Painting with a chair rail

We recently purchased our home and want to make the old girls room our sons' room. (ages 5 and 8 months so factor in a crib in there) I want to paint light grey and navy blue. There is an existing chair rail on two of the walls that I like, it adds character to the room but do I paint the darker color on top or bottom? The other two walls will be grey. The room gets plenty of light. Also trying to decide how to decorate with such a high chair rail. The top of the moulding is 58". Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I just did 3 of my rooms with chair rails. The rails are just as high as yours. The purchased the bed comforter first, then did color matches to the comforter. The two colors are from the bed, in one room it's greens/teal . So i found the perfect shade at the paint store, then I went 2 color stops darker. The darker goes on the bottom. The lighter color goes on top. All my rooms turned out amazing.

A hint when decorating- always put the darker color or heavier pattern at the bottom.
Even with using pastels, the hue that appears or feels darker works best at the bottom.
Thin of it as grounding. Earth is heavy compared to clouds light. That's why most of our cielings are white, or light in nature. it feels better. Good luck on your project!

Gray and navy blue! I love that combination. Normally, the darker color would go on the bottom to ground the room, but in my front bathroom I went the opposite way - off white on the bottom, beige on top and I love the look. I would suggest painting two poster boards with your colors, then move them around until you get the combination you like.
