I think if you are afraid you might grow tired of it, then stick with a neutral color and one that is not too busy...same for BS....and you should be fine. Visit all the stone yards in your area and if you don't find one you fall in love with, then don't spend the big $ and go with laminate. You might also want to consider Caesarstone, Silestone, etc....they have patterns that run the gamut from very plain to stone look alikes.

Had we gone with one of our first choices (a really vibrant slab of Tropical Brown), I might have said that it was possible. Fortuitously, at a different stoneyard, we were shown the granite we ended up choosing--Labrador Golden Flake, a soft black with bronze and silver pearling (mica). It provided (and still provides) the look I had always admired in "inspiration" pics from way back (before having my own kitchen was even on my radar!).

I have seen so many gorgeous stones here on GW and IRL, some that make me drool (!), but even so, I am still so very happy with our choice. It looks perfect with our cabs, and is a beautiful backdrop to the plates and platters set upon it when serving meals, so I know we will continue to be happy with our choice long-term.

We did regret it both times. One was a black speckled variety (maybe black galaxy) and the other was Santa Cecilia. It drove DH and I nuts that we could not see dust or salt sprinkles.. DH never trusted that the counter was clean and would wipe down often and put his eyes at counter level to really "see". Over time, there were also small pits and nicks that were hard and the counter would feel gritty in some places. It just annoyed the heck out of us. So we are in the never again category.

We redid our kitchen 10 years ago and I still loved the Volga Blue granite we chose - it was black with blue mica chips. We unexpectedly moved 8 months ago and have to redo the new house's kitchen. I like granite with a ton of movement- I think that's what keeps me loving what I pick - there's always something new to look at.

I like my Giallo for exactly the same reason that lalitha did not like her ST Cecilia. I love how dirt and crumbs do not show and if I miss something, who cares? I do sometimes rub my hand over the counter.
If I had to do it over though, I would pick a different color granite. I was rushed by DH and the granite people. They assured me with "Everything goes with white!" (Meaning my white cabinets)
I finished my kitchen in 09 and I have to say that I am not tired of it. Although the counter has movement, the BS is very simple.
I think you have to know what kind of person YOU are. For me, if I really love something when I buy it, I will always love it. I can become accepting of things that were maybe a mistake, but I will never come to love them.
Ten years is when things can start to look dated. The interior design industry makes sure that there will always be that one new trend.
Look around your house. Have you always like bright and bold? Or do you like subdued? Do you constantly change your style. Go with a granite that matches your decorating style and you will not tire of it too quickly.

I had granite in my last kitchen for 8 years and loved it as much on the day I moved as the day I picked it out. It was not as wildly dramatic as some granites I'm seeing today, but had a lot of big swirly movement and a color I had always loved.

To me, the trick to still loving it is REALLY loving it in the first place, so I have a different view from Joaniepoanie. You can be happy long-term if yu pick a quieter, more neutral granite because that's the look you love and you are and have been consistently drawn to the look of that kind of kitchen...as cat-mom did. Or you can pick a a more dramatic granite that just fall in love with and still be in love with it 10 years later. But if you pick a granite which you like, which "works" for the kitchen as it is and makes it much nicer, but you don't love it, you're more likely to grow bored with it. JUmst MHO.

ours has been in for over 10 years and I still love it. It's Savannah Green, which is green, gray and black. I originally wanted soapstone, but when I went to the warehouse, I didn't see any slabs I liked very much. When I turned to leave, I saw the granite and knew I had to have it. I agree with the posters who say keep looking until you find something you love.

I just want to add that I once went to the home of a co-wkr to see his new granite installed on his old cabinets that were in good shape. It looked like "new granite on old cabinets". The granite costs way too much money to have the finish product look anything but new.

You asked your question in such a way/ same way that I've told many people who were debating the same thing. For the $ you put into granite, you won't want to change it when you're tired of it.
When I finally do MY kitchen it will get granite, and I'll be happy, but reading some of the posts, some people weren't meant to have stone counter tops.

Well, I DO think you can get tired of something, even if you love it today. We've all had the experience of falling in love with a fabric, chair, dress, hairstyle, wall color, etc....only to say down the road "what was I thinking?". Yes, I love my granite, cabinets, pulls today....will i still love them 2, 5, 10 years from now?.......impossible to say. We all sort of just take a leap of faith picking what appeals to us at the time. I do think there's less of a chance of hating something down the road if it is simple and neutral...maybe not exciting but less risky.
