Please help me choose vanity sconces for bath reno!

I have my new vanity and 2 existing mirrors. I am looking for 3 slim sconces for in between and on sides. The vanity is 72" wide, but the actual wall is 74.5" wide. The mirrors are 23.75"W x 33"H. The sconces will be primary lighting for the sink area. The recessed are coming our along with the soffit.
If centered on the vanity only - the spaces are 9" on outsides and 6.5" in the middle. that should allow enough spacing as is for something small or narrow. I could move the mirrors outward slightly to allow more even spacing like 8.25", 8, 8.25 or even use that extra 2 inches that goes to the walls. I would like to keep my little ORB chandelier and also use the ORB for all bath fixtures. I have looked at hundreds...any suggestions?

I am including a few styles I am considering, some in different finishes though, to give you an idea of styles I like. Also the photo above shows the vanity "waiting" in the foyer. We have weeks to go before starting.

Also, we are repainting the bathroom to a very, very pale blue

ok, two things, one; the sconces except one are very modern...is this because it is what would fit the space or what you like? the chandelier and mirrors are kind of old world traditional, so im not sure what you are leaning towards... second the chandelier is rust colored more than ORB so would you lke to match more to that, what do you think about painting the chand. ORB

take a look at, www.troylighting.com and www.elklighting.com this will give you some verity of more traditional/modern looks. and then look at www.kichlerlighting.com it helps to go to their actually websites. here is one from Troy lighting i really like

Thanks for comments. the look is more eclectic, and the ORB was added with towels bars, knobs etc with a facelift a couple years ago. The chandelier is not rust, but it is not black either.( ORB) It was just to add some bling to an otherwise very boring builder bathroom. I like to mix things up and can go in any direction. I am open to ideas. I did see the frosty ones above, but they don't appear to have much light to them. I still need to see in the mirror. I am torn between going more modern or just simple, not too ornate.

OMG Flair!!! that is the light I saw and then could not find!!! I love that one and concluded it fit the bill perfectly.
I stay up late searching for sconces when I should be sleeping. At least I did start to write the names down!
Are there any other suggestions from Lighting designers as to what would work in my space? I found this sweet little sconce that has only 40 Watts each. I like the fact that the antique brass with the ORB compliments the mirror frames. Is this 13" H x 5.5" W style a better fit?

Thanks Bunny. I was aware about the code. My favorite electrician told me as he was hanging the chandelier. It will have to come down for the reno anyway. VJ, I will look at your thread, although I am sure I have read it many times while searching :)

the style you have above, will work perfectly, and since you have can lighting, these are not as important to be bright, but rather "fill light" im not really a fan of shades in a bathroom tho, and also the light will not come out, but rather be focused down. Chandeliers are not against code but must be hung to a certain height above a bath tub. if its in the middle of the room you are fine. damp location is fine for bathrooms unless it is in the shower where i would want a wet label. TRy to find something with glass, and lets the light OUT not up or down. shadows do funny things to ones face

did you at least go to the links i advised? we can all give input, but you are currently shopping through to many pages on houzz and online.
Yes, I have looked at manufacturer websites. I also look at the design photos and when I see a light I like I look for "more info" to get the vendor name. Then I leave the houzz page and go directly to the web page through my browser. I look at are things, make notes and then go back to houzz. I search through photos, products and other posters' dilemmas on houzz. There are many ways to find lights, some times I am directed back to the big names like lampsplus etc, and they almost all carry the same things.
I also look at overstock, way fair, and anything else I can. Or I just google different descriptions and see what comes up.
I am going to a Ferguson showroom this week to look at all accessories.

You will have eyes like sconces ..
You are doing your homework ...
    Good luck
    That's my input.....
I wanted to remind flair lighting that I these sconces will be my source of light for the vanity area. The recessed lights are being removed.
Thanks Vintage for your nice comments. This is just as difficult choice as was picking a backsplash last Fall, but somehow I survived that.

ok, then ill tell you what i tell my clients. You are over thinking it. There are thousands of sconces. if you cant seem to find one, not even one........you are going to exhaust yourself. Try to narrow it down to 3 choices you like. I bet you are about cross eyed by now!!! why did you remove the pot lights? In that case you are going to need something long with light colored glass. no shaded fixtures no exposed bulbs. I still like my choice, and the LBL sconces each will give you very good light.

