Planted Sweetcorn Today

Today I planted the first planting of sweetcorn...Ambrosia. I covered the 4 rows of about 18 feet long with 6 mil clear plastic. The plastic serves 3 functions.

First it warms the soil whenever there are any solar rays. Secondly it keeps cold rains off until the plants emerge. And thirdly it is useful if there is a frosty night...it can be used overnight as a cover.

Last year I sowed the first planting on April 13th and it did splendidly though I had to cover it twice on chilly nights of frost.

I have already used the plastic on my earliest snow and sugar snap peas and likely will use it for the first planting of green beans.

The clear plastic is not recommended after the solar heat is too intense...just for early spring.
