how were the clear balls held onto the newels? Glue?

I am trying to add the crystal balls to my newels and would like to know how they are fixed to the newel.

Place a large ball of silicon sealant on the painted cupped surface and gently press the glass ball down to remove any air bubbles. When the sealant has dried carefully cut the squeezed out sealant with a very sharp blade. It will be staying there for a very long time so make sure you dont want to move any time soon!

The balls are set in a curved support at the top of the newel, which keeps the crystal balls in place to a certain degree, and then set in place with a glass adhesive (basically a glue). Check with your local hardware store and they can help you pick out the right adhesive to do the job.