    Hi SunnyDrew--
The purpose of lighting around the mirror is to surround your face with light. The sconces should be equal height on either side of the mirror and positioned to fill in the sides of your face with light. For the overhead fixture, it should be about the same width as your mirror. and hung (an average height in most homes) about 66" from the finished floor. The mirror should then be hung 1-5" below the bottom of the fixture.

For your sconces, choose fixtures with light-filtering material, shades or opal glass that help to minimize glare. Here are 4 more easy-to-follow guidelines from Hinkley Lighting that will help you select the best sconce for your bathroom vanity:

    1. Install sconces at eye-level, approximately 66” from the floor (standard guideline).

    2. Depending on the amount of light the sconces cast, position them so that the horizontal beams overlap (typically 28” to 40” apart) and produce even, shadow-free light.

    3. To illuminate a double vanity, provide each sink with its own individual light source.

    4. A minimum of 150 watts should be used to illuminate the vanity and it’s always safest to select fixtures that provide the maximum amount of light. If you find that there is too much light, either use lower wattage bulbs or install a dimmer. It is always easier to reduce the lamping than to try and increase the amount of light once the fixture is installed.

To view a collection of bath vanity sconces from a variety of manufacturers, visit Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery online: http://shop.ferguson.com/search/wall-sconces It's a great way to generate ideas and narrow down what is possible in your space!

If you are looking to add a little drama to your bath vanity, I would recommend the Queen Bee sconce from Corbett Lighting or the Albion sconce from Hudson Vally.

Hi, thanks for the tips. We are actually going to the Ferguson gallery in Annapolis, MD tomorrow.
I am taking out the over the sink recessed lights, because the light is very unflattering and removing their soffit will add more space to the room. I had not planned or keep them at all.
I was looking for expert suggestions as to what size would be most appropriate since the vanity is only 72" wide and I wanted to keep the same mirrors. I think my best bet is a slim vertical fixture that has light going from the middle up and down. I like the idea of the drum shade on a sconce, but not sure that it would provide good enough lighting for shaving and make up, for both my spouse and me.
So many bathrooms here are much bigger, any sconce will work.
I was overwhelmed only because there are so many great lights on market, but I think I have narrowed down the selections. Like all the Houzzers, I guess I think I will miss something "better".
I always appreciate any suggestions and they do help me think it all through.

Hi @sunnydrew - Overwhelming is an understatement when it comes to lighting; there is so much out there and one can develop a serious case of FOMOOL (fear of missing out on lighting)!

A visit to the Annapolis showroom is a great idea. You'll see plenty of options and get to ask a lot of questions before you determine what style, size and finish is right for you and your new beautiful bathroom.

Did you make an appointment? If you haven't made an appointment, I highly recommend calling ahead and scheduling one. It's best to have the undivided attention of one of our product experts and an appointment really allows you to get the most of your time in the showroom. Be sure to bring the pictures you posted and your measurements!

Have fun in the showroom tomorrow and best of luck with your amazing bathroom renovation!
Thanks, Ferguson. I did go to the showroom today with an appointment. Rachel was excellent and helped us choose our beautiful Troy Roxbury lights exactly like Flair Lighting photoshopped for me above.
We also picked out all of our plumbing fixtures and accessories and decided to switch to brushed chrome for those, but keeping the ORB chandelier and framed mirrors that the sconces compliment so well. I think that mixing it up a little will be fine and a nice blend.
Thanks to all of you for helping me. It is a process of elimination I think.

We got our lights and I do like them, but I will note that the iron is more black than I would have liked with my ORB chandelier and the Amber glass shades have a greenish tinge to them that does not show in the photos. I am hoping when everything is installed neither of these will be a factor. I think with the bathroom totally renovated it all will look beautiful. We commence work in late December.

