Try DE (Diatomaceous earth). You can get that at your local nursery. It is organic (small skeletons from the oean that will 'cut up' the ear wigs.

it is my understanding that earwigs are preditor insects, just wondering if they may have been after cabbage maggots or aphids? I have just started noting this insect a bit, hoping it can help out in the gardens. sure hate it when they get in a nice peach, not sure what they doing in there?

We have also had what I call, the beer bugs, little black beetles with white spots. They were also under the cabbages. I never saw anything else. When we planted the cabbage, we planted in a raised bed and staggered the rows. Do you think this provided the earwigs with a nice moist environment? Would it be better to plant in a straight row next year? That would provide better air movement around the plants. Marg

Earwigs will eat living plant matter, especially tender shoots.

They also like cool dark places to hide, which might also explain why they are in your cabbages.

Anyway, DE never did much for me to deter them. The best thing that I've found is to lay out damp rolled up newspaper (corrugated cardboard might work, too). They'll move in, and you can then remove the newspapers, earwigs and all to your trash bins, or throw them on the coals while you BBQ.

You can also check out Sluggo Plus which is safe around vegetables. Sluggo is safe around kids and pets, but I'm not sure about the Plus version.
