If you are putting pendants above the islandIwould eliminate the pendant above the sink. Since you have the Dining Room fixture so close to the island you might do 2 or 3 small surface mounted rather than pendants.

island lights would close in this space anyway, seems like the island is rather close to the fridge, if anythng your dining fixture is out of scale to the table and the room. are you keeping that table? second to that, you want to reopen the ceiling now? if so, i would re do all the cans they are sooooooo close to the cabinets as is

Yes, the beam runs through the center of island in ceiling. Hence why we have a small hole in ceiling. We started with cans and found the beam.
Island is 42" away, works great and counter depth fridge is coming, even better. My husband is an electrican. So switching around lights is pretty easy, however trying to prevent more sheet rock work.
Also, dining table stays and we do like the scale of light above table.

but if the beam is dead center of the island, and you couldnt put cans in? are you going with pancake boxes or something? hang the kitchen table light there. its too small for your table anywho.... here is an example, i would do one light over the island, and compliment it with the dining, unify the space, and the different wood elements.

I see what you're saying the beam runs across room from fridge area to French door. I thought about moving the dining light, but don't want to obstruct my view out to our garden. I like your suggestions. And we can put a pendent, something with a shallower box, but not a can. Also, the cans work well to have good lighting to see inside cabinets and task lighting on counters. Plus we have under counter lights too. We're lit! I do need some task lights over island. The dining light points up and isn't a good task light. Maybe 2 pendants. Something with glass to keep the view, but with similar finish as other lights. I am not a huge fan of light above sink, that's why I am ok to say goodbye to it and say hello to a can or something.
