colourpop with limegreen and cerise towels to accentuate your lovely design

Candace Olsen did a bathroom once where she hid an ugly view and she used the ball chain you buy by the yard strung on a track to hide the window. Added a tremendous amount of sparkle at night. Might be fun in this application. Huge change! Hope you like your new space :)

It appears the photos were taken at night, which might explain the "dark" look. If you don't have anything nice to say (or at least offer constructive criticism) than why comment?

I guess people just don't get understated elegance.
melboudr, never mind the detractors, you have great style. Keep it coming! =)

Great job! Really, amazing! Just consider adding a curtain to window, I thin it would be amazing.

Modfan, I learned a long time ago in architecture school that, if you put your work out there for people to critique, you have to be ready for some negative remarks. The photos of the new bathroom are so astonishingly gray and dark that they provoke some strong responses. Perhaps you're right that the photos appear darker because they were taken at night. I hope melboudr will consider adding some photos taken in daylight.

Your hard work paid off and you've got a bathroom you love. You could add some silver accessories to give it a bit of sparkle, or warm up with some colour -- up to you. Dark bathrooms aren't all that unusual:

Your work looks very well done! So nice to have everything new, isn't it. I agree that some pops of color would help with the perception of it being too dark. (even the door is black). I'd vote for an accent color that isn't another dark color. I like white or a light green. I'd love to see a picture taken during in daylight.

Studio Z - it's a DIY job. It should be critiqued accordingly. There are nicer ways to provide feedback than some of the awful comments on here. I think it's a great first project - well done!

    Very chic. Beautiful job.

Katrina Carr, I stand by what I said. Pro or not, if you post your work, you have to know that some people won't like it. If you can't take criticism, don't post photos.
Wondering why you went from two sinks to one.
Agree, Katrina. Feedback, especially for DIY (but really for everyone!), should be constructive and generous - otherwise what's the point besides self-satisfaction? Besides, you can see they're not finished yet...there's a wire hanging down over the mirror where they haven't installed the light over the sink yet. They were obviously excited to share their achievement and looking for encouragement. And this space looks awesome!

I'm curious to see the finished-out window when you're done...you guys have such vision, I'm sure you haven't left it out of your plans!

    Great job!

Is it to late to add a tiled inset in the shower so that your shower necessities are neatly kept ILO sitting on the edge? It looks great and I think adding some silver accents would lighten it up a bit as another commenter wrote. Great job!

Not at all my style and yet even I can see what an awesome job you did!

It looks nice, the black vanity is everything

A liottle dark but maybe not in person needs accesories......great job
  • 11 years ago
Prison cell was my first thought. A Roman Shade with some color would be a nice way to brighten things up a bit...
A nicely patterned window cover would add some definite pizzazz to this bathroom. Or a painting hung over the window..if you dont need the light from it..Also wondering if you did a really cool light fixture over the vanity? That would make it pop as well and would complete the room.

    Gorgeous!!!
I like this a lot, but agree it could use some lightening up with accessories. Curious why the 2nd sink was removed? I'm assuming to save on space?

nice to see people in real life having the stones to go with a dark bathroom. I think it is awesome and warmer than the default stark white. I had an all beige/white bathroom (well done, yes) but the moment floor tiles cracked i instantly replaced them with dark brown tile and MUCH happier. Should have listened to my inner voice and gone for a dark one from the beginning.

Good job. Definitely not my taste as it's too bland, but can appreciate the effort you put into remodeling it.

As someone else mentioned, I thought these were black & white photos too. The makeover is certainly sleeker, but very cold and uninviting to me. It could do with a pop of colour. Bright orange or lime green would look good. Where are the towel rails?

Love the newly designed shower and tub areas - great choice on the tub! I would recommend adding a window treatment, like a woven wood, pictured.
very nice, i love that you also add colour with some bright towels :) Citrus colours would look fabulous
  • 11 years ago
    Too dark.
Way too dark and depressing. How about another make-over and just change the paint to a lighter pallet and see the responses.
what an improvement, love the tub and shower, just a little too dark for me....but great job!!!

I'd warm it up a bit by using wood in elements like bathroom accessories and on the window, which someone wisely suggested modernizing, and on the other hand, using bright colours on the towels and rug (turquoises or corals or any lively hue)

The word that first comes to mind is "masculine". I have one feature wall of black in my shower recess and the rest of the bathroom is neutral tones. So I like the black. But it does need a softer look.. Either way very much improved on what was originally there. Great job!

Very nice sleek design, i agree it's a bit too dark, main thing you like it! but you can brighten it up inexpensively with the last details,
on the wall next to your tub, for eg. you can get a towel bar

and even the smallest accessories add the colour

Hi---well, this is an amazing job you two did. Floor to ceiling tile throughout---Great! I do agree with others though, it's a bit dark and cave like. A pop of color will do a lot for the space---a window treatment---perhaps---a simple pattern or photography. Good Luck![houzz=

LOVED IT!, well done, it's chic and minimalist, I love the dark colors, for me dark colors are not depressing, the same way that white not always means light or yellow means "happy", depends of the style, place and taste.

And in my opinion you don't need colorful accessories, all in shades of grays and white will look awesome.

    Love It!!!!!!!!!!!

I really like your bathroom. Great job on the DIY. I agree on the need to add a spot of color. You could puck almost any color and make it look fantastic. I thought of either teal or yellow.

Here are some ideas if you went with yellow. Not sure about the window but a simple Roman shade in white would look great.

Wow - what an amazing job to do by yourselves. Romantic baths together?
Every time I come back to this room, I like it a bit more. I've gone from "you did a good job" to "I really like it!" Though I'm probably not bold enough to try it. Would love to see an update to see which light fixture and accessories you chose.

It appears the OP has not returned. Can't say I blame her, after the thoughtless comments posted by some (Morgue? Prison? Really?). I hope she did read on as most others do like the changes she made to her bathroom -- me included.

Wow, amazing, you are talented. Looks like a designer bathroom and looks much bigger now. Fabulous!

Hatetoshop, I agree and decided to visit the page of some of the more negative just out of curiosity. All I can say is to each his own. Everyone's aesthetic is different. But to me a prison is all white, antiseptic looking and stark. Even now I'm trying to decide what colors to paint my own builder's grade new home cuz the walls (all white) are closing in on me!
I'd like to reiterate this looks fab. Often, when people see something that is "dark" and not to their particular style the gut reaction is negative. Look again everyone. This is sleek and stylish!
