Help me choose an Area Rug

Just moved a few months ago into a pan abode wooden home. We have just finished our fireplace re-model now I need help with the rug. I ordered this colourful one from Pier 1 Imports as everyone said I needed to brighten up the wood - got it last night and do NOT like it. I also thinks it's too small for the space. What sort of rug should I go for - more traditional???
