Start in the center.

You have several choices:
Center a grout joint in the space
Center a tile in the space
Center a grout joint or a tile in the doorway.
These decisions depend on what other openings come into the space. Sometimes uneven cuts work because of how the tile connects to other areas.
You also need to consider what type of pattern you are laying.
Experienced tile setters and designers often measure and mark all of the options to see what's best before proceeding.

I always start in the middle. The center gets either a whole tile or a grout joint depending on which layout gives me the largest tiles on the sides. You don't want to end up with slivers of tile; they don't look good. Do a dry layout first going both directions to get a sense of how the tile will meet the edges and doorways.
