Space, music and sports themes are usually popular. You could also paint the room navy or dark green and use white or cream for the ceilings and trim; all of the colors should have a brown tone to pick up on the natural wood that's in the room. Another option is to go on a site like Customized Walls and either upload a photo of your own or pick from one of their designs to get really cool, easy to remove wallpaper.

Do you already have furniture or anything else that you're starting with? Team colors? Interests - sports, music, technology, travel?

I just have a twin size bed. However, my son is 13 and he wants a bigger bed. Following older brothers - he plays water-polo. He has some photos, from water-polo tournaments. He likes all sports now... I want to set him a computer desk and put some shelving to take him away from a dining room table.

This image is a picture of a younger boy's room, but I wanted to share it with you in order to give you some ideas of how you can find a theme and go with it without going overboard. What is your son's hobbies and passion? If his main interest in water polo and he has some pictures, then this is an excellent start. I like the idea of bigger beds for older kids, if their room allows for one. You can also go to PBteen.com and get some inspiration from there. I always recommend to create different zones for different activities. Once the zones are defined and the spaces are organized, your son will love spending his time in his own "grown up" room.

A full size bed would be more comfortable. You don't have to get a bed, just a mattress, box springs and frame.

This is a fun concept for a boy's room, even if you don't do the sqares: I'd blow up some of your son's photograph and add them to the shelves.

Ikea has shelving and desk systems that you can put together to meet your needs: Here is another desk in a boy's room, where the furniture is more flexable after he's grown up.

Hello eyebrow -- I would start with those water polo photos. Blow one up huge, or several large, and take all of your colors and direction from those. While turning a photo into wallpaper is an option, it's a bit more permanent, and I'm guessing you'll want your backdrop less themey.

How about asking your teenage boy what he would like and getting him to help you make it happen? Seems like it could be a nice opportunity to bond over the paintbrushes??

What I like about is how sophisticated and practical it is. A space like this could serve him through college. Instead of a dresser there is a bed with storage drawers as well as plenty of workspace and storage. It looks like his room has space for all this plus enough open floor space for other activities.

His tastes will change quickly over the next 5 years as he changes from a boy to a young man and I think a space like this could easily be personalized to express the changes.

Find his passion and use it as an inspiration. You can get his fave sports figure and make a life size wall decal that is applied like window static cling for his wall. Take colors from that and repaint the walls. I would scour craigslist and find a futon bed, a night stand and dresser or go to Ikea. They have things you can assemble that are really great for those who change ideas every 5 years.

Built in bookshelves or else ones from Ikea would be great, perhaps built around a desk (consider Ikea) so that the space is inviting for doing homework. Agree that using the water polo shots as part of the decor by framing or using photo trees so that the images can be changed very quickly/easily (a base w/a wire and clip at top to put the photo in... easier to change vs a photo frame and can be very fun... easy to find at Aaron Bros or Target, etc). Perhaps some "coat hanger" decor that can be used instead for medals won from sporting events to personalize space and showcase talents. I'd kill the green walls and opt for something more conducive to sleep since it IS a bedroom. Maybe one accent wall in a more sophisticated color? Perhaps fav team color? If going w/a bed frame and no headboard, could get a very large corkboard to hang on wall at "head" of the bed to create the illusion of a headboard but would also do double duty to allow him to put what he wants on it to make it his own space. The frame of it and shape would create the feel of a headboard.

Definitely use a full size bed. Create a desk with shelving to get him out of the dining room. Great move. Perhaps you can use sports as a theme but in a more mature way with jerseys of different teams in shadow boxes. If this is not possible, then perhaps memorobilia on the shelves. Keep it from getting trendy. Do a blue or grey on the walls. Use denim or khaki as boys love these materials. We do cornices and simple upholstered headboards so they can take their tablets or laptops into the bed and work from there in addition to the desk. See recent boys room in progress photos here.

Here are some low to the floor double beds in an attic bedroom designed for two teenage boys. I really like the mix of bold dark and light colors, modern details, and some rustic touches like the low table. It looks like a room anyone could enjoy sleeping in, but is also great for teenagers.

Like BB, from above post---your son is old enough to have some definite ideas on HIS room! I know my d-i-l told her 3 teen-agers that they could pick any color--and she'd help them paint...SUCCESS! Not suprising at all---one plays football and has decided on what college he is going to play for--Blue & Orange! One chose Lime green and black--the g-daughter--pink & purple. Since we, the adults are NOT the ones spending time in the room...(gag on blue and orange!)...Happy kids!
*side note* When I was raising my kids...I wanted them to learn about choices...so I started off giving them color choices for their clothing(of MY likes that I could live with)....NO black clothing or later, their bedroom wall colors, so I'd give them the choice between the colors I did approve....They never missed not having the choice of black clothing/wall color, since it was NEVER an option! BTW--they turned out great and are great parents! ;o)

If you don't want to paint the green, what about adding three wide horizontal stripes around room in a rich blue, such as Ben Moore Van Duesen Blue (HC-156), than adding shelving above a desk for storage & display (keeping them in line with painted stripes) Not sure of room dimensions, but looks like the double bed could fit under the window with room for a small night table on the right side - that seems like it would open up the main area for lounging & desk space. This also elimnates the need for a headboard - just use some large pillows for reading, etc. For the floor, a graphic striped or chevron patterned rug would add a lot of punch. Many of these items are available at Ikea for great prices, and you could use two rugs side by side if a larger rug is too expensive or unavailable. Positively use water polo shots as artwork, in bright white or black frames with wide mats (look at Target or Michael's Craft Stores)

Pottery barn teem is alway a place for kids to look at for inspiration. It will be fun doing this together. Good luck- they grow so fast!!

I had teenage boys and they definitely liked to hang things like posters and school flags, banners on their walls besides pictures. If you don't want a lot of holes ( which are easily spackled anyway) go to a teachers supply and get some of that putty stuff and tell them they can use it to stick the posters up with or small thumbtacks. You might want to add a large bulletin board on one wall because they will have a place for notes to themselves or a calendar. You can buy a desk but you could also get plywood or an old door (paint it a great color) and hang it from chains on the ceiling if you dont have the budget and get a comfortable chair. If your son agrees, look on Shutterfly b/c they can convert a photo of him into a vinyl sticker for wall art.
