electrical service upgrade question

We are finally doing a kitchen remodel. Currently I have 100 amp service. I will be adding CAC, a double wall oven and an induction cooktop (I currently have an electric range). Any advice as to how many amps I should have?

For a proper answer you need to state the number of amps of draw that these new appliances demand. Look at the labels on them for specifics about their current requirements. Anything other than that will just be an educated guess.

I am a complete novice at this, but here goes. I do not have these new appliances yet, but according to the website, the oven draws 7600W and the induction cooktop draws 7200W. No clue about CAC. I believe that my current range has a 30 amp line. Thanks!

OK, based on what you stated the oven needs a 40A circuit and the cooktop a 30A circuit. You can use the current range circuit for the new induction cooktop. The central air will likely need a 30A circuit. If you run all three appliances at the same time at maximum rating (unlikely), you will draw an additional 70A to what you are using now. However all additional circuits in your home must be considered and it wouldn't take much to push your demand over 100A I would recommend you put in a new service with 200A capacity. Be aware that this will cost at least several thousand dollars, maybe more. Get more than 1 quote and references unless you know your electrician already. Also, make sure everything is inspected and all permits are acquired.

Thank you so much bigbird! We were thinking 200A, but as long as we were doing it, wanted to make sure it was enough. Don't want to have to upgrade again in the future!

Is your AC going to be a normal AC unit or a heat pump? If HP and there are auxilliary electrical heating strips included, you'll definitely need that 200 amps, or maybe more.

We plan on a normal AC unit with a couple of zones. We are planning on keeping our oil furnace as is. (Hopefully it will last a few more years!)

    Hi,

We have A/C whole house and cooking is with a double oven. We have a twin 200 amp service, 400 amp total. I do not think that we ever use all of it, but the breaker panels are definately full. I think if you are putting in a new service, the incremental cost of going larger is not that great. Putting in too small, and then doing it again will be expensive.

    Best, Mike.

Wow, that's a lot of amps! :-) I agree with you though. I certainly do not want to have to add on later. I'll check with the electrician and see the differentials in price.

    Thanks, Mike

    Hey DaMom!

Congrats on getting your kitchen remodel project to finally happen! We are in a similar position ourselves. We currently have a 100 amp system because of the previous owners-builders used gas for everything, sigh! We are upgrading to a 200 amp service as well as having to have a trench dug because our main panel is on the back of our garage which is detached. I am looking forward to our induction cooktop after so many years of dealing with a gas range that well... ;)

Hey earth_pal...we have the opposite situation concerning the appliances. We have all electric appliances. (Hate the stove's cooktop!) So I was considering putting in gas. Thanks to this wonderful forum I discovered induction and I can't wait! Good luck on your kitchen remodel...don't you wish you could snap your fingers and it would all be done?
