A joy to touch and view from almost any angle.
Almost organic in touch and line, there are few straight lines to this sculpturally aesthetic piece.

3D Renderings can be used for a number of purposes. Sometimes, we need to see the space before it is built to be sure of our decisions. In other cases, municipalities require 3D views of proposed modifications. And for developers, 3D renderings can be a tool to help sell a building under construction. Whatever the need for a 3D rendering, AH Design Studio aims to produce 3D renderings of the highest quality where aesthetic and accuracy are top priorities.

Everything about this bathroom was small, including the amount of storage. The homeowner’s wanted a new design for their Master Bathroom that would create the illusion of a larger space. With a sloped ceiling and a small footprint that could not be enlarged, Mary Maney had quite a challenge to meet all the storage needs that the homeowner’s requested. A fresh, contemporary color palette and contemporary designs for the plumbing fixtures were a must.
To give the illusion of a larger space, a large format porcelain tile that looks like a natural white marble was selected for the floor and runs up one entire wall of the bathroom. A frameless shower door was added to give a clear view of the new tiled shower and shows off the iridescent glass tile on the back wall. The glass tile adds a glitzy shimmer to the room. A soft, blue paint color was selected for the walls and ceiling to coordinate with the tile.
To open up the floor space as much as possible, a compact toilet was installed and a contemporary wall mounted vanity in a beautiful blue tone that accents the shower tile nicely. The floating vanity has one large drawer that pulls out and has hidden compartments and an electrical supply for a hair dryer and other hair care tools. Two side by-side recessed medicine cabinets visually open up the room and gain additional storage for make-up and hair care products.
This Master Bathroom may be small in square footage, but it is now big on storage. With the soft blue and white color palette, the space is refreshing and the sleek contemporary plumbing fixtures add the element of contemporary design the homeowner’s were looking to achieve.

The building envelope was redesigned to provide a coherent architectural language through the use of vertical flat cedar siding, metal panels, and wooden rain screen elements. The pattern these three design tools create regularize the home's facade, providing the important function of both protecting the house from the seaside elements without impeding the magnificent ocean views the location has to offer.
