Would you consider this home too modern...or too traditional?

This home was built as a spec. We wanted to create something that was modern/contemporary but also traditional. The term we used to describe this aesthetic was “transitional” because it was a transition from traditional to modern. The question is: what do you think? Should we have gone more modern, more traditional, or do you like the blend?

I don't see anything traditional about this house. It doesn't really look modern either, But certainly not traditional.

It is definitely more towards the modern/contemporary side as opposed to a normal straight-up "traditional" aesthetic...very true carolbrandywine. More of what Jolene was saying in that it just had a twist of traditional. This "twist" on the exterior came from the siding, the trim work, the single-hung windows (as opposed to casements which I would normally go with on a more modern style), and the soft color palette (dependent on just how modern the style is, some would go more daring with the colors). The interior traditional twist came from the paneled cabinetry, the interior paneled doors, the hardware (contemporary yes, modern no), and even the lighting fixtures. Granted, some of the fixtures may be too much for the hardcore traditional folk, but believe me they are too tame for my extremely modern clients!

It's modern all the way. Using single hung windows on it and calling it a twist in traditional is like putting white-tailed tires on a Tesla and calling it a twist on traditional. IMO.

Modern that is dressed as transitional (outdoor colours/siding/cladding + indoor comfortable finishings). I'm a fan of California and West Coast Modern so I'm in love with this type of home. Scandinavian modern is a bit too far for me...but I would take it if presented to me ;-). I think you have made a modern foot print that is decorated in comfortable finishes. There are comfort-touches everywhere while still remaining "modern" at the core. I likey, likey.

Glad you guys like it. In our opinion, we would say it is mostly modern for sure, but the "twist" is subjective. When you ask 10 people what modern is, they'll show you 10 completely different images. This same house could have been done clad in bright red metal, blue glass windows, stainless steel counters, metal doors, etc. but that isn't what we did. We used siding. We used "traditional" windows. We used normal finishes. We say it has a "traditional twist" because, well, how else would you say that it is not full-on "Jetsons" modern? One thing I've learned after 16 years as an architect; verbiage doesn't mean a whole lot. Thanks for the comments everyone :)

Definitely more of a transitional-contemporary, no? I like it....it's perfect for a lot of clients who want clean updated lines but with the comfort, warmth and familiarity of a more traditional home. Great job!

This is a modern home. Very elegant, based on earlier versions of modern architecture. It reminds me of the Prairie homes of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Actually Gilmans you nailed it: "transitional"...that was the whole point of this project. We wanted to make an aesthetic that was clean-lined for those that liked contemporary with a dash of modern, but not full on "Jetsons" as I referred to above. We wanted this to be a home for people that leaned traditional to take a baby step (maybe a big baby step!) towards the modern/contemporary. Great observation! :) We were actually overwhelmed at the reception this home received. It sold for more $/sf than any other home has in the past in a very prestigious local. It far exceeded everyone’s expectations.