Hi @sunnydrew - You are right! Renovation projects are unique that way - the final product is greater than the sum of its parts. Seeing the products in their final setting is really important, as paint color and materials will have an effect on the overall result. It's kind of like clothing - a dress can look different on the hanger than when you try it on. Wait for all the pieces to come together, and then determine whether or not a change is necessary once you see the full picture. If you do want a change, having the final pieces in place will help you determine what change to make.

Please keep us posted on your project, and be sure to share the final pictures from your bathroom renovation!

Thanks for your comment. I was told that I could always order the more white shade for the Roxbury lights once they were up. I am sure it will all come together well as you said- the sum of all parts.
Houzz is such a fabulous source of ideas, info and "second opinions" to my own. It's like having my best girlfriend go shopping with me. Thanks for the advice. The Ferguson showroom was very nice as was the Penco/Kohler showroom I visited in DE. We are still deciding on our other elements, as per our budget.

sunny, what kind of light bulb is in the fixture. its probably the problem. and yes its more of an iron look on the metal. Paint the chandelier darker.
Hi Flair lighting. The sconces won't be installed for weeks, but I had opened them to see them. The glass shades lights you pasted on for me me way above in this thread look creamy beige but they are a color that has green undertones. I think that I was just little surprised by the color. They take 2 60 watts each, which will be nice and bright and should balance the color. The vanity is beige travertine.
The mirror frames have a little black on them and I think it will mix just fine. I do not want to pass judgement until it is all done.thanks for asking. I also think that the choice of cool or warm bulbs will be factor too.
I do like the style best and your Photoshop is exactly how I envisioned the vanity to turn out, although the the blue walls will be a very pale robin egg blue.
Thanks so much for your help.

yes just use regular light bulbs, or get a 2700K in any other type.
Thanks flair lighting. You have no idea what 2700 K is, but will look into it. I assume it is some type of new bulbs?
  • PRO
SunnyDrew - the 2700K is referencing the color temperature, a distinction required for LED lighting. Color appearance is communicated using correlated color temperature (CCT) on the Kelvin (K) scale. For most interior lighting applications, warm-white (2700K to 3000K) is preferred. Hope this helps!

Ok, now I am ready to show you the bathroom lights. I am waiting for shower glass before I post my complete before and after.

Thanks for the lighting suggestions everyone. For my helper at Flair Lighting, a special thanks. I love the sconces and my vanity looks so beautiful with them.

It is really nice to have the soffit with recessed lights gone from over the sinks too!

I will email the pictures. I am glad you made the connection, because I like to give credit where credit is due. How do I find your blog?
You, and others, are right when you say that our choices are overwhelming in designing spaces. It can be daunting, but I am much better at it now.
My bathroom has turned out as I envisioned and I will love it for many years to come.
    Thanks again.

sunny drew could you give me the name of the sconces? I really like them... couldn't find them in the troy webstite

Sunnydrew - can you tell me how high you installed the sconces, height to the center of fixture? I have similar sconces to install. Thanks.

wrcd, I centered the sconces vertically to hit the middle of the mirror frames. There is a number suggested somewhere, but basically you want it to be at eye level. That is the best light. I removed the over sink recessed lights.
I drew out all the measurements to be sure it would all fit and then drove the electrician crazy to be sure they were installed evenly across the wall, as it was very tight.
I was sorry to leave that house after all that work, but our new (2014) bathroom is what sold the house in 4 weeks.
    Hope this helps.

Hi SunnyDrew. I followed all that you wrote about the changes to this bathroom, because ours is almost identical to yours in the original state. It was very helpful to see the new mirrors in place in your first edition and know how that size mirror will look over that particular Vanity. I realize you have moved from that house, but I am think you might remember this...you changed from the overhead lighting to the 3 sconces. After you installed the sconces, do you remember if the light they provided was enough compared to what you used to have? Also, I wanted to see if you have any advice for me on how to get people to give advice on my question. I posted it a few days ago and only got one comment on the day I posted. Thanks for any tips!
