electrical help needed please!

I've put in new light fixtures before, but got myself into a pickle over this one. I went to remove a flourescent box type fixture last night and made sure the wall switch was off and checked to see that the wires weren't hot. I took off all the wire nuts and pulled apart the thin white wires and the thin black wires. The last pair is thick white wires and when I pulled them apart with my wire stipper, they sparked and all the ceiling lights in that part of the house went out. The house is 100 years old. I didn't blow a fuse. Even though I put these last two wires back together and put on the wire nut, the other ceiling lights will not come back on. What did I do, and how do I fix it? I realize that I am in over my head so be gentle.

Thanks,

Diane
