One thing to keep in mind is that most home inspectors are not trained in code compliance and therefore should not be offering guidance on structural design issues. You would be better served by contacting a licensed structural engineer to get details on what is required for support. For instance, there are many different types of beams from dimensional lumber to Paralam (laminated) beams that have different load characteristics. How the beam is tied into the existing structure, whether you required a "moment frame", additional footings to carry the point load of the beam, etc. etc.

Protect the safety of yourself and your family, and maintain the re-sale value of the home by consulting with a licensed structural engineer for guidance before proceeding.

The inspector I refer to is the City Inspector who stamps our approved architectual plans. When we removed the exterior wall, we realized, that the span is too wide not to have a support beam or 2 walls on either side. Our original plan showed 2 small walls on either side. The new headers and all the ceiling stuff was already signed off. This was a design question more than a compliance question. But thanks so much for the response.

Oh, I see now. Thanks for clarifying. Also, I think you mean a "post" (vertical) and not a "beam" (horizontal), according to your design picture.

From a design perspective it sure would lend a more open feel without the post. Depending on the structure, you may be able to up-size the beam in the ceiling or use an engineered beam capable of carrying the load at your span and eliminate the post.

BTW, I used to be a general contractor and did kitchen and bath remodeling. I've attached a pic of a project where we used laminated beams to carry a load after removing some walls.
