Possible kidney problem - possibly Previcox?

Wolfy, my 13-year-old Husky-Shepherd, has been on Previcox for arthritis for over a year. He was prescribed one pill per day, but until recently we were able to get by with 3/4 of a pill per day--one pill one day, and a half a pill the next. But a month or so ago he started having more trouble getting up and walking, so I increased it to the original dose.

This morning I found a big spot in one of the dog beds, soaked with a tan-colored fluid. It didn't appear to be urine (and I've seen a lot of urine). I remember years ago one of my cats produced a similar fluid in large quantity, and it turned out he had kidney tumors.

I don't know for sure that the puddle I found today came from Wolfy (I have another elderly dog), but I suspect it did. He's been a little off lately, and didn't eat his dinner last night.

I have an appointment with a new vet tomorrow. His regular vet wasn't able to see him at a time I could come (I go to work mid-afternoon), but he said Previcox does not cause kidney problems. Is that true? It seems contrary to what I've read on the Internet, although I don't know how reliable my sources were.

Thanks!

Susan

    Hi Susan,

Here is my experience ... older dog (husky/lab mix), now 12, on Previcox for at least a year for arthritis. Went to the vet in December and he had lost a bunch of weight, Dr did blood work and one of his indicators for kidney or liver function, I forget which now, was out of whack and she was really concerned. I posted about it then.

She immediately took him off Previcox, and gave him Tramodol instead. I thought it was the beginning of the end ...

This past weekend, we went back and he was re-tested, and all his kidney and liver indicators are back in the normal range, and he's gained most of his weight back.

Now I'm not blaming Previcox by any means ... I have changed his diet, he's on better food ... I make sure he's eating, etc, etc ... but I don't think being on Previcox helped.

    Good luck with Wolfy ...

    Susan,

Here's the post I made asking about Low Protein food, which is what my vet recommended ... there is info from the Pets Forum "resident" vet Meghane about Previcox.

All NSAIDs, including previcoxx, can cause kidney, liver, or GI problems. It may not be common, but it can occur.

How is Wolfy doing today? Any news from the vet? I hope he is well.

Thanks, Pam and Meghane. This is going to sound airheaded, but I'm not certain which dog has the problem.

When I called to make an appointment with the vet, Wolfy was off his food and seemed a little quieter than usual. By the next morning, he had eaten the night before, had normal urine output, and was pressuring me for treats. I called the vet office and said it was possible my other dog had produced the unusual puddle, so they said I should put off the appointment and observe the two dogs for a while. That's what I'm doing. At the moment, both of them seem fine.

This is beginning to remind me of the time I ate fresh beets, peed pink, and thought I had a problem. :-)

Glad to hear that he's eating! Dakota gets finicky about food, seems like every other day .. that's why I was surprsied to see he had gained back a lot of the weight he had lost. This morning he left 1/3 of his bowl ... had to pick it up quick before Lily ate hers and his! I had to get her weight DOWN, and did that, now to maintain it.

And I don't think it sounds airheaded .. it's tough when you have multiple animals to sometimes pin down who is doing what .. I have that issue occasionally with my cats.

I gave my iguana red cabbage- once!

Glad everyone seems to be doing well.

It can be tough with multiple animals - when Coda had her UTI - I thought our big dog ralphed water up on the couch and was mad at him all night for making my couch stink like his breath.

Turns out our other dog had jumped up and peed on it, I guess trying to show us something was wrong.

Our older guy sometimes urinates in the wrong places - and doesn't finish his food, or eat much for a day or two. I think they just don't have the bladder control they used to - and their teeth are bad so maybe it hurts to eat - our dog checked out just fine 2 weeks ago.

He ALWAYS pees on his beds or mat, when he has to go and someone isn't around to let him out.
