not enough space around island!

After measuring for the depth of the range we ordered for our new kitchen, I have found that we are only going to have about 34 inches between the range and apron sink in the island. What is the optimum space needed around an island?

The range hasn't been installed yet, but it seems like the cabinets are not going to be out of proportion to it. The island is just too close. It seems like we, as the homeowners, shouldn't be the ones to catch this much of a design error--am I wrong?

I had the same problem. The cabinet builder and my husband decided to add an "overhang" on the end of the island for a sitting area which was a nice idea but made the island too long. Fortunately, I was able to move the island to one side of the kitchen (open floor plan) and get another smaller island.

So what is the measurement of the walkway right now?
right at 36 inches without the range, countertop or sink installed. That is from base cabinet to base cabinet.

It is a little tight. Here in NYC sometimes we see as little as 34" but it's in extreme circumstances and tiny galley kitchens. It is best to have at least 42". Was the Island Installed too close, perhaps, is there more room behind it? Or is it 36" walkways all around it?

There is a little more room on the back side, which opens out into the breakfast area, but because of the width of the island it can't really be pushed back without making those walkways feel tight. I'm thinking we will have to cut the island down a little. It seems to me like the designer or the builder or the cabinet installers should have caught this problem sooner--am I wrong?

Somebody should have caught this, yes! I would go back to original kitchen design drawings and whoever measured the space, look at the plan view and see what it is drawn as and what it scales as. But it could be that it was drawn right and the builder decided to ignore it, or something else came up that wasn't relayed back to the designer. Either way, it should absolutely been caught when the island was being installed. i can't imagine the installer working in the 34 inch walkway and realize that something was off..

I took a picture of the space today. You can see from the mark on the floor where the range will come out to, not including the handles, which add another 2 inches. That leaves only 32 inches of space.

I would do whatever you need to do in order to give yourself a minimum of 42". I also moved things a bit at the last minute to increase my space between range and island-end from 42 to 48-50", and I am SO glad I did...especially every time I open the oven door! I know it must be frustrating, and I would certainly tell your builder/designer that you are disappointed. Hopefully they will make it right, but even if they make it difficult, take care of it now. Once it's done, it's done....and you don't want to look back with regret.
Beautiful natural light in there! Good luck!

I agree, if you have to cut down the island in the back this is the time to do it, since the cabinets are unfinished, it shoudn't be too big a deal..

Thanks for the confirmation. I think we'll have to cut the island down by about 10 inches and switch the microwave to the area next to the range where the trash pullout was going to be. That can go in the island in the smaller space. Just hoping our builder will step up and not make us pay for the whole thing!

Trash should be next to sink and dishwasher, too, the microwave makes more sense to be next to the Range. I am sorry you are stuck with this, but these are things designers know and look out for. Not sure what happened:(
  • 12 years ago
It will end up around the corner from the sink/dishwasher side but I think it will be good. They were trying to put it in proximity to the sink. This is not our first "design issue." :-(

Microwave in proximity to sink? You have three holes there, put the Trash to the right from sink, DW to the right, and Microwave in the hole next to the range. That's hat I would do. Why are you stuck with this?
it's two dishwashers--full on the right and 2 dishwasher drawers on the left.
Oh, ok, that makes more sense:)

I am sorry to even ask this question, as it seems like you've already had so much to agonize over, but is the need for 2 dishwasher locations a must? Big family? I'm asking because I think that your trash situation (new location around the corner of island) "may" become an inconvenience you look back at with a bit of frustration. If you could eliminate one of those dishwashers, it could solve your problem (and save you some money on the appliance)
OR....Could you put the microwave in place of any upper cabinets via a "microwave cabinet"?

This is a good question. The decision to go with 2 dishwashers is based on our area/resale value as well as our family. Having never had either two dishwashers OR a garbage pull out, we were trying to arrange everything as well as possible given the layout of the kitchen. The builder is looking at the situation today. To me, it seems the simplest solution is just to switch the microwave and garbage but we'll see what he says. I'll just be glad to not have a garbage can sitting out, but I can see where it would be more ideal to have it closer to the sink.

Ultimately it is up to you, taking into account how 'you/your family' move in your current kitchen....and what you would like to improve through this new kitchen. Like you said, you may be happy just to not have a garbage can sitting out. If not having 2 dishwashers in your area is not good for resale, then stick with the 2 washers. If , however, it doesn't matter that much, then think about how your family uses the dishwasher, uses the trash, etc. My family of 5 typically does one load of dishes each night, but there are days when I don't run it and once in a great while, days where I have to run it twice (holidays, etc). For me/my family, it would add no benefit to have a second dishwasher. And in my kitchen, the pullout trash next to the sink is the only cabinet showing "wear" after our renno 9 years ago because it is opened/closed at least 20 times a day (3 kids: 2 in middle school, 1 in preschool).
It all just depends on how you 'personally' use (or "will use", as your family grows) your kitchen.
Good luck with everything and enjoy that beautiful space!

Yes, that is too tight ! Is there a way you can change the range to a more 'standard' depth so it doesn't stick out as much ?
No, not willing to change the range. There really isn't a smaller one that would give enough space, anyway.

Definitely try to move it the island to 48" if you can, because another consideration is you have the two main work stations back to back. 48" spacing allows more comforable back to back working and passing comfortable. 42" might be OK. But 36" is definitely a one-butt kitchen workspace. It may be even too tight for one with all those appliances opening near each other two.
My parents have a countertop-only island (no appliance int it) with 36" spacing to the sink along the wall. But to pass behind anyone at the sink, they have to lean in and flatten against the sink and you have to do that half sideways turn to go by. The area in front of their stove is 42" I believe, which works. However, it's not back to back with another work space.

You definitely want to do something about this now. The island will have to be rearranged to keep that space between the counters at least 40-42 inches. Its relatively easy to find new cabinet boxes to fit a narrow size - even uppers installed on one side of the island will make it narrower. Keep your trash disposal area close to the sink - that's where it will be used. Which dw option will be used the most? That's the one that should be closet to the sink - I've even installed the second dw in a pantry because that was where the entertaining dishes were stored. It isn't really necessary to have the dw close to the sink for rinsing before washing if you get a high quality machine.
