critter control

I hope I ask this in the right forum. I also did a search and didn't find quite what I want.
With all the natural disasters happening, I want to be prepared. I would like to grow my own food (enough to eat fresh AND store for winter would be great!). I live in a basement apartment and would be growing my veggies/fruit in containers. I would put them out during the day to get sun and fresh air, and bring them in at night when temperatures are too low.
My concern is the critters getting to my seeds/plants before I do. Last fall I planted iris and tulip bulbs for some spring cheer, and the squirrels kept digging them up and eating them! (actually nibbled a little and left chewed up bulbs on the patio).
Soooo, I would like to know what to do in order to keep pests out. We got squirrels, mice, voles, birds from little finches, robins and magpies...never seen a crow on the ground, but they're always flying around. My cat will catch the little things like songbirds and mice, but won't even look at the magpies or squirrels.
I work all day, otherwise I could just stay outside and watch my plants all day.
