I would add a flat roman shading with a valance and textured fabric to give the illusion of a window behind it or the look of a tapestry.

Start with another color. The oxblood red is way too heavy. In fact, keep all the walls and backsplash the same lighter color. Then think about large piece of art and possibly a larger round table. A more substantial light fixture that doesn't direct light down but spreads it out to actually light the room would work wonders to warm the space..

I too feel that red is too intense -- you could open up the space with a lighter color. How would you feel about floor to ceiling built-in book shelves? You could fill with books, art, artifacts and still leave space at the bottom for pet items. Stagger shelf spacing for more interest and do three sections vertically. Paint shelving same color as wall if you go with a light color wall or paint shelving the same color on adjoining wall (white?). A tan/khaki wall color that ties into the granite might be nice with cream colored shelving (or whatever is on the opposing wall). A drum shaped light fixture could be good and something with a little more color in the tablecloth.

I absolutely love that red, but it's an odd choice with the cabinets and granite, frankly. You might choose one of the colors in the granite for the walls, so that everything would blend nicely. Agree with others about adding art and a new light fixture.
