Need static electricity help

Every time I visit my grandchildren I'm always cuddling with a baby blanket and say outloud, "why don't they make big blankies like this for grownups" since they're sooo soft. lol.

Well, my DIL was listening and she gave me THE snuggliest blankie to use on the sofa for when we (and our dog) lay there watching TV in this cold weather.

I got it out and it is FULL of static electricity, so bad I had to take it off the sofa!

Do I have to wash and dry it with Bounce to get it out, or is there something OTC I can spray on it?

If I put it in the dryer on "Air Dry" with Bounce, would that take care of it?

Oakley, you can get a spray called Static Guard in the laundry aisle and spray it on the blanket. It also works great for static-y clothing and stuff. I used to put a little of it on our carpet when the static built up in the winter. For your blanket, I'd spray it outdoors, since the odor is very strong at first but then disappears.

I would wash it since it's something you snuggle with, same as washing new sheets. It will probably be even softer.

I agree with Folkvictorian and Mitch. Wash it with a gentle detergent, use good dryer sheets, & then spritz on some Static Guard. Should result in a blanket that feels soft, smells fresh, and has no static.

I think I'll use the static guard for now and see how it turns out. I've heard of Static Guard forever but have never thought about using it. Thanks!

Good suggestions above. Don't be afraid to toss it in the dryer with a dryer sheet for a ten minutes or so as well. I tossed a wet tablecloth in with some ds's shirts (because he hadn't removed them from the dryer...) When the cloth was dry it was sooooo staticy. Tossed it back in, put in a dryer sheet...ten minutes later, no static at all.

We also keep a can of static Guard in the car for touching up slacks and skirts before going in to church or a business appointment. I hate static cling. lol

I have kind of a funny/awful Static Guard story. A number of years ago I worked with a woman who kept a can of that stuff (or something similar) in her desk and during the winter months when things went "electrical", she'd get it out and spray up under her dress to keep it from sticking to her legs. One day a man walked by the office and saw her do this, and later I overheard him asking another male colleague, "Was she using feminine deodorant spray?"

A comment completely inappropriate for the workplace, to be sure - but it was another place and time, and it's certainly a comment I've not forgotten!

If you already have a dryer and softener sheets wouldn't the easiest thing be to throw it in there for 10 minutes and see if that helps before you go out and buy Static Guard?

    Cute story Jen.

I can't go back, still laughing!!!

Okay, I'm cracking up here! I don't blame the man for asking though. lol.

Massive cold front comes in tomorrow so I'll have the SG handy after my trip to the store, and I may do the dryer first.

Either way I can't wait to snuggle with it. Oh, this morning I watched my grandkids, Elizabeth is 3 mos. old, so after her nap she and I rocked in the recliner with one of her large fluffy baby blankets!

Vinegar is good for static electricity. I rarely use fabric sheets as I have read they can cause a build-up in your dryer (fire hazard).

Static guard - I would read the can carefully. If you are going to be using this close to the fireplace - i'm thinkint it is flammable. Not sure how that would affect the blanket. BUT, I do not use these types sprays (febreeze, etc. too) with pets.

All the reviews on SG are excellent. I highly doubt I'll spray the blanket near the fireplace though. I plan on doing it outdoors then let it dry before it comes inside.

In fact, look at all the different uses for it. Come summer I'm definitely going to use it for my cat's hair when they shed.

Off to spray, then Febreeze the furniture!

I also wouldn't use it because of the animals even though it says otherwise. I don't use dryer sheets and vinegar works for us. I'd try the other things first. Did you end up buying the SG? Hope one of them works for you! Getting zapped isn't fun.

Vinegar for static? How does that work? Use it in the wash? Do your clothes smell like vinegar? I don't like using dryer sheets (not earth friendly) but I cannot stand the static on all the clothes if I don't.

Jill use in place of or mixed with liquid fabric softener. Vinegar is also good to rinse new clothes with to help keep color from running.

The clothes don't smell like vinegar. If it's something I also like to be a little fluffier (like a blanket or throw) I'll do a mix of softner and vinegar.

There are liquid forms instead of dryer sheets if you don't like using those. But, give the vinegar a try and see what you think.

I cut dryer sheets in 3 and the small piece does the job fine; I even reuse the sheets a few times, also works......
