Inspiration for a contemporary home design remodel in Other

This young family wanted a larger kitchen that was more open to their living space. We removed the wall between the kitchen and former breakfast area to open up the rooms and allow for a larger kitchen with island. The original door to the kitchen from the hallway was arched, we copied that design on the new enlarged opening to the family room. By moving the mudroom doorway over allowed for a much better workable space in the mudroom and light now flows through from that area into the kitchen. This also gave us a nice long wall to place the bar on. The family room was quite large which allowed for the new eating area and fabulous built in display wall.

Adjustments to this kitchen made it more workable and updating appliances necessitated removing, rebuilding, sprucing up the some of the existing cabinetry and countertops with new. Lighting was updated.

This farmhouse, with it's original foundation dating back to 1778, had a lot of charm--but with its bad carpeting, dark paint colors, and confusing layout, it was hard to see at first just how welcoming, charming, and cozy it could be. The first focus of our renovation was creating a master bedroom suite--since there wasn't one, and one was needed for the modern family that was living here day-in and day-out. To do this, a collection of small rooms (some of them previously without heat or electrical outlets) were combined to create a gorgeous, serene space in the eaves of the oldest part of the house, complete with master bath containing a double vanity, and spacious shower. Even though these rooms are new, it is hard to see that they weren't original to the farmhouse from day one. In the rest of the house we removed walls that were added in the 1970's that made spaces seem smaller and more choppy, added a second upstairs bathroom for the family's two children, reconfigured the kitchen using existing cabinets to cut costs ( & making sure to keep the old sink with all of its character & charm) and create a more workable layout with dedicated eating area. Also added was an outdoor living space with a deck sheltered by a pergola--a spot that the family spends tons of time enjoying during the warmer months. A family room addition had been added to the house by the previous owner in the 80's, so to make this space feel less like it was tacked on, we installed historically accurate new windows to tie it in visually with the original house, and replaced carpeting with hardwood floors to make a more seamless transition from the historic to the new. To complete the project, we refinished the original hardwoods throughout the rest of the house, and brightened the outlook of the whole home with a fresh, bright, updated color scheme. This transitional kitchen starts from the ground up with durable new wood look laminate floors. A mid toned wood cabinet gives dome depth to the space. They're topped by a soft black quartz countertop that runs the perimeter of the kitchen. Above, white cabinets brighten up the space. A large island provides more workable countertop space to the owners, and a textured backsplash reflects the light on the walls.

Our clients wanted to re-develop their old basement into a more functional space that was bright, open, and modern. This was the result. A large L-shaped open space was created with a unique wet bar under the stairs. A bedroom was refreshed with paint and new ceiling, and a beautiful new railing installed where we removed the wall coming down into the basement. Also, the largely un-workable bathroom layout was completely re-done into a bright, beautiful, and functional room.

This island can swivel or move and the c-top slides from one side to the other! A 1930’s boathouse is renewed with an updated space and new pier, everything inside is new. Some new features include: Nanawalls, tall glass doors fold open completely onto a new deck, a working kitchen with an island that houses a hydraulic can swivel and move around on a whim, a sofa sleeper has double function, a TV is on a swing arm, and tables transform and combine for different needs. It’s a small space everything had to be multi-functional. Storage is a premium, a handcrafted ladder displays quilts when its not being used to access a loft space in a dropped ceiling. With nautical touches the revitalized boathouse shed is now a great place to entertain and watch the sun set on the water.

After - Kitchen Alcove. The cabinetry in this lovely little Alcove (which looks into the Family Room) was replaced and brought forward, expanding the workable countertop, creating a little bar that feels like it belongs in the space!

Vaulted ceilings presented challenges but were solved by extending the vent run to 14 ft. The clean lines of the JennAire appliances give a very transitional look to the room. The peninsula was converted to an island make the kitchen much more workable for this retired couple. The floor was made consistent throughout the house making the flow seem seamless from room to room.

The buyers of a 30-year-old townhome wanted a complete renovation to transition the property into contemporary open-space living. Walls and windows were removed, the sunken living room’s floor was raised, ceilings were opened up to soaring vaults and space from the large main bedroom was borrowed to make for a larger main bath suite. New ceiling geometry was designed to create an eye-pleasing attribute and a comprehensive lighting plan and fixtures were coordinated to feature each room’s focal points. Working with the homeowners’ tastes in mind, Karin selected a neutral color palette for wall colors, hardwood flooring, stone surfaces and carpeting. The kitchen layout design focused on workability and flow, with counter stools for quick bites and a bistro table and chairs for casual dining. A wet-bar was added across from a small parlor for reading and relaxing on sunny mornings. The living room’s focal point is a massive window-wall that opens to the stunning outdoors and deck, which was also raised to provide 100% single-floor living. The attractive fireplace features texture-patterned, multi-material tiles. The main bath suite features tandem sinks, a curb-less shower and a tasteful storage center for linens and personal items. All plumbing fixtures throughout the home are of a clean, contemporary design. Virtually all of the home’s furniture, rugs and accessories are new following comprehensive search and selection by Karin and the homeowners. This 11-month project successfully produced a very warm and inviting new home.

By removing the laundry room there is now a large workable kitchen. By using a wall of cabinetry it opens up the aria and gives it more air. In the wall there is a broom closet, pantry, integrated refrigerator, dish and glass storage and not visible a Microwave and coffee station on the end around the side of cabinetry

On the exterior, the desire was to weave the home into the fabric of the community, all while paying special attention to meld the footprint of the house into a workable clean, open, and spacious interior free of clutter and saturated in natural light to meet the owner’s simple but yet tasteful lifestyle. The utilization of natural light all while bringing nature’s canvas into the spaces provides a sense of harmony. Light, shadow and texture bathe each space creating atmosphere, always changing, and blurring the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor space. Color abounds as nature paints the walls. Though they are all white hues of the spectrum, the natural light saturates and glows, all while being reflected off of the beautiful forms and surfaces. Total emersion of the senses engulf the user, greeting them with an ever changing environment. Style gives way to natural beauty and the home is neither of the past or future, rather it lives in the moment. Stable, grounded and unpretentious the home is understated yet powerful. The environment encourages exploration and an awakening of inner being dispelling convention and accepted norms. The home encourages mediation embracing principals associated with silent illumination. If there was one factor above all that guided the design it would be found in a word, truth. Located within the Irvington Historic District, the project required a separate design review and approval process due to the proposed exterior modifications to the home. A previous remodel left the home as a jumble of spaces with lots of cabinetry, but little thought to the actual function of the spaces. The 57 square foot addition at the rear of the home enabled a remarkable transformation of the kitchen, taking it from a crowded L-shaped kitchen with little workable counter space to a beautiful large kitchen conducive to cooking and entertaining. The new kitchen opens to the backyard through a new 4-panel sliding door, which provides ample daylighting and extends the kitchen to the outdoors. A new bench and storage adjacent to the 4-panel door function like a mud room. New windows over the sink balance the daylight in the space and provide views to the exterior. A large nebulous space between the living room and rear of the home was given order and purpose through the addition of a new hallway, built-ins, and storage space, bringing the home back to a more traditional and functional layout. Stained fir woodwork and cabinetry matches the original woodwork. Reproduction brass hardware and light fixtures throughout the space add to the timelessness of the home.
